The Castle Motel may go down in the history as the derelict building that refuses to be demolished, but what remains of the abandoned and burned-out hulk likely will be flattened on Monday.
Work was supposed to begin Thursday, but the city of Beaumont discovered that it had no source of water, which was necessary for the demolition contractor to spray on the site to keep debris from blowing in the breeze.
On Friday, a crew from the city's Water Utilities Department bored a new hole under 11th Street to thread in a new 2-inch plastic pipe and finished the job late in the afternoon.
From the viewpoint of the northbound side of 11th and looking across the street at the Castle, 1125 N. 11th St., a large track hoe with a steel-toothed bucket attached is ready to chew into what remains. It sits behind a padlocked chain-link fence.
To the left of the Castle, or its south side, is A-1 Cleaners.
To the right of the Castle is the former Chula Vista Restaurant, which closed suddenly in late January 2013 after more than 30 years in business.
Earlier this year Claybar Funeral Properties Inc., which owns the properties at 1145 and 1155 N. 11th St., acquired the former Chula Vista property.
A telephone message for Warren Claybar could not be delivered late Friday afternoon.
Looking at nearby properties, like Calder Baptist Church and Claybar, suggests possible redevelopment.
"My first choice would be medical offices," said The Rev. James Fuller, Calder Baptist's pastor. "Eleventh Street is where there is a concentration of them. They're wonderful neighbors for us."

As the owner of a blighted East Side motel was being taken from a Franklin County courtroom in handcuffs yesterday morning, Doni Schoedinger was thinking about the party that she and her neighbors are planning for the buildings demolition.
Were going to have a cookout across the street when they bring in the bulldozers, she said after a judge found Fu Ih Chu in contempt of court and ordered him to jail until the building is torn down.
Im dumbfounded, Environmental Judge Dan Hawkins said after hearing testimony that Chu hadnt obtained a demolition permit for the former Motel One by Thursdays court-ordered deadline.
The deteriorating, crime-ridden motel at 3190 E. Main St. was shut down in April 2012 by Hawkins predecessor, Harland Hale, after city prosecutors presented evidence that it was a magnet for drug deals and prostitution. One year later, Hale declared the property a public nuisance and ordered it demolished or sold within 180 days.
Chu and his daughter Helen Steed appealed the court order, but the county Court of Appeals sent the case back to Environmental Court after the city and the owner filed a joint motion asking that they be allowed to resolve the case.
In May, Hawkins signed an order giving Chu until July 31 to demolish the building and transfer the property to a real-estate agent interested in redeveloping the site.
Chu, 67, testified yesterday that the demolition was delayed because the agent, Steve Master, has been unable to finalize deals with tenants for the proposed development.
Hawkins said the suggestion that Master is the one to blame for the demolition delay is infuriating.
Schoedinger said the property, about 400 feet from her house, has been such a nightmare for the neighborhood that it prompted her to join pickets outside, testify at a 2012 hearing and become active in her block-watch program.

BANGKOK: The composition of the newly-appointed National Legislative Assembly (NLA) speaks volumes about the National Council for Peace and Order's (NCPO) plan to make sure that nothing will go wrong with its road map for the country.
Of the 200 members, more than 100 are active or retired military and police officers who are poised to back the military regime. Several of the remaining members are former senators, university rectors and businessmen and they are also believed to be willing to support the NCPO.
The NLA list was announced late on Thursday after being endorsed by His Majesty the King. With almost half of the lawmakers comprising military officers, it seems extremely likely that NCPO chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha will be nominated as the prime minister since the NLA is tasked with nominating the prime minister under the interim charter.
Meanwhile, Visanu Krue-ngam, a legal adviser to the regime, said the NLA aims to push for the passage of key draft laws that stalled under the previous government. However, he said not all of the draft laws pending the NLA's consideration will be passed.
Mr Visanu also said he would not accept any position in the National Reform Committee or the constitution drafting committee due to health problems. But he said he would still help out.
A source said the appointments of the active and retired military officers also shows the strong bond between Gen Prayuth and two former army chiefs, Anupong Paojinda and Prawit Wongsuwan. The trio are members of the influential military group called Burapha Payak (Tigers of the East).
Of the military officers appointed as NLA members, most were former classmates at the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School or close associates of the three men.
The officers who have close ties to Gen Prawit include Gen Noppadon Inthapanya, Gen Boonsang Niampradit, Gen Jirapong Wannarat, Gen Lertrit Wechasawan and Gen Sopon Silapipat.
Other NLA members close to Gen Anupong include Gen Thirawat Boonyapradap, Gen Trairat Rangkharattana, Gen Songkitti Chakabatra, and Adm Kamthon Phumhira.
Gen Prayuth's classmates include Gen Thawatchai Samutsakhon, Gen Yodyuth Boonyathikarn and Gen Wilat Arunsri.
