Starting Jan. 1, 2015, it will be illegal to smoke on bar and restaurant patios, smoke on playgrounds and public sports fields, and sell tobacco on university and college campuses.

TORONTO Smokers will no longer be allowed to light up on bar or restaurant patios, playgrounds, and sports fields beginning next year.

The Ontario government says it ismaking changes to the Smoke-Free Ontario Actin order to protect children and youth from the harmful effects of smoking.

Starting Jan. 1, 2015, it will also be illegal to sell tobacco products on university and college campuses.

The Liberals also plan to reintroduce legislation that wouldextend a prohibition on sales of candy and fruit-flavoured tobaccoproducts to youth to a total sales ban.

Associate Health Minister Dipika Dameria said shes confident the new restrictions wont hurt businesses in Ontario.

When we first introduced a ban on smoking inside restaurants and bars, there was a lot of concern raised that it would throw restaurants and bars out of business, but the evidence shows that did not happen, said Dameria.

The Canadian Cancer Society applauded the move calling the courageous new tobacco control measures a way to further curb smoking behaviour among youth.

Creating smoke-free outdoor spaces and patios not only protects the public and workers from second-hand smoke but also reduces social exposure to smoking behaviour,saidCanadian Cancer Society Public Affairs Vice-President Rowena Pinto in a media release.

DENVER (CBS4) Denver police arrested 10 people accused of spray-painting graffiti on the Colorados state capitol building Wednesday night.

Crews started cleaning it up Thursday morning.

The suspects face charges of destruction of property, and one faces a charge of assaulting an officer. Police didnt saywhat led to that charge.

State Sen. Bill Cadman, a Republican from Colorado Springs, surveyed the damage Thursday evening.

This is especially disheartening when Iveworked here and when you know the history of this place and what it took to create this, he said.

Some of the graffiti includedprofane language and some appeared to be similar to the symbols used by the international hacktivist group Anonymous. The group has been staging protests around the world for several years on Nov. 5. On Wednesday the group staged protests in Philadelphia, Ferguson, Mo., and Brussels in Germany.

JUPITER, Fla. This is what you get when you hire Venus Williams as your interior decorator: an enthusiastic designer who has traveled the world, drawing inspiration from Moscow to Beijing, but has never quite had time to complete formal training; a team of professionals working with her; and a place on a client list that includes celebrities and professional athletes.

And, of course, you get Venus Williams.

Shes one of the greatest tennis players of all time: winner of seven Grand Slam singles titles and Olympic gold, a woman who changed the face of modern tennis. Her father gave her a racket when she was just 4 years old and told her she was going to become the best player in the world.

Most people decide what they want to do later in life, and some people know really early, she says. For me, what I was doing was already decided. Thankfully, I liked it. But that was her fathers dream, not hers. This was like when you get to make your own choice about what you love.

And Williams loves, loves, loves designing. She talks about space planning, construction, lighting and fabric swatches like nobodys business. In fact, it is a business: For more than a decade, she has quietly run an interior design firm in her adopted home of Florida, both capitalizing on and overcoming her famous name.

On Friday night, shell be in Washington for the unveiling of her latest work: the renovated Southeast Tennis and Learning Center, an after-school tennis, arts and academic program created for children in Ward 8. Other people at the gala will see her as the tennis legend; shes there as the person responsible for the look and feel of the space.

As a designer, you design and its beautiful and people feel great when they walk in but how have you changed the world? she asks. For us, this sort of project means so much to us because its going to impact so many lives.

An intense education

Williams had been playing tennis for 14 years and was two years away from her first Wimbledon and U.S. Open singles titles in 2000 when a letter arrived on her doorstep when she was 17 or 18. She cant remember if it was addressed to her or was a random solicitation, but it invited her to study art and design at a technical school in Tampa.

Oh, I want to go to design school! she remembers telling her mom. She loved being creative: She grew up sewing and still has the homemade skirts she made for her first professional tournament at age 14.

'Tory Burch In Color' is a personality-packed scrapbook of inspirations, interiors and travel photos, with a foreword by American Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. We've parsed the new book for takeaway tips

Tory Burch: self-made billionaire, stylist par excellence, charity fundraiser and mistress of no-make-up make-up - what's not to emulate?

It's not always easy emulating perfectly made-up, charitable, flawlessly-dressed billionaires, is it, though? Especially ones with immaculate homes. These are not fail-safe, havens of timid griege, by the way, but personality-packed cocoons of colour and pattern. So we were hoping that her new book, Tory Burch in Color (Abrams, 45) would be a step-by-step guide to Tory colourfulness. However, it's more of a scrapbook of what influences her, albeit one with a foreword by Anna Wintour.

Very sophisticated we're sure, and lovely to look at, certainly. But we want tips. To that end we've parsed the book for some. Here are the five most useful.

1. Pink doesn't have to be girly. Au contraire, Jeff Koons tells Burch in her book that he associates it with sexuality. Clearly it depends on the shade - but soft, dusty pinks can look strong contrasted with khaki, navy, grey, chocolate and even mustard. Burch's father, Buddy, always incorporated a dash of pink in his outfits.

2. When it comes to mixing colours and patterns, whether in the home or an outfit, you could do a lot worse than study the way great artists clash and layer. Matisse, by the looks of things, would have been a great interior decorator. Don't be afraid to throw things off a little with a dash of red or a splash of Burch's favourite orange. These colours really warm up both outfits and rooms.

Five tips from Tory Burch's new book

The demolition of historic homes in recent years have made headlines, with Four Winds, the Bermuda-style Maurice Fatio-designed home on Ocean Boulevard, and the Modern-style Alfred Browning Parker house on Wells Road among the structures that have been destroyed.

However, the towns preservation program has had far more successes than failures and is admired by preservationists throughout the state, Palm Beach architect Gene Pandula said Thursday.

Pandula, a former longtime chairman of the towns Landmarks Preservation Commission, spoke about the program during the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beachs ninth annual Historic Properties Workshop.

In 1977, while still in graduate school, Pandula became involved in Palm Beachs budding preservation movement.

A professor had referred him to the late Barbara Hoffstot, who crafted the towns landmarks preservation ordinance in 1978 and authored Landmark Architecture of Palm Beach. While some of the properties Hoffstot, Pandula and others wanted to save have been demolished, the landmarks program has protected 292 historic properties to date.

Today really should be a day of celebration, Pandula said. It is a highly, highly regarded program in the State of Florida. People with SHPO (the state historic preservation office) often look to us for all sorts of guidance. And what the town has been able to accomplish, for such a small community, is truly remarkable.

In the early 1980s, many structures worthy of landmark protection were in a state of disrepair, Pandula said. The preservation movement showed property owners the value of restoring those architectural gems, he said.

The renovation of The Palm Beach Biltmore condominium in the late 1970s and early 1980s, for example, was a catalyst for positive change in its neighborhood, Pandula said. (The building, at 150 Bradley Place, had opened in 1926 as the Alba Hotel.) Owners of other properties in the area soon redeveloped their parcels or restored architecture worthy of preservation, he said.

This was a hugely important project for the town given that it anchored the street. Somebody bit off a big amount of work in a time when people wanted to live in new buildings, Pandula said.
