Cleaning blitz initiative begins in Lawrence

    - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LAWRENCE As a part of an initiative the mayor has dubbed Clean Lawrence, a street cleaning blitz is underway. For the next 90 days, 25 temporary Department of Public Works employees will be walking through the city picking up trash and talking to residents about proper disposal procedures.

The city will spend $195,000 to pay the laborers $15 an hour for their work. They are on the street sporting lime green shirts and traffic vests from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., picking up trash from areas of the city that go unattended. Department of Public Works director John Isensee said the teams will start downtown and work into more residential parts of the city, focusing on alleyways, vacant lots and gutters. He said he is hoping to keep the gateways to the city clean and then work inward, while accommodating requests from residents.

The move is not just for the sake of beautification, but could save the city money in the long run, according to Isensee. Lawrence has a contract with a private company to have waste hauled out of the city. For trash removal, the department pays $68 per ton. But for recyclables, hauling is free.

If you go around the gutter line, and you take all the trash there, and you put it in a bag, youll find that its all recyclable, he said. Bottles, cans, cups, paper litter. Those are standard items. All of those things are recyclable.

The team has been given an eye-catching uniform so that residents will be encouraged to ask them questions, Isensee said. He and Moises Brea, who coordinates the recycling program, hope to impart residents with an understanding that it is partly their responsibility to keep garbage off the streets.

Weve also strategically placed barrels in areas where parks are, in high traffic areas, Brea said. Were trying to produce an attitude shift to get people to start making it a habit.

6 chores to do before a storm

    - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Residents of a Subdivision in Cainta survey the damage of his house over fallen trees and dangling Meralco wires because of the Fury of typhoon Glenda . AUGUST DELA CRUZ

Typhoon Glenda cut a wide swath of destruction in the country a few days ago. As an archipelago lying right on the path of most southwestern Pacific weather disturbances, the Philippines can expect at least dozens more of these typhoons to come ashore just for this rainy season alone.

Can your home take such pounding? Here are six necessary measures to take for your house to emerge still standing after the storms.

1 Start from the top. Mind your roof and gutters. Repair leaks. Clean gutters, says civil engineer Alexis Acacio, director of the UP Institute of Civil Engineering.

Architect Froilan L . Hong agrees. He says that chicken wire should be installed on gutters to keep falling leaves and debris out to prevent these from clogging the drains. He adds, Repair or replace any damaged roofing sheets, shingles or flashing to prevent leaks when it rains.

Architect Amado de Jesus, Inquirer Property Green Architrends columnist, also says, Clean and seal your gutter and drainage systems.

2 Keep the drains and curb inlets clear. Landscape architect Dickie Altavas stresses the necessity of cleaning out drains and curb inlets to avoid flooding. He urges homeowners to reduce, reuse, recycle and refrain from throwing trash indiscriminately to avoid clogged drains and the resulting floods and the water-borne diseases they bring.

Altavas adds: And while at it, homeowners can gently remind trash collectors to be more careful in loading trash onto their trucks. Theres usually a trail of garbage after them.

3 Create a swale system. De Jesus describes the swale system as a natural way to drain rainwater through a gently sloping canal with grass to allow rainwater to be absorbed by the ground. It reduces the need for an expensive concrete drainage system.

4 Turn trees into allies. Its good that more homeowners are planting greens and developing green landscapes in their houses. However, architect Edilberto J. Morcilla, chair and cofounder of NEDsteel Construction and Development Corp., reminds homeowners that they should also be careful in choosing what they plant.

Sod shortage worsens in Twin Cities

    Sod shortage(Photo: KARE)

NORTHBRANCH, Minn. - The contraption lumbering across this Chisago County field is known as Sod Harvester. This year it could also be called a treasure hunter.

"trying to search around for any bit of sod we can possibly cut," says the machine's driver, Harley Johnson.

Johnson is a third generation sod farmer, in business with his father and sister, at HD Sod in Hugo.

