Zoning is becoming more and more popular in the residential and commercial markets. In residential applications, accessing duct work can present a challenge in existing construction. When bonus rooms and room additions are considered, there may not be duct work running to these areas.
Jackson Systems introduces the latest in zone control, the Motorized Zone Register (MZR). The MZR is a low-cost, rugged, metal, motorized zone register designed to work with most forced air zone control systems. It can also be used as a stand-alone register with a wall-mounted thermostat to eliminate over-heating and over-cooling in bonus rooms, sun rooms, guest rooms and basements.
This easy-to-install zone register allows zoning to be installed in almost all residential applications. It is designed to fit most register boots and comes in many sizes, most in both tan and white. There is also a polymer version available for side wall installations.
The MZR is a standard register with a 24VAC spring open/power close actuator. It uses standard gauge thermostat wire (plenum-rated wire may be required if running through duct work.) The MZR can be wired to a stand-alone thermostat for control of the register in single zone applications, or it can be wired to a zone panel and for multiple zone applications. Up to 6 Motorized Zone Dampers can be connected to a single zone.
The MZR is another innovative solution from Jackson Systems designed to make zoning easier and more profitable for HVAC contractors.

The kitchen is its a big deal, for a lot of people.
After realizing that making a bigger deal out of it for smaller customers could be profitable, a Chicago-based plumbing company started using its Buffalo Grove facility as a showroom for complete kitchen remodeling.
Banner Plumbing recently opened a walk-in display area for individual homeowners looking to spruce up their kitchens.
The new showroom, on the second floor of their 1020 E. Lake Cook Road facility, shows potential customers a variety of looks for cabinets, backsplashes, appliances, sinks, electrical outlets, fixtures and, of course, the pipes that will keep all of this working.
We just decided were going to branch into the kitchen design world, said Marcus Voltz, Banners business development manager, who started planning the idea when he joined the company in 2012.
Banner is primarily a supplier to contractors. Its 20 delivery vehicles routinely stop at job sites at 4 or 5 a.m., Voltz said. But after the housing industry fell apart and sales slowed, the firm needed to look for new markets and Voltz found custom remodeling for existing homes.
Its nothing new or fresh, but how we approach it is, he said. We think we have one of the nicer showrooms in the industry.
And, he hopes, one of the nicer staffs.
Knowing that plenty of remodeling research and sales, can be done on the Internet, Voltz lures customers away from their computers and into his facility with warm greetings, soft beverages and a well-lit, exciting-looking display area.
Once there, potential buyers check out the brands of cabinets, appliances, lights and fixtures with which Banner has partnerships and the numerous combinations of materials the company offers.

It has been more than a decade since a new commercial office building was built in downtown Columbia, a drought some say contributed to a vapid atmosphere downtown.
David Costello knows the story, and the environment, all too well because his company, Costello Construction, was the last to build an office structure more than 12 years ago.
"It's starting to become more vibrant, but it was dead. It was dead for 10 years," said Costello, whose offices are located on the downtown lakefront. "I sit at my office and look out and won't see anybody for three or four hours at a time."
On Tuesday, Costello and his business partner, Kingdon Gould Jr., a 90-year-old developer and former U.S. ambassador, took a step toward reviving the area by breaking ground on Little Patuxent Square -- a nine-story, $75 million mixed-use commercial building to be built on a vacant lot between the lakefront and the Columbia Mall.
Costello said the project is a true mixed-use. It will house 160 condominium units and 160,000 square feet of office and retail. He said 120,000 square feet of the project has been pre-leased to a Maryland-based technology company, but did not disclose the name.
The project also will house 740 below-ground parking spaces. It is expected to be complete in July2016.
Development of the site has been a long time coming and has caused anxiety among residents. A former owner proposed building a 22-story building on the site, but eventually abandoned the plan, which was opposed, after encountering financial troubles during the recession.
The property sat idle until Costello bought it in 2012 and began working on the current project. He said the ground-breaking signifies a new beginning for downtown.
"It means more to me, frankly, as a member of the community than it does as a business person. And I mean that sincerely," Costello said. "I love the fact that it means more people. It means we are bringing people, bringing jobs, bringing commerce. As a guy who sits in a desk 100 yards away, I want to see people."
Gould said he like the idea of developing in Columbia and that he thought it was ideal for this kind of project.
