Community wants action for crumbling wall

    - July 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    PALMER TWP., Pa. -

Residents of one Palmer Township community want to know who's going to fix a retaining wall that is breaking apart.

Residents of the Villages at Mill Race say the wall started cracking a month ago.

Some pieces have broken off, and the ground around the wall is eroding, but so far residents say no one is taking ownership of the retaining wall including Palmer Township.

Theyve checked with the township engineer which is Pidcock. Pidcock also disavows any knowledge of the walls creation, we checked site plans and development plans and the wall is not there. But as you can see the wall is a physical reality, said Linda Beaumont, a member of the board of directors at the Villages at Mill Race.

Several attempts were made to contact the Palmer Township planning director and the builder of the development. Neither has returned our calls.

    MCI approves MBBS admission

    - July 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Decks have been cleared for admission of MBBS students to the Indira Gandhi Government Medical and Research Institute (IGGMCRI) with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday approving the recommendation of Medical Council of India(MCI) for renewal of approval for fifth batch admission.

In a recent meeting, the MCI decided in favour of IGGMCRI in recommending the college for fifth bath admission.

Last April, the Medical Council of India (MCI) had recommended to the Union government against granting approval to the State-owned IGGMCRI for student admissions. The MCI also cited the inadequate faculty as the main reason. Subsequently the IGGMCRI filled 60 posts of Associate Professor and Assistant Professor and sent a compliance report to the Union of Health Ministry.

While approval was pending with MCI, the Centralised Admission Committee had conducted the medical counselling for seats in IGGMCRI and other self-finance medical colleges.

Dr. Jayakumar, Convener of CENTAC said, Call letters will be despatched to students from tomorrow. Students are advised to approach the corresponding college. Last date for reporting to the college is July 21.

Surgoinsville's Main Street residents have until July 31 to sign up for sewer hookup

    - July 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SURGOINSVILLE Time is running out for Surgoinsville's Main Street sewer customers to sign up for home installation at a discounted rate supplemented with grant funding.

Mayor Johnny Greer said there are still about 30 out of 90 Main Street customers who haven't yet signed up at City Hall for their sewer hook-up.

For those who sign up prior to July 31 the grant subsidized fee is $1,285, which includes everything materials, tank, equipment and installation labor.

The installation cost for those who miss the deadline could be closer to $6,500.

The sewer system hasn't been met with 100 percent approval form the Surgoinsville residents, and the Board of Mayor and Aldermen is anticipating there may be some residents who choose to boycott the sewer system altogether.

Building inspector Vince Pishner noted, however, that if the septic tank ever fails, residences that have available sewer service will not receive a septic repair permit from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

"Right now for the $1,285 hookup fee the town is going to come in and put a new tank in your yard, with pump, and hook it up to your house with the grant," said Mayor Johnny Greer. "All that will be covered, and you won't have to pay a penny to have anything else done. If you don't hook it, and you go past the deadline, and the town has to come back, that deal is gone."

Greer said those who miss the deadline can still buy the tank from the town "at cost" but they'll have pay someone to install the tank and hook up the line, and then still pay the town's $1,285 hookup fee.

F.C. Council OKs Fall Referendum to Fund Mt. Daniel School Expansion

    - July 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By a pair of unanimous votes on successive nights this week, the Falls Church City Council and the Falls Church School Board stepped boldly into the campaign to win voter approval in a November referendum to fund construction of a major expansion and renovation of one of the Citys four schools, the Mt. Daniel Elementary.

Monday the City Council took little time to approve, 7-0, a final reading of a measure to place on the November ballot a public referendum to authorize $15.6 million toward the expansion of the school, which if approved by voters would by the end of October 2016 enjoy an expanded capacity from 275 currently (or 370 counting students currently being taught in temporary trailers) to 500.

According to School Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones, speaking to the City Council Monday night, the new project would relieve pressures on the rest of the system, allowing in particular for second grade students at the now-strapped Thomas Jefferson Elementary to locate at Mt. Daniel.

The $15.6 million price tag on the project will add up to slightly over $1 million a year in debt service, according to Richard LaCondre, the Citys chief financial officer, and $1 million of the funds would be expended in the current fiscal year, followed by $8 million in FY2015 and $6.6 million in FY2016.

While the Council took its move on Monday night, the SchoolBoard followed Tuesday night with a unanimous vote to approve the design plans of the Grunley Construction Company, as presented at a meeting last Thursday of the Architectural Selection Advisory Committee (ASAC) for the schools, preferring them to those submitted by the Hess Company.

As was explained at Tuesdays School Board meeting, the Grunley plan calls for a more complete new construction with access off of Oak Street, while the Hess plan called for keeping key components of the existing building and bringing access off of Highland Avenue.

Grunley was also praised for having a better plan for relocating of students during the construction process.

Superintendent Jones, School Board member John Lawrence and the schools facilities coordinator Steven Padilla attended a meeting with 25 members of the Mt. Daniel Homeowners Association on Monday night, and were happy to report that the reaction from the neighbors to the proposed new construction was very positive, even as concerns for issues such as storm water and parking remain to be resolved to everyones satisfaction.

But constructive discussions on mitigating parking pressures in the neighborhood both during and following construction were held. School Board member Kieran Sharpe hailed the cooperative tone of the meeting with the neighbors, as contrasted with previous experiences when expansion efforts at Mt. Daniel were undertaken.

Dr. Jones told the City Council Monday that the projections for continued robust enrollment growth in the Citys schools ranges out to a 20 year time frame, and that all the capital improvement projects on the drawing boards now, including for a new high school, are being conformed to what projections over that period will involve. It is estimated that the probable life of the newly constructed and reconstructed site will be 50 years.
