QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - Quincy residents looking to find an apartment will soon have another option.

Work to transform the former Emerson School building into a high-end apartment complex is nearly finished.

Crews are hard at work putting the finishing touches on the new Emerson Garden Apartments complex at 1310 Washington Street in Quincy. Co-owner Richard Powell says he took on the project not only to provide additional renting options to residents, but also to preserve the original brick work and history of the old school building.

"Any time you can save a building such as this built in 1900, it's got a lot of character to it and a lot of things that we find here in the building has history and we like that part of it that we can save some," Powell said.

Powell says the eight unit facility has both two and three bedroom options. Rent ranges from $800 to $1095. The apartment complex is set to open in mid-August. To find out more about renting a unit, call 217-209-0926

ATTLEBORO Land and money havent changed hands, but construction of a second apartment building downtown twice the size of one already under way, and just across the street from it, seems like a done deal.

Mayor Kevin Dumas and a lawyer for developer Marco Crugnale, whos building Renaissance Station, an 80-unit apartment building on the corner of Wall and South Main streets, were both optimistic Tuesday that a 160-unit apartment building on the south side of Wall Street will start going up next year as downtowns transit-oriented revitalization picks up speed.

A London pilot project allowing downtown restaurants to turn parking spaces into mini-patios has stalled.

Introduced in 2012, the idea was trumpeted as a way to draw people to the core and give eateries without patios a much-needed boost during the spring and summer months.

After two downtown restaurants signed up the first year, politicians extended the program until 2015 and even talked of expanding it to other neighbourhoods such as Old East Village.

But two years after the first parking-spot patio was rolled out, only a single downtown diner is taking it to the street.

Maybe it hasnt caught on as much we would like (it) to, but it is still working, said Ron Gasparetto, the citys co-ordinator for realty services.

Were not out there pounding the pavement pushing the program.

Modelled on a successful plan in Birmingham, Mich., the idea is part of a master vision for the core aimed at making it more people-friendly.

Two restaurants The Early Bird on Talbot St. and Jambalaya on Dundas St. set up seasonal patios in parking spaces for the past two years.

But the recent closing of Jambalaya leaves the Early Bird as the sole participant of the fledgling program.

That has owner Justin Wolfe worried about its future.
