CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
During this morning'scontrolled demolitionof the old Innerbelt Bridge, many local roadways were closed but viewers that wanted to get a closer look watched it happen LIVE on19actionnews.comat 6 a.m.

The controlled demolition dropped five of the nine steel spans of the 1959 bridge. The bridge railings, lights, barriers and concrete driving surface were already removed using traditional methods.
The concrete piers will be demolished later this summer.
The plan protected the businesses that operate from the Flats as well as people living and working in the Tremont neighborhood.
When the bridge opened in 1959 it was the widest bridge in Ohio, carrying four lanes in each direction. The bridge carried interstate traffic in both directions and was a classic steel "Pratt Deck Truss" with a cast-in-place concrete deck and steel parapets. It stood 128 feet tall, 116 feet wide and was 5,078 feet long.
ODOTis in the midst of replacing the 55-year old bridge with two new structures one to carry traffic in each direction. The pair have been named in honor of statesman George V. Voinovich. Replacement of the 1959 bridge is vital to the success of moving people in and out of downtown Cleveland now and in the future. It will enhance capacity, bolster our economy and ensure the safety of motorists. The first of the pair is now open and temporarily carrying traffic in both directions until completion of the second new bridge in late 2016.
Demolition began in January 2014 and has been a sequenced activity much like construction, only in reverse. Demolition is expected to be complete by the end of August.
The Innerbelt Bridge closed at midnight Friday and reopened Saturday at 9 a.m.

Demolition of the Comanche Hill and Campus Colony off-campus housing apartment complexes began Monday.
The Comanche Hill apartments on Woods Street and the Campus Colony apartments on Comanche Street are undergoing demolition this summer. One of the buildings in the Comanche Hill complex has already been completely demolished into a big pile of rubble, and theyre going to start hauling off all the debris, said Juan Guerra, associate vice president of Facilities.
And the rest of them, both at Comanche Hill and Colony, are scheduled to come down over the next couple of weeks, Guerra said.
Around 9 a.m. on Monday the apartment buildings began to come down, Guerra said.
It doesnt take much to take these buildings down, he said.
The entire demolition process of scheduled to take six weeks and will include clearing the demolition, putting up erosion control measures and security lighting, Guerra said. The goal is to have demolition completed and cleared by the start of the fall semester.
Part of the apartments existing parking lots will be reopened for students to utilize during the fall semester, he said.
The parking that used to be there for the apartments were not gonna tear up all the asphalt, were going to leave it there so that itll continue to be available for parking but Im not sure what kind of permit you need, Guerra said.
No traffic will be affected by the demolition of the apartment complexes, Guerra said. There are no street closures planned for this project.
What were doing is were clearing the site, getting it ready for the future engineering and science complex, Guerra said. Hopefully well have that funded next year when the legislators are back in session

Doug Immel recently completed his custom-built dream home, sparing no expense on details like cherry-wood floors, cathedral ceilings and stained-glass windows in just 164 square feet of living space including a loft.
The 57-year-old schoolteacher's tiny house near Providence, Rhode Island, cost $28,000 a seventh of the median price of single-family residences in his state.
"I wanted to have an edge against career vagaries," said Immel, a former real estate appraiser. A dwelling with minimal financial burden "gives you a little attitude." He invests the money he would have spent on a mortgage and related costs in a mutual fund, halving his retirement horizon to 10 years and maybe even as soon as three. "I am infinitely happier."
Dramatic downsizing is gaining interest among Americans, gauging by increased sales of plans and ready-made homes and growing audiences for websites related to the niche. A+E Networks has begun airing "Tiny House Nation" a series on FYI that "celebrates the exploding movement."
The pared-down lifestyle allows people to minimize expenses and gain economic freedom, said architect Jay Shafer in Cotati, California, who founded two micro building and design companies and is widely credited with popularizing the trend.
"It shows people how little some need to be happy, and how simply they can live if they choose," said Shafer, 49, who shares a 500-square foot home with his wife and two young children.
Despite gains in the labor and housing markets, Americans choosing mini houses remain wary of tethering themselves to a mortgage.
People want "a more modest lifestyle now," said Derek Diedricksen, who travels nationally to lead building workshops. Those who opt for super-small structures don't want to "waste their time or be a slave to a house they don't fully use."

SO THIS IS a garage, as you can see, says Seattle architect Mark Thomson.
Thomsons not one for self-promotion. The large, white structure at the end of the driveway most certainly contains his car. It is also a studio (upstairs) with space for archival storage (downstairs). But all of that pales in comparison to how it does each of those things. With grace. With dignity. With the finest sense of design.
Im just kind of ripping off Philip Johnson. Theres this little studio Johnson did, Thomson says referring back to his own stark-white stacked boxes topped by a cone of skylight.
Its a wood structure. It shouldnt be a wood structure.
I have a good relationship with my contractor friends.
Everybody who worked on it put in extra effort. Youre only as good as the people who build it.
Thats really how the interview goes. From here. To there. And back. Thomson lives in his head, and the thoughts are flowing.
I think of them as two different things, he says of his chocolate-brown-cedar-sided chalet of a place across the yard (I ripped that off, too, I was in Europe and . . .). But theyre not really that different. The volume of spaces. If they come out of me theyre gonna kinda have my bias.

Allow me. Yes, there is a relation to Johnsons Library/Study on the 47-acre New Canaan, Conn., property that is home to the Glass House. But Thompsons is a new interpretation for an entirely different landscape (even though he will argue its all derivative. Theres nothing original.). And that landscape is? Phinneys a little presumptuous, he says. Put Ballard. Im right in a kind of a sweet spot. Put Interbay. Oh, Phinneys fine. There. At the end of a nothing-unusual residential block, up against a steep hillside embedded with side streets.
