Red Cross encourages families to prepare for cold-weather disasters

    - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

in a fire, she now has a new home. American Red Cross volunteers wanted to help her, but instead, she's helping them. wdbj7 Mornin's Alison Parker is live at the Red Cross in downtown Roanoke with this woman's story. Angie Petty is lucky. She has a good job and homeowners insurance. That helped her rebuild her home. Petty's now giving back to the Red Cross -- a cause, that always needs help. Angie Petty was at the doctor. The kids, at school. Keaton the dog, caught in a house fire. sb 2 i had been working on remodeling the whole house over the course of 7 years, and a recess light caught on fire, caught the attic on fire, and pretty much destroyed the whole house. (9) In September last year, Salem fire crews saved the dog, but not much else. Old family portraits, treasured memories gone. sb 4 On the video tapes, i had some family members who had passed away, and that was the only place i had recordings of their voice, so that was hard to lose. (8) The Red Cross offered to help Petty get back on her feet. sb 3 It was really heart warming. i also had a huge outpouring from the community -- family, friends, neighbors, people i didn't even know. So it really touched my heart. (8) But instead, Petty recovered on her own. Now, she's the one paying it forward. sb 1 Angie Petty: Since then, I've been really in tune to other people in the area who have had house fires and really needed some help. (5) Next Saturday, Petty will hold an open house to raise money for the Red Cross. sb 5 They really help others that are in need, not only in fire situations but in floods, and other types of disasters. They're there, on call, ready to help, and i think that really makes a big difference in people's lives. (12) What she did learn from the Red Cross -- how to be prepared. sb 6 You never know when a disaster is going to strike. Whether it's a tornado, a hurricane a flood, a fire, you just don't know. So it's important to know who to call, and to have proper insurance, and have an escape route. All of those things are very important. (13) The open house is The open house is next Saturday -- the very important. (13) The open house is next Saturday -- the 27th -- from 1 to 5. Members of the Salem Fire Department and the Red Cross will be at Angie's home giving out fire safety and preparedness information. The kids can even explore a fire truck. All donations collected will directly support the Red Cross. This morning,

Take care of ducts now for greener, cheaper winter heat

    - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Provided by Networx.com

How can you prepare for a healthier, energy-efficient, and money-saving winter? Take care of your HVAC ductwork by cleaning, repairing, and insulating it as necessary. Proper attention to the air duct system is an easy, inexpensive step toward improved air quality and more efficient heating. Why not take care of this task now, before winter's cold sets in?

    Clean

Routine vacuuming or dusting of your HVAC registers is important, but cleaning further inside the ductwork is not necessary on a regular basis. However, there are certain circumstances that warrant cleaning the interior of your ducts ASAP -- for your health's sake. If you see mold growing inside your HVAC ducts, it is essential to clean the system to avoid allergies, asthma, and other breathing problems. Occasionally vermin or insects will make their home inside the ductwork; have the pests removed pronto and the ducts thoroughly cleaned. During home remodeling, the duct openings should be well covered. However, if any debris from lead paint or asbestos, or large amounts of dust, has entered the ducts, they must be cleaned urgently. Finally, if you find that unpleasant odors, animal hair, or other contaminants are coming into the ambient air via your ductwork or a household member is suffering from an unexplained respiratory illness, persistent headache, or rash, duct cleaning is strongly advised.

NOTE: Never use a steam cleaner on your ducts, as you do not want to introduce large amounts of moisture into the system. While you can clean the surface and ends of ducts yourself using a rag lightly dampened with bleach solution, you will not be able to reach as far as a trained serviceperson armed with a professional duct-cleaning machine.

    Repair Leaks

Your duct system can leak due to either holes in individual duct pipes or poor connections between pipes. These leaks may reduce the heating and cooling ability of your HVAC by up to 20 percent, while at the same time increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Even worse, they might backdraft life-threatening gases such carbon dioxide from your furnace or other appliances into your living space.

