Jamestown Plumber Says Sorry For Stealing From Homes

    - July 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Jamestown man is apologizing. He admits to stealing from people's homes while on the job. "I made a bad decision, took advantage of them, and that's what I didn't want to do, so but whatever has to be done to pay them back, I'll do it," says Chad Gourneau, who is facing multiple charges for theft and burglary.

Police say he stole upwards of $20,000 of coins, jewelry, and silver while doing plumbing, heating, and cooling work inside people's homes in Jamestown.

Two people in Jamestown called our whistleblower hotline, concerned that Gourneau, who is also a registered sex offender, was working in their home.

"I'm not insured to take thing kind of hit," says James Hoffman, who says Gourneau stole from him.

Hoffman called a plumber back in February to come fix his furnace, "and the next thing you know there's things missing in my house," he says.

He soon to realize valuable coins were missing from his room.

"There are a lot of people out there in Jamestown right now that still don't realize they have stuff missing," says Hoffman.

The plumber that showed up to Hoffmans, was Chad Gourneau. Who admits to lifting things out houses he was working in.

"It was there, I took it, took advantage of it, and just making that choice there, it's ruined by life, ruined my career I had with plumbing company I was glad to work with," says Gourneau.

He is formerly employed at Pioneer Plumbing in Jamestown.

4OYS: Plumber now faces 16 charges of fraud

    - July 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Updated: 07/28/2014 10:20 PM | Created: 07/28/2014 10:00 PM By: Chris Ramirez, 4 On Your Side

More than a dozen new charges of fraud have been brought against a plumber that was shown attempting to pull a fast one on a 4OYS producer last February.

John Montano faces 16 different charges of fraud after customers claim his company Superior Plumbing was paid for work that never started.

The number of cases spiked after Montano's scheme was uncovered on KOB Eyewitness News 4 last year, Bernalillo County Sheriff's detective Russell Telles said.

"Pretty much with him what makes this a criminal case is simply he went and offered services, people paid him and for the most part, nothing was done," he said.

Montano has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

"I've never ripped anybody off," he told 4OYS last February. "We've always done the repairs."

In response to a question about the allegations made by his former customers, Montano blamed issues with his ex-wife.

However he did not go into detail as he shunned away the 4OYS cameras.

Now, he faces indictments in two different counties and possible time in state prison.

Iowa City police give burglary prevention tips

    - July 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

While the temperature may not feel like it, it's definitely summer time, and the Iowa City Police Department wants to remind everyone that the risk of having your home, business or vehicle burglarized can be reduced.

The police department says by taking these few simple steps, your property will be more difficult to enter and less enticing to would-be burglars:

Secure and lock all residential and vehicle doors and windows before leaving for the day or going to bed for the night. This includes shutting overhead garage doors.

Make your home look occupied. This could include connecting inside lights to an automatic timer or installing motion sensitive lighting on the outside of your home.

Make it time consuming for a burglar to enter your property by installing deadbolts on exterior doors and placing additional locks on all windows and patio doors.

Do not leave valuables (electronics, purses and wallets, money, etc.) in plain view inside a vehicle. Even if the vehicle is locked, seeing an item through the window may encourage a burglar to break in to take the item.

Be aware and call 9-1-1. Many burglary arrests are initiated by a person viewing what they believe may be a suspicious person, activity or burglary in progress and officers responding to the area. Even when an arrest is not made, a simple call to activate a police response can deter a burglar from committing the crime.

Most burglaries are simply crimes of opportunity. Remember the greatest weapons in the fight to prevent burglaries are light, time and noise.

Officers want to remind residents that burglaries don't just happen during night-time hours, burglars strike in the day and evening hours as well.

    Carpenters Cry Foul

    - July 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Three days after the state shut down a painting contractor working at Yale, two union carpenters showed up at the site with a huge sign and a demand.

David Jarvis and Tim Sullivan (pictured), two organizers with the New England Regional Council of Carpenters, stood behind the sign Monday at the corner of High and Elm streets and waved at passing cars.

Are law-breaking contractors working here now? the sign read.

On Friday, the state Department of Labor issued a stop-work order at the renovation of Berkeley College, at 205 Elm St. Inspectors found that HG Painting of New Haven, a subcontractor, did not have payroll records or proof of workers compensation for its workers at the site.

It was one of two stop-work orders issued Friday in town.

Without workers comp, someone who gets hurt can become a burden to society, Sullivan said. And without payroll records, theres no way to ensure that a contractor follows wage laws.

Sullivan called on Yale to act. Wed like to see a strong policy by Yale addressing our concerns, he said. Yale should ensure that all contractors and subcontractors are following all labor laws, he said. Yale never would have tolerated this in the past.

Sullivan said the fault lies with Whiting and Turner, the contractor overseeing the Berkeley College job.

Two Whiting and Turner supervisors at the site declined to comment.

Subtext, Hire us next time or well continue to break your stones. No wonder construction in New England is the most expensive in the country.
