EERE offers webinars to the public on a range of subjects, from adopting the latest energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, to training for the clean energy workforce. Webinars are free; however, advanced registration is typically required. You can also watch archived webinars and browse previously aired videos, slides, and transcripts.
Webinar Sponsors: EERE Tribal Energy Program, DOE Office of Indian Energy, Western Area Power Administration
The Energy Department's Office of Indian Energy, Tribal Energy Program, and Western Area Power Administration will present a live webinar titled "Successful Project Financing Mechanisms: ESPCs and UESCs" on Wednesday, September 24, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Attendees will learn about two popular mechanisms developed for federal agencies to finance renewable energy and energy efficiency projects: energy savings performance contracts (ESPCs) and utility energy service contracts (UESCs), and how these two methods allow tribes to develop the projects with limited to no up-front capital costs.
Register to attend the webinar.
Webinar Sponsors: Weatherization and Intergovernmental Programs Office
The Energy Department will present a live webinar titled "High Performance Outdoor Lighting Accelerator" on Thursday, October 2, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The Energy Department recently announced the expansion of the Better Buildings platform to include the newest initiative for the public sector, the High Performance Outdoor Lighting Accelerator (HPOLA), designed to accelerate the deployment of high performance street and outdoor lighting across at least 50% of a city's inventory over the next few years by demonstrating practical and effective best practices and improving system-wide replacement processes at the municipal level.
Crystal McDonald of Better Buildings will discuss how the HPOLA can support participating states, cities, and regional energy networks with access to credible information on potential energy and cost savings, procurement specifications to ensure high quality products, viable financing models, frameworks for addressing regulations, and policies limiting newer technologies.
Register to attend the webinar.
Webinar Sponsor: Better Buildings Challenge
The Energy Department will present a live webinar titled "PACE Financing for Energy Efficiency: Success Stories" on Tuesday, October 7, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The webinar will feature Better Buildings Challenge Partners, who will describe their successful experiences with property assessed clean energy (PACE) financing as program developers, city administrators, and property owners. PACE financing is a vehicle to pay for energy efficiency improvements or renewable energy installations on private property. Local or state governments and other organizations fund the upfront costs of the improvements, which are paid back over time through property assessments added to the owner's property tax bills. Speakers include: John Kinney, Clean Fund; Eric Shambarger, City of Milwaukee; and Steve Thompson, Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City.

Easy to grow, these sun loving, low maintenance, very pliable trees with willow-like, evergreen leaves are tolerant of neglect. Their growth rate depends partly on the care they receive. Ones that are watered during dry weather can reach 12 feet in height around four years of age.
As landscape trees, they reach their best growth in a deep rich soil. The plant is tolerant of alkaline pH and shallow soils. Neglected trees will grow rather slowly. There are probably well over 500 million olive trees worldwide.
Although the hardiness can vary slightly according to the variety, most mature olive trees are hardy to around 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Young trees sometimes suffer harm when temperatures fall to 24 degrees. Extremely cold temperatures can cause defoliation, but doesnt necessarily kill the tree although the plant is more likely to suffer disease problems than it normally would.
Where Grown Most of the olives produced worldwide are grown in the Mediterranean region. The trees are grown in various regions of the globe, such as South Africa, the northwestern Himalayans, China, Latin America, North America, the Middle East, and North Africa. Olives are an important crop in Australia and are often planted as windbreaks. They also thrive New Zealand.
In the U.S., olive trees are widely grown in California and southern Arizona. Theyre also cultivated in Hawaii, the Maritime Northwest, in the Southeast from North Carolina to Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oregon, and Texas.
Olive Trees for Landscape Use
If olives are being grown for their fruits, the best spot of all would be near the ocean for they are so much more productive (perhaps 20 times) than trees that are planted inland. Tough, extremely challenging conditions actually cause the trees to produce better quality olive oil.
Olive trees have ornamental value. Theyre sometimes used as specimen trees. Generally, it is best to avoid planting fruiting varieties close to walkways, driveways, patios, and other areas where people are likely to walk. The oily fruits can be very messy and create hazards underfoot.
For landscape purposes, the special non-fruiting varieties are very suitable for ornamental use, particularly for topiary and hedges. The non-fruiting types can sometimes bear a few olives if cross pollination is provided.
Be aware that some communities in the Southwest have banned pollen-bearing varieties. The trees are notorious for causing extreme allergies for some people. Varieties that are permitted in such areas include Bonita and Swan Hill.

Farmer charged with murder: Police arrive at the scene of the crime outside Moree. Photo: Mooree Champion
The 79-year-old farmer accused of murdering environmental compliance officer Glen Turner has been fined $140,000 for illegal land clearing, an offence his alleged victim had investigated.
Ian Robert Turnbull has been charged with murdering Mr Turner on the evening of July 29 by ambushing him on a country road and shooting him multiple times with a rifle.
He is also accused ofholding Robert Strange, Mr Turner's fellow compliance officer at the Office of Environment and Heritage, andtaking him with the intention of committing a serious indictable offence.

In the Land and Environment Court on Friday Mr Turnbull was fined $140,000 for bulldozing more than 3000 trees on properties owned by his son Grant and grandson Cory at Croppa Creek, near Moree, in northern NSW.

He was also ordered to pay the OEH's legal and investigation costs, estimated to be about $172,000.
The clearing took place between November 1, 2011, and January 18, 2012. While Mr Turnbull did not own the two properties, the judgment reveals he had a financial interest in his grandson's property as he mortgaged his own farm, Yambin, some 15 kilometres away, as security against Cory's bank loan. Further, some of the profits from cropping intended to take place on the farms could flow to him.
The judgment shows Mr Turner discovered the illegal land clearing on December 12, 2011. In January and February 2012 Mr Turner conducted inspections of the property, including aerial flyovers.

College Station residents might have seen Michael Stribling as a contestant on the TV show Design Star. Or they might remember him from several episodes of Little Couple as an interior designer.
Or they just might have seen him around town, particularly near 2501 Texas Ave., where he is opening the Christopher Michael Salon.
The salon, which formally opens at 5 p.m. Friday, was initially going to be a smaller salon in College Station. But through Striblings mentor, Jason Backe, LOreal partnered with Stribling, providing products and instructors to create what Stribling calls the areas first luxury salon.
Stribling, whose full name is Christopher Michael Stribling, made his reality-show career as an interior designer, but the stress of owning his own firm led him to seek a different profession. The revelation came to him during a Disney cruise with his family.
Whenever I was at my most stressed-out place in life, whenever I was over-worked and just burnt out, the place I found the most relaxation was at the salon, Stribling said. If I was able to do that for someone, if I can relax them, then my job is awesome.
Stribling was living in Houston, but decided to move home to College Station, where his parents, brother and sister-in-law live. Its also home to Striblings three nephews and niece.
My life is about those four kids, Stribling said. When Im not at work, Im with my nephews and niece.
Stribling pitches his salon as more than just a place to get a haircut. There are TVs on the ceiling above the sinks so clients can have a music video with their shampoo. Giant pictures of models cover several walls, and wine and chocolate are available.
I wanted it to feel like an art gallery, he said.
Backe, whose clientele includes Anne Hathaway and Angelina Jolie, said he has high hopes for Striblings salon.
