Child hurt in bicycle crash with retaining wall

    - July 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Emergency crews responded to Harbor Drive and Y Drive along the waterfront at about 8:30 p.m.

Witnesses said the 4-year-old Muskegon boy came down the hill by the YMCA, went across the street, went down the hill some more, fell off his bike and hit his head on a retaining wall.

Police said the child was unable to stop.

Seventeen-year-old Ben Schultz of Wyoming said the child was halfway over the wall, about to fall into the water, when he grabbed the boy's legs and brought him back to safety.

Schultz said the boy's father ran up and carried the child back across Harbor Drive, where he was met by paramedics and police.

The child suffered a head injury and was transported by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital.

No further information was available on the child's condition.

Work to enhance stormwater collection pond in Bukit Panjang starts

    - July 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SINGAPORE - Work has begun on enhancements for Pang Sua Pond in Bukit Panjang, one of the 16 stormwater collection ponds here, with a groundbreaking ceremony at Senja-Cashew Community Club on Sunday morning.

Get the full story from The Straits Times.

Here is the statement from the Public Utilities Board:

A boardwalk that enhances connectivity between the Pang Sua Pond and the neighbouring amenities, two lookout decks that provide a panoramic view of the waters, and a multi-purpose stage for performances by the water - these are what residents can look forward to when the Pang Sua Pond undergoes a makeover under PUB's Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme.

Guest-of-Honour Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources and Adviser for the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, unveiled the upcoming ABC Waters project at a groundbreaking ceremony this morning.

A new boardwalk around the Pang Sua Pond is set to become a community focal point, connecting residents to facilities in the vicinity such as the Senja-Cashew Community Club, Bukit Panjang Neighbourhood 5 Park and the future 3G Wellness Centre. Elevated above the water, the boardwalk brings residents closer to water so that they can better enjoy this precious resource.

PUB will also be building two lookout decks that offer panoramic views of the waterfront and a multi-purpose stage for outdoor performances. When completed, the new features will integrate seamlessly with the Community Club, blending in with the tranquil and picturesque surroundings.

The Pang Sua Pond, located south of the Bukit Panjang Neighbourhood 5 Park, is a stormwater collection pond that collects runoff from the surrounding areas before it is pumped to the Upper Seletar Reservoir for storage.

As part of the transformation, PUB and the National University of Singapore (NUS) with Deltares will be test-bedding a new ABC Waters design feature - in-stream wetlands. To be located at the mouth of the adjoining Pang Sua East Canal, the trial will test the effectiveness of in-stream wetlands in treating the dry weather flow1 before it drains into the pond.

Together with the floating wetlands that will be constructed in the Pang Sua Pond, these ABC Waters design features will help to cleanse water naturally using plants, while beautifying the surrounding landscape and enhancing biodiversity. To further improve water quality in the Pang Sua Pond, aerators and a recirculation system will be installed.

$6.8million facelift for Bukit Panjang pond

    - July 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SINGAPORE - Normally considered an area out of reach for Bukit Panjang residents, Pang Sua pond will undergo a makeover so that residents can use it for physical and other recreational activities.

A new boardwalk around the 3ha storm-water collection pond will be constructed to connect residents to facilities such as the Senja-Cashew Community Club and Bukit Panjang Neighbourhood 5 Park.

Part of national water agency PUB's Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters Programme, the project will also include the building of two lookout decks and a multipurpose stage on the water for outdoor performances.

"Every pond, every waterway in Singapore is a potential community feature, and we will work with local communities to generate ideas so that there'll be facilities which families can use," said Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan, who unveiled the $6.8 million project at the Senja-Cashew community club yesterday. It is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2016.

Dr Balakrishnan, an adviser to Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, added that the project will be integrated with transport plans for the neighbourhood.

"I want to have a way in which our children can walk, jog or cycle throughout the town without having to worry about vehicular traffic," he said.

PUB and the National University of Singapore, together with Dutch applied-research institute Deltares, will be test-bedding in-stream wetlands using plants such as pandan to absorb unwanted nutrients such as phosphorus from storm-water run-off before it reaches the pond.

"We want to treat the water before it reaches the pond so that the water quality in the pond will be improved," said Tan Nguan Sen, PUB's chief sustainability officer.

Shirley Yeo, 68, a Bukit Panjang resident, who leads a group of over 100 for brisk walks twice a week, is looking forward to the enhancements.

"I can take the group to walk in this area. The scenery is very nice and it's cool there," said the billing assistant.