Leaks can be difficult to find since the ductwork runs through small hard-to-get-at areas such as crawl spaces. To try to track down sources of leakage, turn the HVAC thermostat to "on" instead of "automatic." This will allow you to feel for escaping hot air as well as visually inspecting the ducts.

Turn off the HVAC and apply mastic sealant, metal tape (NOT ordinary duct tape, which doesn't last long enough), or aerosol sealant to repair any leaks or faulty connections that you discover. Especially large gaps may need to be filled in with insulation before using the mastic.

    Insulate

Architects envision Washington DC's first elevated park

    - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Four competing teams of architects have unveiled their proposals for what will become the first elevated park in Washington, DC . Measuring roughly the same length as three American Football fields placed end-to-end, the 11th Street Bridge Park project will be built upon the foundations of a former freeway bridge that spans the Anacostia River and serve the communities which lie either side.

The 11th Street Bridge Park project was conceived by The Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC), and has received funding from the Washington, DC city council. At this stage, the proposals are still relatively lacking in specifics, though we can expect more details to be revealed once a winning proposal is chosen and work begins in earnest.

Balmori Associates and Cooper, Robertson & Partners' proposal strives for inclusivity and hopes to bring communities on both side of the river closer together. The park will connect a walkway from Martin Luther King Avenue in Anacostia with 8th Street on Capitol Hill.

The bridge-based park features basketball courts, a skate park, a water garden and a number of cafes. There's also a boardwalk, kayak launch, herb garden, and public art spaces.

OMA and OLIN's proposal is the most detailed of the four. It features two sloped pedestrian ramps which reach lookout points that boast a good view of nearby local landmarks. The park also offers access to the river to facilitate boating and related water-based activities, plus amenities such as restrooms, refreshments, and shelters.

Interestingly, OMA and OLIN's proposal also calls for a waterfall that's linked to a filtration system, which in turn cleans the water around the bridge though its not made clear just how this works.

Stoss Landscape Urbanism and Hweler + Yoon Architecture's proposal promises flexibility and, despite its climbing wall, fishing pier, floating gardens and several cafes, remains adaptable and expandable should requirements change as further planning commences. There's also an education center, amphitheater and multiple lawns and orchards.

Wallace Roberts & Todd and Next Architects' proposal promises a healthy focus on fun. The park is split into four distinct recreational zones and includes a dog park, herb wall, water garden, amphitheater, water taxi-stop, fishing pier, climbing nets, and even a trampoline park.

Members of the public are invited to offer their opinions of the proposals by filling out a survey (via the source link below), and the judges promise to take the comments into consideration while making their decision in mid-October. Construction should be completed by 2018 and is expected to cost approximately US$30 million.

Queensland architects want the Queensland Cultural Precinct at South Bankto be heritage-listed before the state government pushes ahead with plans to build two 30-storey towers on the landmark site.

The state government's draft master plan for the cultural precinct, which was released in May, includes plans for two 30-storey towers.

The plan proposes a five-star hotel be built over the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and a second tower near the Queensland Museum.

The Queensland arm of the Australian Institute of Architectshas voiced its frustration at the proposed changes, which it has said oppose the vision of architect Rob Gibson, who designed all the Queensland Cultural Centre buildings in the mid to late 1970s.

Mr Gibson's daughter Tina Gibson, herself an architect now working in Luxemborg, has also voiced her opposition to the high-rise plans and has started a Facebook page titled Queensland Cultural Centre Campaign protesting the state government's alterations to her father's designs.

"Essentially it is a myriad of inappropriate commercially driven alterations and additions that will inalterably affect both the interior and the exterior of the Complex," Ms Gibson told Fairfax Media.

"To make matters worse the funding for all these changes will come from selling off the airspace above and constructing a pair of 30-storey towers," she said.

"The scheme is a travesty and should be stopped."

Architects may not be the first group that people think of when it comes to solving the water problems but many Toledo area architects say they want to be included in what happens with the water because they are planners and have experience in making cities livable and successful.

Mayor D. Michael Collins was the main speaker Monday at the Toledo club for the annual legislative dinner of the American Institute of Architects where the main focus was on the water crisis that affected 500,000 water customers.

Many of the Architects at the meeting say safe and reliable water is vital to residents and businesses that want to set up shop in Toledo.

American Institute of Architects Kate MacPherson says Monday they called on local lawmakers to work with them on developing a master plan for water safety.

Troy would get $650,000 for former City Hall site

    - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TROY The city will receive $650,000 from a developer for the former City Hall site at 1 Monument Square, according to a draft agreement given the City Council.

The proposed contract between Kirchhoff Properties LLC and the city also outlines construction of an 85-space parking garage and 150,000 square feet of mixed-use commercial and retail space.

Kirchhoff Properties would buy 1.19 acres along the Hudson River, according to the proposed ordinance scheduled to be voted on at the council's Finance Committee meeting on Thursday.

The city also agrees to make "reasonable efforts" to provide $3,688,631 in state grants to assist in developing the project, according to the proposed contract.

Details of Kirchhoff's plans for the site will be unveiled to the council's Planning Committee at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The city had the option to forgo a payment for the site in return for development of a new City Hall at the location. Last week, Mayor Lou Rosamilia said the city would not exercise this choice and would remain in its current site at the Hedley Building, 433 River St.

Also set for a vote Thursday by the Finance Committee is a $60 monthly fee for parking in the new Front Street garage that would be built as part of the project.

Guardian Roof Systems a CertainTeed Certified and Credentialed Contractor

    - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (PRWEB) September 16, 2014

Comprising a team that has over two decades' worth of experience in the roofing industry, Guardian Roof Systems has always prided itself in going the extra mile to satisfy its customers. One of the ways in which the Pearland-based company strives to do so is through certification through CertainTeed. Today, Guardian Roof Systems has the CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster credential, making it a member of a very small, exclusive club. Fewer than five percent of companies in the United States have the aforementioned credential.

Founded in 1904, CertainTeed is headquartered in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of French multinational company Compagnie de Saint-Gobain SA. The company specializes in manufacturing building materials for residential and commercial construction projects. CertainTeed has made a commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly building materials by establishing a range of certification programs for construction categories or subsectors that include roofing, in addition to ceilings, vinyl siding, fences, decking, railing, and insulation.

SELECT ShingleMaster is one of the eight roofing credentials that CertainTeed offers. The program is designed for the very best professional roofing companies, and the credential gives the recipient a major selling advantage in the marketplace. Becoming a SELECT ShingleMaster requires that the company be in business for at least five years, hold the lower-tiered ShingleMaster credential for one year, and have at least one employee that is a Shingle Quality Specialist. Other requirements include passing the Business Fiscal Responsibility exam, having a shingle roof installation crew with at least half of its members being MSA-qualified, and holding current worker's compensation insurance and liability insurance covering roofing.

In addition to its unique CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster certification, Guardian Roof Systems provides roofs that can be Texas Windstorm certified, according to the standards of the Texas Department of Insurance and the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. This certification is essential in the Houston metro area in particular and Texas in general, as the state is prone to strong storms that can inflict damage upon roofing systems.

About Guardian Roof Systems: Guardian Roof Systems assists residential and commercial clients with roof repairs and replacements, as well as brand-new roof installation. In addition to its CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster credential, the company is a member of the Better Business Bureau, from which it has an A+ rating. Alexander vote set

In 2007, Alexander Public Schools K-12 enrollment was at 53 and falling.

After seven years of oil boom, enrollment has tripled to 185 and the community is considering doubling the size of its school.

We need more space because right now we are cramped, said Superintendent Leslie Bieber.

We need to be able to fit comfortably in our building in order to provide quality education.

Oct. 7, school district patrons will go to the polls to decide on a proposed $17.1 million bond issue to finance construction that would enlarge the school building and renovate some of the existing space.

If the bond issue is approved, Bieber said, construction will begin next spring on a 50,000-square-foot addition that would include 11 classrooms, and a new cafeteria and kitchen.

Also included in the project would be the addition of a second gym equipped with lockers and bathrooms, and 8,000 square feet of existing space would be renovated.
