As the evenings start to turn darker the chances of getting burgled begin to climb unless you crack down on criminals now with home security measures.

Household thefts rise by 5 per cent in the week after the clocks go back in October, while November is the worst month of the year for break-ins up 20 per cent, according to the latest home insurance claims data from insurer Aviva.

Fortunately, the odds of getting burgled are still slim, with less than two per cent of the 25million homes in Britain suffering a break-in each year. By taking extra precautions you can reduce the chance of becoming a victim as well as save some money on your home insurance premiums.

Take precautions: Household thefts increase by 5 per cent in the week after the clocks go back next month

Zambia: 'Involve Us in Screening of Security Guards'

    - September 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

THE Ministry of Home Affairs has advised security firms to engage it in the screening of security guards during recruitment exercises to prevent high crime rate involving security guards.

This follows the arrest of a 24-year-old guard from Group 4 Security firm in Lusaka arrested last month in connection with theft of more than K120, 000 and US $200 at the Road Development Agency (RDA) offices.

Earlier this year, three security guards of Group 4 Security were arrested in connection with the theft of an undisclosed amount of money.

Home Affairs spokesperson Moses Siwali said involving the Ministry of Home Affairs in the screening process during recruitment would help detect criminals before they are employed.

Mr Siwali explained that the situation where some security firms where employing people without prior knowledge of their history was dangerous, more so in security firms.

The G4 security guard who was arrested in connection with the RDA theft had gone into hiding and was only arrested in Western Province.

A total of K7,000 had been recovered from the security Guard at the time of the arrested.

Mr Siwali further explained that the Ministry of Home Affairs if engaged could also help security firms in training their security guards.

"Our mandate is to maintain law and order in the country and so if they need to engage us in their recruitment exercise we shall provide the services," he said.

He stated that engaging the Ministry of Home Affairs in the recruitment exercise would also help instill confidence in security firms.

Tips to more effectively secure your home

    - September 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Wow folks, thanks for your overwhelming response to Contractors Corner; we still have readers in our society and that is great. It was on one of visits to a client when the topic of home security came up; she asked home can we make our homes more safe, and the discussion went on and on.

I eventually recognised that there was so much we could do to make our homes and families a bit safer, and it did not require forking out a million dollars. I however, do recommend some anti-theft device, but I think the following ideas would help make any security system even more effective. After all you spent so much building it, the least you could do is protect it!!

So some of the ideas were as follows:

There are several security companies on the island; consider having a discussion with a security professional to see how your own space could be just a little safer. Thanks again for touching by contractors corner.

Broncos' turf at Sports Authority Field playing better than it looks

    - September 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bradley Roby (29) of the Denver Broncos breaks up a pass intended for Reggie Wayne (87) of the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth quarter. A striking visual confronted a national TV audience last Sunday night. The Broncos began their season playing on haggard-looking turf at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

The field played well, with minimal slippage, but it didn't look well.

"We have always placed a lot of pride in the 'playability' of our turf. The safety of players is our first priority. This was a cosmetic issue, but it doesn't meet our standards," said Andy Gorchov, general manager of Stadium Management.

A confluence of factors contributed to the field's less than forest green appearance: a heavy traffic event schedule leading up to the Broncos' opener, soggy weather and the seeding process used to replenish the turf.

Before the Colts game, the stadium hosted a Manchester United-AS Roma soccer match, which required the grass to be cut at a shorter length. Also played on the field: lacrosse games and the Rocky Mountain Showdown, matching the CU and CSU football teams. Combine that with two Broncos practices, one conducted in torrential rain, a scrimmage and a pair of preseason games, and the turf took a beating.

"It was a perfect storm. The (Desso) Grassmaster (blend) needs a window of time to reseed. And we haven't had that two-week window," Gorchov said. "In reality, this is one of those years where we expect the field to look better later in the season."

Why not resod the field's problem areas?

The Broncos use a seeding process that allows the turf to strengthen. Resodding, as seen in the 49ers' and Texans' fields recently, can create footing issues because of loose sod. Several Broncos said Mile High's turf had no issues. No consideration was given to painting the brown spots for appearance sake, since doing so can create long-term damage.

The Sports Turf Managers Association has voted the Broncos' field tops in the industry in the past.