July is prime time for relaxing on the porch, and Western New York has some real beauties from charming Colonials to …

    - July 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Whether its for reading, entertaining or simply keeping up with the neighbors, a front porch for many is a most inviting retreat. Not quite inside but not quite out, a porch offers shelter from the rain, a place to work a crossword puzzle, a cozy spot for unwinding after a long day. Porches of many styles are found on homes of all ages including new houses, as many homeowners long to become better connected to their communities.

The best old porches have been lovingly cared for or restored, and the best new ones reflect the architectural style of the house and look as if they have always been there.

In the summer its a joy to come across an attractively decorated porch. American flags, colorful pillows, railing planters packed with flowers and dining tables topped with vintage linens all help create what one homeowner called an outdoor living room.

Then again, upkeep and renovation can be costly. Theft of furniture is not unheard of, which is why some homeowners secure it to railings. Privacy may become an issue. A street-facing porch is not a private backyard deck.

Still, porch fans say the positives outweigh the negatives. Good conversations can take place here. Family memories made. A new or updated porch adds curb appeal.

Cost-wise, on an existing porch, you can spend a few thousand dollars to replace railings and porch decking, said Mike Washington, president of Ivy Lea Construction of Tonawanda.

Adding a new porch, from the ground up, can cost anywhere from $15,000 to $30,000 depending on materials and size, he said.

If the porch is structurally fine, you can spruce it up for a couple hundred dollars with a fresh coat of paint, he added.

Even small porches can offer plenty of charm, as can second-story porches beloved by many Buffalonians. You dont have to look far to spot some stylish porches. Turn to Page F5 to see some we came across.

The only thing missing from a recent visit to Marc and Susan Carpenters front porch was a parade on the nearby street. Early Americana is the theme here, with white wicker chairs, red cushions, a collection of flags and vintage decor. Most everything is original on this wraparound porch, including the pillars, floor and front door. Last year some of the wood spindles on the railing needed to be replaced because they had rotted.

    Seddon church to be demolished

    - July 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Quake damage spells end for building SVEN HERSELMAN

The St Andrew's Presbyterian Church building in Seddon is to be demolished in just a few weeks because of earthquake damage.

The church, built in 1955, has not been used by its large congregation since the severe earthquakes that rocked area in July and August last year. The Rev Dawn Daunauda said the demolition would be an emotional experience for the congregation and the wider community.

She said the decision to demolish the church building came after months of consultation and was not made lightly.

"The decision was made on April 13. It was unanimous, which was really good."

The building sustained severe damage in both major quakes, making repairs unfeasible.

The church management team had been working with the Marlborough District Council, Simcox Construction and the national Presbyterian Property Trust.

"They have all been so supportive. Council waived the demolition fee, which was very generous, and Simcox have done a special deal for us for the demolition work. Simcox have been great," Daunauda said.

The demolition crew would work with church management during the demolition to save whatever parts of the building they could.

Unfortunately, the stained glass windows cannot be saved as work to remove them would be too expensive because of the structural damage the building had sustained, Daunauda said.

Sacred space: Downtown church dedicates new columbarium

    - July 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Rev. Susan Pate Greenwood, center in red, speaks during the consecration service for Centenary United Methodist Churchs new Columbarium and Memorial Garden.

New Berns Centenary United Methodist Church dedicated its new Columbarium and Memorial Garden Sunday after nearly five years of planning, design and construction.

The Rev. Susan Pate Greenwood, the churchs senior pastor, conducted a ritual of consecration following Sundays worship service in the small garden fronting New Street. About 150 people attended the event, which followed the 11 a.m. church service.

The beautifully landscaped memorial garden has four benches and underground niches for urns covered with granite nameplates line. Above-ground niches are in two locations.

Speaking briefly to a group that filled the new garden and spilled over onto adjacent areas, Greenwood said the columbarium and celebratory event were only possible because of the dogged determination, tenacity and generosity of a few dedicated church members who longed for a sacred place for the ashes of their loved ones.

She praised the committee that worked on getting both church council and New Bern Historical Preservation Committee approval, and she expressed appreciation for the help of neighboring Christian communities who shared information about their columbaria, including Garber United Methodist Church in Trent Woods, and neighboring First Presbyterian Church and Christ Episcopal Church.

Greenwood had special recognition for Mary Cox Bullock, who was a guiding force of the Centenary Columbarium and Memorial Garden.

Her many years of faithful and diligent labor made it possible, the pastor said.

Bullock worked for more than 14 years, through several different committees and church councils, which tabled the proposal, before seeing the Centenary Columbarium and Memorial Garden become a reality.

After the dedication, Bullock brushed off the praise, saying, It was just persistence and my big mouth.
