The reasons that have made the municipality contemplate stopping home services include inculcating in people the habit of maintaining cleanliness in their homes. Also municipal teams are sometimes given a tough time by home owners who despite requesting the service have doubts over health risks from the pesticides used officials say.
Rashid al Hinai deputy director of health affairs for the municipality's Seeb directorate said 'Muscat Municipality is planning to stop pest control services for homes provided on request. Those wanting the service can contact private companies; we can suggest them which firms to approach.'
While the free home services to battle cockroaches rodents and sometime bed bugs are given on call the municipality is regular with its monthly outdoor pest control drives said Mufeed Abdullah Saif Alkalbani pest control specialist in the municipality's directorate of health.
Hinai said 'Indoor pests are a result of unhealthy practices. If people maintain cleanliness they won't have to knock on the municipality's doors. We will continue outdoor pest control. Mosquitoes and flies increase depending on the season and if we control the source of these pests outdoors they are automatically controlled indoors. If we stop people will get into the habit of keeping their homes clean.'
Carrying out pest control in homes is an expensive affair he said. 'We invest money manpower and time. People register complaints but when our teams reach their homes they are reluctant to open the doors. Teams have been made to wait out for 20 to 30 minutes before being let in.'
Another issue is people's doubts Hinai said. 'They want to know if it's safe. They fear the pesticides may stain their walls. This despite the fact that we use the best quality.'
The municipality says it uses approved methods to control pests like mosquitoes houseflies cockroaches and rodents - all harmful to public health.
The municipality's Directorate of Health Affairs has taken to Twitter to keep its more than 20000 followers informed about ways to control pest infestation at home.<

DALLAS Maintenance professionals gearing up for the start of school now have a new tool to help defend students from the inevitable summer influx of undesirables roaming the halls.
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Services new integrated pest management website, http://ipmcalculator.com, offers school staff members in charge of pest control a wealth of practical information on managing rodents, birds, cockroaches, ants and a plethora of other unwelcome denizens, said Janet Hurley, AgriLife Extension integrated pest management program specialist at Dallas.
The cost calculator, available free on the website, allows the user to assess various pest risks on their school and district levels, Hurley said. The resulting information will be a big help for those responsible for developing a budget for a school integrated pest management program.
Hurley said using the calculator is as simple as entering the schools location, presence of pests and the facilitys condition. The calculator then gives an overall pest risk estimate for the school.
The calculator also has features that allow you to create your own budget to see how improving certain features will affect the overall pest risk, she said.
The cost calculator doubles as an excellent teaching tool because many aspects of general building maintenance also relate to pest issues, Hurley said.
The bottom line with this calculator is that it allows the user to see the impact different building budgeting plans, past, present or future, have had or will have on the facilitys pest risk profile, she said. Just as investors use spreadsheets to study the impact of various investment strategies, the pest calculator helps pest management coordinators maximize the most bang for their buck of currently budgeted dollars, or in some cases, helps them to justify requests for adding to those budgets.

Herdwick fell gather proves a hit with visitors

THE Lake Districts first open Fell Gather has been hailed a great success after it attracted hundreds of locals and tourists to see how a traditional Herdwick farm works.
The event, held at Knott Houses Farm, Grasmere, showcased the vital work of hill farmers and how they help to shape and preserve the landscape of the Cumbrian uplands.
Organised by the Herdwick Sheep Breeders Association (HSBA) and backed by Taste Cumbria, the Fell Gather featured shepherds working with livestock in the farming environment, close to the fells where the sheep graze.

Mary Houston, from Taste Cumbria, said: Herdwick breeders were delighted with the day; it gave them the opportunity to meet and educate more than 300 residents and tourists about the vital work of hill farming in Cumbria.
It was a rare opportunity for the Herdwick community to meet and celebrate the success of their work alongside the Princes Countryside Fund, as well as influence key decision makers about the future of the work of the breeders association.
Flanked by a suite of high quality Herdwick products, from carpets to hot hogget roles, the day represented the Cumbrian cultural landscape as significant, iconic, high quality and progressive offering, to tourists and residents, and the wider agricultural community alike.
HSBA chairman Will Rawling said: Its vitally important to educate the public about the role hill farmers play not just in producing food, but managing the landscapes we all love in the lakes.

