Indiana's attorney general has filed a lawsuit against a company for making illegal robo-calls. Greg Zoeller's office says Jerome Edmond and USA Promotions impersonated an ADT home security systems representative and offered "free" alarm systems.
Over 160 Indiana residents in 13 counties filed complaints about the company, with most coming from Marion, Hamilton and Hendricks Counties.
Reportedly, the pre-recorded message stated, in part: "This is a public safety call. Due to the rise in residential burglaries in your community ADT will be giving you a free ADT Home Security Alarm System with free installation and activation which means you pay absolutely nothing out of pocket for this security system. This promotion expires in your community this week so it's important you return our phone call right away. You can reach us toll-free at ----."
ADT said no one from its company placed those calls.
Zoeller called it "scamming at its worst" because it was taking advantage of genuine concern about rising crime.
The lawsuit seeks fines and penalties and a permanent injunction against Edmond, an Illinois resident, and his unregistered company U.S.A. Promotions, for calls violating Indiana's Telephone Privacy law and the state's Auto-Dialer law, and for falsely representing that he was an affiliate of ADT.
In June, the Attorney General's Office also filed suit against Power Home Technologies, Inc., a North Carolina home security seller. That case is pending.
The attorney general's office warns what to watch out for:
Consumers should beware of unscrupulous home security sellers who promise a "free" home security system in order to lure them into signing a long-term alarm monitoring contract.

Indiana attorney general files suit over robo-call scam
Back in May, the Edwardsville City Council approved the reconstruction of Grand Avenue, but a change order for the project is now needed, as remnants of Old Poag Road were found.
Public Works Director Eric Williams explained that while crews were excavating within the roadway, they encountered some concrete pavement underneath the roadway on the city's section and the township's section of the project.
While completing the design portion of the project for the storm sewer, cores were done and no pavement was found. Williams said those areas already had the concrete removed from previous work.
"What we are removing are sections of concrete that were not previously removed. The concrete is in conflict with the proposed improvements, so we do have to move it," Williams said.
With the concrete in place, proper grade could not be made.
The concrete was found on a section of Rose Avenue and it is believed to be part of Old Poag Road.
The change order to Kamadulski Excavating and Grading Co. is for $15,675.
According to the change order, 1,000 square feet of concrete will be removed on Rose and Grand Avenues. In addition, five working days will be added to the contract, extending total length of the contract from 75 days to 80 days.
A motion and second were made and the contract was approved unanimously.
Meanwhile, the council also approved eight contracts for materials needed by the Public Works Department for the completion of asphalt patching, sidewalk repairs, pothole patching and other work.

The executive responsible for the notorious White Sox promotion disaster is bringing it to the minors.
Mike Veeck was the promoter responsible for the infamous "Disco Demolition Night," a 1979 disco-record-exploding promotion gone so dangerously awry that the White Sox had to forfeit the second game of their doubleheader with the Tigers and people lost their jobs. Veeck is now president of the (Bill Murray co-owned) Charleston RiverDogs, andhe's bringing a modern variant of the promotion back:
On Saturday, July 19, the Charleston RiverDogs will host "Disco Demolition 2: You Better Belieb It," a modern sequel featuring the destruction of Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus music and paraphernalia. The RiverDogs will play the Augusta GreenJackets at 6:05 pm at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, and a postgame Bieber/Cyrus demolition on the field will follow the contest.
"Like so many, we have taken special exception to Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus's music along with his numerous run-ins with the law and her controversial performances," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "'Disco Demolition 2' is dedicated to the eradication of their dread musical disease, like the original Disco Demolition attempted to do. We are going to take Bieber and Cyrus's merchandise and memorabilia, put it in a giant box, and blow it to smithereens. It is all in good fun, and we guarantee there won't be a forfeit of a game."
Veeck and the RiverDogs -- who will also issue "Mike Veeck bobble-legs" for the occasion -- have a sense of humor about the fairly serious fallout from the original event, while promising this time will be different:
