The demotion of Michael Gove, pictured, from Education Secretary to Chief Whip has 'shocked Middle England'
Most government reshuffles are - to put it bluntly - non-events: they are mere shifts of faceless men and women, vying with each other for insignificance.
But this one was in a different league, a small earthquake in Whitehall.
The sacking of Michael Gove - for assuredly, his demotion from Education Secretary to Chief Whip amounts to nothing less - has shocked Middle England.
Here was the undisputed Tory hero of the past four years - a man with a mission, a crusader, an obsessive, who has shown the courage to hurl himself into the task of salvaging Britains ruined schools system in a fashion no other holder of his office in modern times has attempted.

On July 20 at 9 p.m. HGTV viewers will get a chance to see what a local couple was able to accomplish while remodeling a condo. This is the first of eight episodes showing the couple through their trials.
Local Coronado resident Amanda Marks and her boyfriend Curtis Goldin of San Diego finished filming Flipping the Block in May. Four couples including Marks and Goldin were chosen to renovate a dilapidated condo in a complex in Glendale for a chance to win $50,000. During each episode, the teams are given a challenge to overcome. Marks and Goldin did most of the work themselves but were allowed to hire subcontractors like electricians and plumbers as needed through the general contractor on the show. Marks and Goldin had very long days while on the show. They worked from six or seven in the morning until midnight.
We tried to do all we could on our own, said Marks. Every team had a budget that could be used to hire subcontractors.
The budget was not large enough to hire everybody. The more you did yourself, the more you could splurge on other things, said Goldin.
Golden worked more than anybody else on the show, said Marks. We were the silver team; all the teams [were identified by] colors. Were the funniest and heaviest team on the block, said Goldin.
HGTV Nicole Curtis host of Rehab Addict and Scott McGillivray host of Income Property were the judges who decided who won the weekly prize which included extra cash for the couples budget. At the end of the show the condos were sold at a live auction and that is how the winning couple is chosen.
The duo remodeled the condo room by room. Until they finished the first room they slept on the floor on air mattresses inside the condo, used the old kitchen and bathroom. Every room we did had a tight timeline. Amanda worked in picking paint and furniture she didnt get as much time as she wouldve liked, said Goldin.
Marks and Goldin have been a couple for one-and-a-half years. They met while he was in the U.S. Navy and she worked as a barista at the Naval Amphibious Base.
Marks is the artistic type who loves to sing, decorate, and sculpt. She says she always dreamed of being a designer while Goldin worked in construction through high school and college. Goldin is currently attending San Diego State University studying engineering and Marks has been visiting family and helping decorate her aunts house.
Marks answered a Craigs list ad that was looking for a dynamic duo with an eye for design. The couple went to a casting call dressed in jeans and plaid shirts. At the casting call at a San Diego hotel there were 40 to 60 people dressed in suits with briefcases and iPads. We have nothing to lose, we said to ourselves and lo and behold we got picked, said Goldin. But not until they went to other interviews including one in New York where they met the executive producer of HGTV, a very exciting moment for Marks who has watched the channel since she was a child.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Fire tore through the office of a roofing business just outside the Springfield city limits early Thursday, destroying the building.
The fire was reported about 5:00 am at the Teague Roofing Company on Farm Road 115 just south of Sunshine.
Capt. Darren Campbell with the Brookline Fire Department says the building was engulfed in flames when firefighters first got there. There were problems getting water on the flames, Campbell said, when one fire hydrant wasn't working initially.
Campbell says firefighters were also concerned about propane tanks near the building and roofing chemicals stored on the property. But firefighters were able to protect those items from the heat and flames to avoid explosions.
No one was injured in the fire. Firefighters from Brookline, Battlefield, Willard and Ebenezer helped fight the fire.
The cause of the fire is not immediately determined.

Flames ripped through a roofing business in the Brookline area on Thursday morning.
Crews initially thought they were being dispatched to a single-family home in the 2900 block of Farm Road 115. When they got there, however, they discovered it was a house that had actually been converted into a business.
"The building was being used by Teague's Roofing," Fire Captain Darren Campbell told KTTS News. "We don't believe anyone was living in it."
Officials had reported hearing some small explosions. Campbell said they were fortunate some of the hazardous material didn't make matters worse. "We believe the noises we heard were caused by some of the roofing supplies and other items. We had a propane tank that didn't become an issue, but it easily could have."
Campbell said he's not sure what caused the fire and the building appears to be a total loss.
Brookline received assistance from a number of agencies including Battlefield, Republic, Springfield, and Willard.

Officials of PM Hospitality Strategies, Inc. (PMHS), a leading, national hotel management company, announced today that it capped off a record second quarter growth spurt with the recent addition/opening of three hotels, bringing to four the number of properties added to the company's rapidly growing, third-party hotel management portfolio in the past 10 weeks.
The three new hotels include the operator's entry into Manhattan under the Homewood Suites by Hilton brand, the acquisition of the Hilton Knoxville, Tennessee and the opening of the Hampton Inn & Suites Wilmington Christiana, its fourth property in Delaware along the busy I-95 corridor. The additions round out the previously announced second quarter opening of the Westin Wilmington, DE. All of the hotels are owned by The Buccini/Pollin Group, a privately held, full service, real estate acquisition, development and management company.
"We significantly expanded our infrastructure more than a year ago in anticipation of accommodating rapid growth by a select group of institutional grade investors with whom we work," said Joseph Bojanowski, president of PMHS. "On the new-builds, we directed all construction and pre-opening activities. Operationally, we are seeing very rapid ramp-up as all three hotels are being well received in their respective communities. We have taken over management of the Knoxville hotel seamlessly, which already is benefiting from our proprietary operating and marketing systems."
"PMHS has a proven track record of working with well-respected brands in primary markets and secondary markets with significant barriers to entry to dynamically improve their bottom lines," said Dave Pollin, of The Buccini/Pollin Group. "During the course of our relationship, PMHS has consistently delivered premium performance, including on the bottom line. PMHS is well positioned as a true, national player to help us achieve our ambitious growth objectives. We look forward to expanding our relationship with PMHS as we both continue to grow."
The four new hotels added in the second quarter include:
Homewood Suites New York Midtown Manhattan Times Square South The brand's first entry into Manhattan is located just three blocks from Times Square at 312 West 37thSt. and also is the brand's largest hotel at 293 over-sized suites. Each suite is 25 percent more spacious than the typical Manhattan hotel room. The hotel's unique design includes: a two-story lobby waterfall, a seasonal rooftop deck and garden terrace. The 22-story, all-suite property is owned by West 37th Street Operator LLC, a joint venture between The Buccini/Pollin Group, Albanese Development Corporation and Rockwood Capital.
"This property exceeded occupancy projections in its first week," said Bojanowski. "We created a number of tailored marketing campaigns that are attracting a strong customer base and providing a great return on investment."
Hilton Knoxville Situated in the heart of the business district and within walking distance of the University of Tennessee and the Knoxville Convention Center, the 320-room property was acquired by the The Buccini/Pollin Group. PMHS will oversee a selective renovation to the hotel, which will include public spaces, function rooms and guest rooms.
"The Hilton Knoxville has the premiere location in the city and with the completion of the renovation will be the city's 'newest' hotel," Bojanowski noted. "The renovation will be done in phases to essentially eliminate any guest disruptions."
Hampton Inn & Suites Wilmington Christiana -- The recent opening of the 136-room, Delaware State Green Certified Hotel is the company's second new build to open in Delaware in the second quarter of 2014 and is the first Hampton Inn & Suites in the market.