Herdwick fell gather proves a hit with visitors
Interior designer and television personality Faye Resnick has sold her glamorously decorated Hollywood Hills home for $2.29 million.

Faye Resnick's home, which she just sold, has a Federalist/New Orleans style.
The two-story residence, off the Sunset Strip at7424 Woodrow Wilson Drive in Los Angeles, has a long upstairs balcony overlooking the pool and mostly white furniture that gives it a chic, designer-done look. Thelisting, held by The Agencys Mauricio Umansky and his step-daughter, Farrah Aldjufrie, says the exterior has a Federalist/New Orleans style, while the interior is French/traditional.
Anyone who tunes in to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills knows that Umanskys wife, Kyle Richards, is friends with Resnick and the reason for her appearances on the series. Before reality TV stardom, Resnick was known for her role in the O.J. Simpson trial and later tell-all bestsellers.
The home she recently sold sits on a private double-lot and spans 2,567 square feet with three bedrooms, four bathrooms and no shortage of chandeliers. The listing photos of the closet show off a very impressive collection of shoes and handbags.

The home features hardwood floors and an open floor plan.
Resnick bought the home in 2012 for $1.605 million and redecorated it, replacing old-fashioned wooden cabinets and La-Z-Boy-style furniture with Carrera marble and formal furniture in white and gold.
The buyer is not named in property records, but The Real Estalker at Variety, whofirst reported the sale, says it is actor Jack Huston.

Sold: Faye Resnicks dramatically decorated home in Hollywood Hills
TORONTO - Target Canada is poised to embark on yet another design collaboration with homegrown talent.
The retailer has announced a long-term partnership with Sarah Richardson slated to launch next year.
The interior designer and HGTV personality will be teaming with Target Canada on a line of home decor set to arrive in stores beginning in the fall of 2015.
Target Canada is set to expand its Beaver Canoe home decor offerings and add sleepwear and slippers. The Beaver Canoe brand is a part of Roots Canada.
Target Canada also plans to boost its maternity apparel offerings with the addition of U.S. women's fashion line Nick & Nora in 2015. A plus-size line will also be introduced early next year.
The moves are among several initiatives the company has announced in an effort to bolster its business performance north of the border. Since its March 2013 launch, the discount retailer's first foray outside of the U.S. has experienced its share of rough patches. The retailer was initially faced with high expansion costs and disappointing sales as Canadian shoppers complained about near-empty shelves and notably higher prices than at U.S. Target stores.
On Aug. 21 at 9 p.m. ET, the retailer will also be staging a fashion show open free to the public as part of the Montreal Fashion and Design Festival. In addition to highlighting key trends for fall, the showcase will also include pieces from Altuzarra for Target, the retailer's designer collaboration with the luxury women's ready-to-wear brand. The collection is slated to launch on Sept. 14.
The Minneapolis-based retailer has 130 stores in Canada.

CLEVELAND COUNTY, Okla. Its a story weve been following for weeks. A mobile home has been blocking a portion of a Cleveland County road. It was a headache for residents, even causing one womans home health care to stop service.
The mobile home was abandoned on their road. It was falling apart.
The neighbors tried for months to get help, eventually calling KFOR.
Weve been working with Cleveland County officials for weeks now regarding the issue. The sheriffs office repeatedly told us there was nothing they could do, but then the county commissioner for that district and a company out of Enid stepped in to help residents take their road back.
The company which stepped up to help is ECO Alliance, out of Enid.
Charles Dague, one of the residents, watched as the mobile home was demolished.
He said, He had it smashed down in not very long, down to the ground.
Dorian Williams heard the sounds of the crews at work.
She said, Its gone. I went down there. Its fantastic.
For Dorian, who is battling cancer in her liver, her lungs and her intestines, this means her home health care can now reach her.
