AMSTERDAM Defensive handyman Geoff Cameron has received widespread transfer interest this summer, but his agent informed MLSsoccer.com that Stoke City have no interest in parting with the US international.

As reported by the Stoke Sentinelon Friday, the 29-year-old has drawn quite a crowd of admirers in recent months. Fresh off working at three different positions in his first World Cup, Cameron currently has several Premier League suitors and Bundesliga side Hamburg pondering bids for his services. In addition, the likes of Anderlecht, Eintracht Frankfurt, PSV Eindhoven and Schalke made introductory calls about Cameron earlier in the summer.

"There have been numerous options, especially EPL, but I met with Stoke yesterday and they won't sell," Cameron's rep, Gary Mellor, told MLSsoccer.com by e-mail on Friday night.

Since arriving from the Houston Dynamo two summers ago, Cameron has started 74 of 79 matches across all competitions for Stoke. Having just returned to the club after a post-World Cup vacation, he is now preparing to see his first action of the preseason when the Potters visit Blackburn on Sunday.

Stoke will open the new Premier League season at home to Brad Guzan and Aston Villa on August 16.

Why do the plants we don't want appear to grow better than the plants we do want? Is it just nature's way of rebelling against our desire for orderliness? Are our gardens being overtaken by anarchists?

Realize we are outnumbered. Just one lambsquarter plant can produce 72,450 seeds in one growing season. If we all devoured lambsquarter or were awestruck at its beauty, this information would be good news. Perhaps we should be shifting our culinary cravings and aesthetic preferences.

But for most of us, weeds compete with our garden plants for light, nutrients and water.

Familiar weeds possess a few common attributes. They go through their life cycle rapidly, flower quickly, produce vast quantities of seeds and have some seed adaptation for travel by wind, water or animals. By midsummer, weeds can produce a waist-high fortress and you're ready to surrender.

As garden author Roger Swain says, "there are no pacifist gardeners." Once you decide to grow anything, whether it's for food or beauty, you will at one time or another find yourself in literal hand-to-hand combat with weeds.

The battleground is bare soil. Bare spots in the lawn next to the driveway. A new tilled garden bed is prime area for weeds to grow. Weed seeds that were dormant for years now have open territory to conquer.

Once you have decided a plant is a weed, your first task is to identify the plant. Knowledge of a plant's life cycle is the key to control. Annuals such as crabgrass, foxtail, lambsquarter and buttonweed live one growing season and must come back each year from seed. Biennials such as burdock and poison hemlock live two years producing the seed in the second year.

With perennials such as dandelions, creeping Charlie and quackgrass, the same plant comes back each year and they also produce seed. Key deer are about the size of a large dog.

Of the National Key Deer Refuge's 84,351 acres in the Lower Keys, by far the most dangerous place for its namesake species to be is on or near U.S. 1.

The docile, endangered Key deer has become almost domesticated over the years due to some residents and tourists -- against state and federal law --- hand-feeding the deer. It leads to them approaching cars on the highway and many times being struck and killed.

It was alarming, then, for refuge staff to learn this week that Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority "silt fences" related to Monroe County's ongoing Big Pine Key sewer construction were unintentionally steering deer out to the highway from Long Beach Road.

Silt fences are made from black, usually woven, synthetic material meant to keep sediment out of the areas the Aqueduct Authority is digging up to install the Cudjoe Regional wastewater system in the Lower Keys. The fence stands roughly 2 feet tall.

"The deer got a little spooked by it and they get into the middle of the road and couldnt figure out how to get out. They were funneling out and cars were coming down the road," refuge Manager Nancy Finley said.

"Deer were in the road and animals were at risk of being hit. There was a report of one being hit. There was a blood trail on the road, but we did not find the animal," she said.

Finley said she met immediately with Aqueduct Authority staff and came to a compromise to have 50-foot openings for every 100 feet of silt fencing. The openings would be covered with a "waddle," which stands just a few inches high.

"They're like a sock filled with absorbent material, almost like a boom from an oil spill. Most animals can either crawl or walk over it; it's only four inches high," Finley said.
