Smart locks are becoming increasingly popular, with examples currently including the Lockitron and the Schlage Camelot Touchscreen Deadbolt. Many of the devices, however, go through batteries pretty quickly. It's with this in mind that the creators of the Genie Smart Lock set out to design a device with the features of other models, but much less power drain.
Like most of the smart locks out there, Genie allows users to unlock their door with the help of a smartphone. It uses both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to accomplish this, which gives buyers the option of unlocking their door from anywhere their phone has an internet connection, or by just walking up to the door with their phone or Bluetooth fob close at hand. They can also grant temporary door-unlocking privileges to other people, such as house guests or maid services.
The main selling point of this particular lock, however, is the battery life. Most smart locks average about a month of use per charge, but the Genie promises up to 12 months of life. This is done using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). The lock itself only sends out BLE signals, and the Genie Hub, a Wi-Fi-connected device that is part of the system, receives those signals and sends them to the user's smartphone through Wi-Fi. This means the lock itself is never actually connected to and searching for a wireless internet signal, thus keeping power consumption very low.
For users who are not interested in the Wi-Fi features, the lock can be used with just the BLE connectivity without the Genie Hub. Of course, users who go this way will be missing out on all of the remote unlocking features, but having options is always a good thing.
As with all smart locks, should the battery die at some point, a traditional key is also included for emergency unlocking. Also, another important thing to note is that the lock is designed to work with standard 54-mm door holes, and can be replaced with a traditional lock without leaving a trace a feature renters will find useful.
The creators of the Genie Smart Lock are taking pre-orders right now. They are offering a few packages, but the main one is US$249 and includes the lock, the hub, two traditional keys, one Bluetooth fob, and two Bluetooth eKeys. They also have a slightly more expensive package that includes unlimited Bluetooth eKeys that can be sent to others for $329.

Luis Rodriguez, left, and Will Barefield, with Bellhops work to move a chair from the Legacy at Fort Clarke apartments on Thursday, July 24, 2014 in Gainesville, Fla. Bellhops uses college students to help people move. At getbellhops.com, users schedule a date and time they want movers to arrive, and Bellhops load or unload their belongings.
Apartment turn season is a massive undertaking in a major college town with thousands of students to move and thousands of apartments to clean in a short time.
Several businesses have built their models around mobilizing a small army of college students for the busy period from late July until school starts, then cutting back on staff and hours when students are looking for part-time work that fits their school schedules anyway.
When they're out of class, that's when we need them, and when we need to cut back there's no hard feelings because they're looking for a different workload, said Wade Swikle, president of the 2 College Brothers moving company.
The company, which started in 2011, has been ramping up to 18 employees for its busiest period over the next two weeks, with 75 moving jobs already scheduled this week, and probably will pare back down to 10 employees when school starts, Swikle said.
2 College Brothers has two trucks of its own and will be renting at least two more this week through an account with Penske.
Employees who want to keep working after turn season can stay on the payroll and pick their own schedule from moving jobs posted on a cloud-based calendar.
For the next month, Student Maid is hiring upward of 400 students which includes high schoolers in the summer to clean thousands of empty apartments. Owner Kristen Hadeed said the business will keep the best 100 workers for the rest of the year when they clean more homes, businesses and schools, as well as providing house sitting, pet sitting and dog walking services. Employees make $9 to $11 an hour.
Hadeed started the company five years ago while a student at the University of Florida because she had a hard time finding a job that was flexible with her school schedule.
Celena Letcher, 21, said Student Maid's flexible scheduling was most important to her when looking for a job. For the past year and a half, she has worked about 20 hours a week around her school and sorority functions.

By Chester County Health Department For Main Line Media News
The treatment will be administered with truck-mounted spray equipment. The equipment dispenses Permanone RTU, a permethrin insecticide product, at a rate of 1.5 ounces per acre. These products are designed to provide quick, effective control of adult mosquito populations. The application materials have a very low toxicity profile to mammals and are safe for the environment when used in accordance with prescribed application methods.
To receive email notifications of future sprays, sign up for Health Department updates or follow us on Facebook or Twitter.
The chance of contracting WNV from an infected mosquito is small and chances of becoming seriously ill are even smaller, however, the Health Department recommends that individuals take personal precautions to minimize the possibility of being bitten by infected mosquitoes. This includes staying indoors at dawn or dusk when mosquitoes are most active, wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants when outside and using insect repellents when mosquitoes are active. The heightened concern will probably remain until the first frost which usually occurs in mid-October.
Residents are encouraged to take the following precautions to reduce mosquito breeding on their property:
Dispose of open containers that may collect water, such as tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots, etc.
Drill holes in the bottom of outdoor recycling containers so that water will not collect.
Keep your property clear of old tires.
Clean roof gutters, particularly if leaves from surrounding trees have a tendency to plug drains.
Turn over plastic wading pools when not in use. Continued...

Chicago Cubs outfielder Chris Coghlan visits with a patient at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. | Steve Metsch/For Sun-Times Media

After he visited Tuesday with sick children at Advocate Childrens Hospital in Oak Lawn, Chicago Cubs outfielder Chris Coghlan said he felt like the day may have meant more to him than the kids.
We have a tendency to complain and think we dont have it good. When you see the kids, your heart breaks for them because of their innocence and what theyre going through, Coghlan said. And it gives you encouragement because you watch a kid who is so young to have that much courage to fight for their life. Originally, you come because you want to give back, but you take away probably more than they take away (from this visit).
Coghlan, 29, met with about 10 children with various medical problems, ranging from cancer to injuries that are not life-threatening but serious enough to require hospitalization.
The kids were thrilled to see a real big leaguer. Coghlan wore his white home jersey with the blue pinstripes and distinctive Cubs logo.
Every time you come to a hospital, you think of what more you can do. Its humbling and gives you great perspective. It would help anybody regardless of their profession because it gives you perspective of how good we really have it, Coghlan said.
Beau Morgan, 7, of Steger, was at the hospital because he injured his pancreas in a bicycle accident. Hes getting better, mom Kirsten St. Pierre said.

An 18-year-old Boston man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl during a Keith Urban concert at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Mass. on July 26.
The teenage girl was was allegedly sexually assaulted on the lawn area of the venue while others watched and took videos with their cell phones, The Sun Chronicle reports.
The suspect, Sean Murphy, pleaded innocent to the rape and claims that the incident was consensual. His parents were reportedly expected to post the bail for his release, which is set at $10,000.
Police say that Murphy and the girl met for the first time at the concert and began kissing near a concession stand before moving to the lawn area. An off-duty police officer intervened after seeing a large group of people surrounding them while taking videos and photos. Murphy was arrested shortly thereafter. According to police, both he and the girl were consuming alcohol during the concert, The Sun Chronicle reports.
During the show, 46 people received medical treatment for alcohol-related illnesses and 50-plus people were taken into protective custody. About 18,000 people attended Saturday's concert.

After more than two years of battling Longwood City Hall, Florida's court system and his neighbors along with racking up nearly $200,000 in code enforcement fines Sean Law has cleaned up his front yard.
"It is an improvement. It looks dramatically better," city Commissioner Joe Durso said. "But we've still got some more work to do."
Law's neighbor, Kathy Ettman, agreed.
"I'm glad to see it this way," Ettman said, standing on her driveway and looking across East Maine Avenue to Law's property.
"Oh, I hope it stays this way."
Law could not be reached for comment.
His case began in 2012 when the city of Longwood began issuing fines for having high grass, weeds, dead wood and other debris in his yard at the corner of East Maine and South Oak Street.
But Law disagreed.
