North Shore Towers Partners with GI Energy to Install Turnkey Natural Gas-Fired Combined Heat and Power Plant

    - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 31, 2014

North Shore Towers, a luxury co-op community based just east of New York City, partnered with GI Energy, one of the nations leading combined heating and power (CHP) systems providers, to complete a $13 million upgrade of its 43-year-old CHP system. The original CHP system had been maintained since installation in 1971 and in an effort to extend the life of the plant, GI Energy was contracted to replace three of six generators and associated electrical and heat recovery equipment, while maintaining continuous operation of the entire complex.

The complex relies fully on the existing CHP system to provide all of the heating, cooling, and electricity with no backup from the utility, making a seamless transfer essential for uninterrupted operation of the facility. Continuous operation was particularly important to General Manager Glen Kotowski whose primary goal was to ensure the safety of residents, with minimal inconvenience.

GI Energy was selected for the project because it offered a comprehensive construction plan and turnkey solution, according to Sal Castro, Chief Engineer at North Shore Towers. Amir Yanni, Senior Vice President of Construction and Project Management at GI Energy, provided an all-inclusive plan including connected on-site back-up generators throughout the duration of the project, explained Castro. This proved to be invaluable. Other bidders concentrated exclusively on their design/build contract, leaving the day-to-day operation of the facility and generator rentals to us. While these construction details were very important; the continued, uninterrupted operation of our buildings, simultaneously, was even more important to us.

GI Energy teamed with Caterpillar distributor, H.O. Penn Machinery, to install three natural-gas fired reciprocating engines totaling 4.8 megawatts. Additionally, the team replaced the cooling tower and installed a new gas compressor and heat exchangers. These upgrades increase overall efficiency, conserve fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions, while extending the life of the plant by an estimated 30 years.

The communitymade up of three 33-story buildings, with on-site amenities like golf, tennis, pool, shopping, restaurants and morewill benefit from reduced running costs and a smaller carbon footprint with new equipment running solely on natural gas at higher efficiencies.

By switching the system at North Shore Towers to natural gas we can increase the resilience of the heat and power supply, while cutting running costs and emissions, stated Amir Yanni, of GI Energy.

The new system is fully operational as of July 23, 2014. The cost of maintaining the system will by cut by almost 40%, equal to about several hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for North Shore Towers. Castro emphasized that, The project was a success largely due to the diligence of GI Energy, and the new equipment should serve North Shore Towers well for years to come.

GI Energy, which has offices in Chicago, New York, Benicia, CA, and Anaheim, CA, has nearly a decade of experience with CHP systems through its acquisition of Chicago-based Endurant Energy LLC in 2011. Endurant Energy had previously been involved in developing and building the largest grid-connected CHP system in a commercial office building on the east coast, a 6.2 MW installation at One Penn Plaza in Manhattan.

Australian Institute of Architects recognizes architectural innovation around the globe

    - July 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Australian Institute of Architects has revealed the five winners of its 2014 International Awards, which highlight projects tackled by Australian architects outside their home country. A luxury condominium in Bangkok, a Malaysian rainforest retreat, and the innovative Stonehenge Visitor's Center were among the projects recognized.

Taken from a total of 24 entries in all, the projects are separated into categories for the first time this year: Public Architecture, Interior Architecture, Commercial Architecture, Residential Architecture, and Small Project Architecture.

England's Stonehenge Visitor's Center, by Denton Corker Marshall, has been awarded the Public Architecture award. Probably the most high-profile building to be recognized by the judges this year, the 27 million (US$44 million) project involved re-routing a major road, and placing the visitor's center 0.9 miles (1.5 km) away from Stonehenge's famous stones.

Commendations: Binus Kindergarten and Primary School, by Denton Corker and Phoenix Valley Youth Palace and Grand Theatre, by studio505.

BVN Donovan Hill and Jasmax dominate the Interior Architecture category with first and second-place honors. First place went to New Zealand's ASB North Wharf: a colorful three-story office that features a novel cross ventilation system. It comprises a central atrium that draws in fresh air from open windows, which is then directed around the building with the help of a specially designed funnel.

Commendation: Regional Terminal at Christchurch Airport, also by BVN Donovan Hill in association with Jasmax.

Looking like the sort of ambitious project that typically remains on the drawing board, Singapore's striking Park Royal Hotel, by WOHA, has been given the nod in the Commercial Architecture category. The building certainly achieves the "hotel-as-garden" design that WOHA aimed for, and its green-covered facade and roof is a striking addition to Singapore's skyline.

Commendation: Asia Square, in Singapore, by Public Architecture winners Denton Corker Marshall.

Kerry Hill Architects fared well in the Residential Architecture category, winning first place and also receiving the judge's second-place commendation. The winner, Sukhothai Residences, is a luxury condominium in Bangkok, Thailand, that comprises 41 stories and 196 homes, and rises 166 m (544ft) into the sky.

Commendation: Urban Suites, by Kerry Hill Architects.

    Architects reward firefighters

    - July 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SCOTLAND'S top architectural body has made a donation to firefighters' charities as a gesture of thanks for their efforts at the Glasgow Art School fire.

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) donated 1500, split between two charities linked to fire personnel.

The charities were the Fire Fighters Charity and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Family Support Trust.

Assistant Chief Officer Dave Boyle said: "The fire at the Mackintosh touched a great many people and it has brought together communities like architects, artists, Historic Scotland and the fire and rescue service.

"We appreciate the recognition that has been given for the work of the firefighters - the first responding crews and officers in particular did an absolutely magnificent job - and there is certainly a greater understanding of the vital role they play."

RIAS president Ian Connelly said: "To people around the world the Mackintosh is an iconic building and the architects of Scotland are hugely grateful for the work the fire and rescue service did.

"The building and its artefacts could have been completely destroyed had it not been for the firefighters.

"Their efforts went way beyond the call of duty and it was fantastic to see them receive a standing ovation at our annual dinner, when we made the presentation."