The family's product has never been in shorter supply.

"it's been pretty rough," says Harley's father, also named Harley. "We had about 13 inches of rain and that's what really held us back."

That heavy rain flooded out newly seeded fields while keeping harvesters off soggy ground.

"On this side of the field over here, it's still too wet and soft," says the younger Johnson, pointing from the cab of the harvester."It's a good year that there's a lot of people needing sod, but a bad year that we just don't have it."

The seeds for a sod shortage were actually being sowed several years back. During the great recession new home construction waned. With fewer lawns to cover, sod farmers plowed up their grass to plant corn and soybeans, commodities which were rising in price at the time.

Re-sodding: An Annual City Hall Tradition

    - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Jon Willing - July 17th, 2014

A picture of City Hall on July 17, 2014 after workers covered the damaged lawn with more sod.

More sod went down at City Hall this week after the annual Great Grass Slaughter at 110 Laurier Ave.

The Jazzfest tent destroyed the grass.

Actually, the lawn is usually beat up at least twice a year: During the winter from the Rink of Dreams traffic, and during Jazzfest.

One thing theyre going to try and do at Lansdowne Park is keep stages and other pieces of big equipment on the porch outside Aberdeen Pavilion. No one wants to see the new grass on the Great Lawn ruined.

As for City Hall, I dont know what the long-term solution will be. Maybe re-sodding is it.

Vacation alert: Starting Friday, Im off for a couple weeks on vacation. Ill be back in early August, so dont expect much action on the blog in the meantime. Hope youre enjoying the summer.

KIRTLAND A new grass activity field is in the works for the Kirtland Youth Association after the group received a $50,000 grant from the Public Service Company of New Mexico.

The youth association is one of 24 nonprofit agencies in New Mexico and Texas to receive a grant from PNM Power Up Grants. The program distributed $500,000 to organizations for various community projects.

On Thursday, San Juan County Commissioners and representatives from local Navajo Nation chapters, San Juan United Way and the San Juan Generating Station attended a grant presentation in the parking lot of the Kirtland organization.

The Kirtland Youth Association is one of four agencies and the only one in the Four Corners to receive $50,000 from the PNM foundation. Twenty agencies each received $15,000 grants.

It's a dream come true to build the playing field for youth sports like football and soccer, said the Kirtland association's executive director, Charles Kromer. Members of the organization have worked hard to build the facility for the community, he said.

"We've trying to make it as successful for the community as we can," Kromer said.

At the presentation, children participating in the association's summer program sat in the bleachers set up in the parking lot. San Juan Generating Station Plant Manager Tom Fallgren opened the presentation by talking about the program and the effect the youth association has in the community.

"The Kirtland Youth Association is dedicated to serving the youth of the San Juan River valley with educational, recreational and social programs," Fallgren said.

York market moves to Parliament Street ahead of refurbishment

York market moves to Parliament Street ahead of refurbishment

    8:40am Friday 18th July 2014 in News

Work taking place at the site in Newgate, where there has been a market for more than 50 years

YORKS market has taken up temporary residence in its historical city-centre location as 1.5 million refurbishment work gets under way in Newgate.

Stallholders are now trading from Parliament Street, marking a return to the street where the market regularly operated 50 years ago.

The move back to Parliament Street is to make way for City of York Councils refurbishment of Newgate Market, which aims to improve infrastructure such as drainage and storage, with a better roof covering and lighting as well as improved signage, promotion and information about the market.

Andrew Kenny, of Fishmonger Cross of York, which has been trading in Newgate Market since 1956, said: The council has been very supportive in the move. I think they have had a very hard job and they have tried hard to meet everyones needs.

Its a whole new retail experience for us out here, especially for people who have been established in a certain position in Newgate for a lot of years.

Work is expected to take 16 weeks to complete, in time for the St Nicholas Fayre in late November.

Access through the market will be from the Kings Square end of Shambles and Newgate, while the snickelways from Shambles will be closed for the 16-week period.
