Better Business Bureau issues 'Consumer Alert' after fielding complaints about Grand Rapids roofing contractor

    - September 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

GRAND RAPIDS, MI The Better Business Bureau of West Michigan has issued a Consumer Alert after receiving seven complaints about Ken Bird Roofing and Exteriors, a Grand Rapids roofing contractor.

Ken Bird Roofing and Exteriors in Grand Rapids recently told BBB that he has experienced personal, financial and business setbacks that have resulted in customers not getting their work done on time, according to a news release issued Monday, Sept. 15.

BBB urges Mr. Bird to resolve these issues, and to contact each of the customers to work out solutions, the consumer watchdog group said. Customers report in some cases that they still have not been contacted by Mr. Bird, while others now report some recent contact,

Messages left on the answering machine at Ken Bird Roofing, 1818 Chicago Drive SW, by The Grand Rapids Press and MLive were not returned on Monday, Sept. 15.

According to the BBB, several customers reported paying deposits to Bird without having any work performed afterward. Some of the complaints dated back to January 2014 and continued through the summer months.

Other customers complained the company failed to clean up after a roofing job or caused damage during the job, according to the BBB.

On the first day I came home to them replacing skylights that didn't need to be replaced in my bedroom and my bed was covered with old shingles and there was tool on my bedroom floor, one customer told the BBB investigators.

.Another customer told the BBB that bees began entering their home after a Ken Bird roofing job created new openings for the pests. The homeowners also reported a soggy ceiling after the roofing job was completed.

It is now three and a half months later. The job has been paid in full ($8,000) and he seems to feel no pressure to come and make things right, the customer told the BBB.

All of the complaints said Bird has failed to complete the work or make repairs after repeated assurances he would make good on his work.

Oklahoma City bombing memorial adds new exhibits

    - September 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A key piece of evidence, hundreds of oral testimonies and new artifacts were unveiled Monday at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum dedicated to the deadly 1995 bombing.

The additions are part of a nearly $8 million project that aims to attract a new generation of visitors to the structure, including those too young to remember the attack by Timothy McVeigh on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building that killed 168 people and injured hundreds more.

Detailed information about the investigation of the attack has been added to the museum for the first time. Among the evidence now on display is the 1977 Mercury Grand Marquis that McVeigh was driving when he was pulled over and arrested north of Oklahoma City the day of the bombing.

"People get to see from beginning to end what did happen here in Oklahoma City," said Susan Winchester, the chairwoman of the Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation, who lost her sister in the blast.

Winchester said victims' family members visited the museum on Sunday and were overwhelmed with the new artifacts and enhanced exhibits.

Patrick Gallagher of Gallagher and Associates, the company planning and implementing the improvements, echoed Winchester, saying the additions will help visitors see the story "come full circle to a justice-served perspective."

On April 19, 1995, McVeigh drove a truck filled with fertilizer and fuel oil to the front of the federal building and detonated the makeshift bomb. He was executed for the crime, while co-conspirator Terry Nichols is serving life in prison.

The enhancements include more than 1,100 new pieces of exhibits, new interactive stations, and video and newspaper coverage.

In one installation, a large map of the United States shows how the bombing reached beyond state lines. One example shows how, before the attack, McVeigh was attending a gun show in Akron, Ohio, while Nichols was committing a robbery in Arkansas.

In another room plays a recording of a water resource board meeting that was taking place the morning of the bombing. The meeting was moving along normally until 9:02 a.m., when an explosion is heard and chaos ensues. A panel then lights up and shows photos of each of the victims killed in the blast.

    Journal Center office gambit

    - September 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    ........................................................................................................................................................................................

Architect, builder and developer Knight Seavey is pulling a bold move in one of the softest office markets in Albuquerque metro area history by constructing an office building thats only about half pre-leased.

The 8,780-square-foot building under construction at 5110 Masthead NE in the Journal Center area has one tenant lined up, physician Robert Cutchens Albuquerque Vein & Laser Institute currently located a few blocks away.

The 4,404 square feet of vacant space in the building is marketed for lease by Martha Carpenter of Colliers International, a commercial real estate services firm.

Close to a quarter of the metros office market either was vacant or available as of the second quarter, according to Colliers. There hasnt been a new office building with spec space, or space that wasnt pre-leased, open in the metro since the first quarter of 2009, Colliers Ken Schaefer reported.

The two buildings that opened then Aperture Center at Mesa del Sol and the Fountain Hills Professional Office Buildings on the West Side have remained largely empty since hitting the market in early 2009 and are now both for sale, he said.

Seavey is optimistic about the potential lease-up of his new building, called Conejos Common, for two reasons. First is the location between Jefferson and the Interstate 25 frontage road, which he says provides excellent access. The second is its office product type.

Its going to be a more boutique project with high-quality space, he said. Were trying to deploy a new concept for office space. We can react to smaller tenants. Its a finer, more focused view. We think theres a place in the market for that.

From the outside, the buildings centerpiece is a courtyard entrance with a fountain that Seavey described as a gracious entry to get you off the parking lot and into a more protected area.

An application has been made for platinum certification through the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. The green elements include high-performance wall and roof systems, triple-paned windows that tilt and turn, and a 25-kilowatt solar array that doubles as covered parking.

All the comforts of home: Parade builders offer inspiration, ideas

    - September 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

There are more amenities than ever in todays newly built or remodeled homes.

Like many Americans, eastern Iowans are centering their lives around their homes as a place of refuge from the daily grind and a place to raise children or retire, as well as entertain family and friends. The focus is on beautiful, practical spaces that are functional and efficient.

Consumers also are better informed, says Randy Pearson of Pearson Construction, about the latest trends, materials and products, thanks to shelter magazines, cable television and the Internet with websites like Houzz and Pinterest. Media has changed considerably peoples knowledge of what options are available, he points out.

More inspiration can be found in walk-throughs of new and remodeled homes featured in one of the areas largest real estate events, the 12th annual Cedar Valley Parade of Homes, beginning Thursday and continuing through next Sunday.

Sponsors are the Home Builders Association of Northeast Iowa, Veridian and Courier Communications.

Potential home buyers, people interested in building their own home or remodeling an existing home can see whats available in the market and the range of contractors in the area.

Cedar Valley builders point to hardwood floors, large tiled shows with frameless glass doors and multiple shower heads, first-floor laundry rooms, kitchen islands with furniture-like details and finishes that contrast other cabinetry, and maple, cherry and alder wood cabinets stained from light to dark or painted.

Although not new, the open-concept floor plan tops many wish lists, says Kyle Larson of LGC Homes. If you can possibly make an open-concept home even more open, thats what people want. And so many things that used to be 'bells and whistles' are more commonplace. Not long ago, hardwood floors and granite counter tops were considered luxuries. Now theyre almost standard, he explains.

Reed Hunemuller of Harting-Hunemuller says kitchens are the first spaces homeowners seek to open up in a remodeling project. They want the kitchen to be open to the living space. Weve also been doing a lot of whole-house remodels, either because someone buys a house and wants to redo it from top to bottom, or they like the neighborhood theyre in, or the home has some deep meaning to them, and theyre willing to stay and put as much money into the home as they would a new house."

Within those open spaces, more homeowners are seeking simple lines and less clutter. Theyre mixing traditional with the more contemporary look of clean lines in cabinetry and trim, notes Jennie Plummer, Cedar Falls sales director for Skogman Homes.
