A man disguised as a plumber burglarized an elderly couples Russian Hill home Wednesday using a scam about the quality of their water, Officer Gordon Shyy said.

The suspect approached the 80-year-old male victim in the 1900 block of Taylor Street about 12:30 p.m. as he was parking his car in his garage and told the victim his water was contaminated and that he needed to come inside and check it out, Shyy said.

The man let the suspect in and they went upstairs to the bathroom to check the water there, police said. The suspect then said he needed to go out to his truck to get some tools.

Meanwhile, the man waited in the bathroom for the so-called plumber to return, but he never did. When the mans 86-year-old wife returned home, she noticed her jewelry was missing.

Police did not have a detailed description of the suspect, only that he was a man in his 40s dressed in a manner that led the victim to believe he was in fact a plumber, Shyy said.

No arrest has been made.

Following the incident, police are reminding the public that any contractor or maintenance worker, whether they work for Comcast, PG&E or any city agency, must have a visible photo ID, Shyy said. If there is ever some skepticism about a contractors legitimacy, they are required to show an official photo ID when asked.

If they dont have one, they are not legitimate, Shyy said. If there are further questions, police will send officers out to investigate.

Jorden Medina of Taos pleaded guilty this morning to a federal involuntary manslaughter charge in the shooting death of Taos Pueblo resident Nicholas Concha in November, the U.S. Attorneys Office said in a news release.

Medina, 54, was arrested on Dec. 2 and charged with shooting Concha, 28, after a confrontation at a convenience store on Nov. 30. Medina was indicted and charged with second degree murder. He (Medina) saw that male fall to the ground, and then panicked and sped away, according to an FBI affidavit.

Concha was the lead singer of a group called Hail Creek, which appeared at powwows, including the 2013 Taos Pueblo Powwow, according to the New Mexico Powwow website.

According to the release, During todays plea hearing, Medina pleaded guilty to an information charging him with involuntary manslaughter and admitted shooting the victim at a gas station in Taos Pueblo. In his plea agreement, Medina stated that he was putting fuel into his truck when the victim physically attacked him, knocking him to the ground. Medina responded to the attack by retrieving a pistol from his truck and firing a single bullet at the victim and killed him.

Medina remains in custody pending his sentencing. At sentencing, Medina faces a statutory maximum penalty of eight years in prison followed by a term of supervised release to be determined by the court, the news release said.

Pest control may be last chance for Waikaia mhua

The recent rediscovery of threatened mhua/yellowhead in Waikaia Forest, northern Southland, means a pest control operation planned by the Department of Conservation (DOC) soon is essential.

DOC Catlins services ranger Cheryl Pullar said consent by Environment Southland for the drop had been granted and they expected it to go ahead in August or September.

Ms Pullar said the sighting of mhua last year surprised DOC staff as they thought the birds had disappeared from this area during the last beech mast in 2000. This years beech mast means rats, mice and stoats could reach damaging levels again by summer.

DOC scientist Graeme Elliott said if pest control was not carried out in Waikaia forest, mhua would completely disappear from the area forever. This may be the last opportunity to protect them and recover this population, Mr Elliott said.

Mhua were once common in Southland but now lived only in fragmented populations. Theyve already gone from patches of bush around Southland and this years beech mast will finish them off in Waikaia if we dont control the rats, mice and stoats, Mr Elliott said.

Pest control will allow this population of mhua to recover to similar levels of those in the Catlins, where flocks of dozens of mhua are visible, especially along the upper end of the Catlins River Walk.

Ms Pullar said DOC was in the planning stages of the aerial drop which would cover just under 7000 hectares of the Waikaia Forest in northern Southland, as part of the national Battle for our Birds operation. Ms Pullar and other staff have been consulting with the local community on the operation.

Silver beech in the area were masting heavily and tracking tunnels by DOC to measure the density of rats showed there was a rise in the population, Ms Pullar said. When the seeds ran out, rats and stoats would target native species, including mhua. DOC planned and delivered these operations carefully to ensure aerial sowing of 1080 was accurate.

Boundaries of the areas will be marked with GPS technology and buffer zones from the boundaries, around waterways and other non target areas have also been plotted. Signage warning of the operation will be put up at entries to the forest, and tracks within the operation areas will be cleared by DOC staff at the time of the operation, she said.
