AAP Qantas is cutting 167 jobs from its engineering division as it continues its cost-cutting program.
Qantas is cutting 167 jobs from its engineering division as part of the embattled airline's ongoing turnaround plan.
Workers affected by the cuts are based in Sydney and Melbourne and are a mixture of engineers and back office staff.
The cuts are part of 5000 jobs the airline announced in February it was shedding as part of a $2 billion cost-cutting program over three years.
At the time, Qantas flagged it would make more changes to its engineering division to reflect its reduced workload.
Qantas Domestic chief executive Lyell Strambi said the airline did not need as many engineering staff as it was retiring older aircraft and buying new planes requiring less maintenance.
"While any job loss is regrettable, we have worked with our employees and unions over the past five months to reduce the number of compulsory retrenchments through voluntary redundancies, job swaps and redeployment - and we will continue to do so where practical," he said in a statement on Tuesday.
"We are working with our employees throughout this difficult time and will be providing as much support as we can, through career transition services and employee assistance programs.
"People will be provided with generous redundancy packages."
Qantas has so far shed 2200 jobs, including catering, freight and air and ground crew positions.

Qantas sheds 167 engineering jobs
PORTVILLE The Portville Historical and Preservation Society will hold dedication ceremonies for its restored one-room schoolhouse at Bedford Corners at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 13.
The event, which is open to the public, will include dedication of a flag pole and brick walkway donated by members of the Portville Central School Class of 1959 (see related story) and a talk by two former students of the one-room schoolhouse.
In addition, state Sen. Catharine Young (R-Olean), who helped secure a $15,000 grant for the restoration effort, will attend the event.
Bedford Corners, land named for its Civil War-era owner, is located at the intersection of Route 305, Deer Creek and Dodge Creek roads, 1 miles north of the village of Portville.
The one-room school, built in 1864, is one of three historic buildings that make up the Bedford Corners Historic District, property deeded to the Portville Historical and Preservation Society by the late Col. Charles Eshelman, whose family had owned the land for decades. A Harvard graduate and career Army officer, Col. Eshelman was a longtime trustee of the local preservation group.
Restoration of all three buildings, the school, the former Eshelman home and a former cheese factory, each occupying separate corner lots at the intersection, is underway. Together, they will become a museum of local history.
The first project to reach completion, the one-room schoolhouse, has been a labor of love, said Cindy Keeley, president of the Historical and Preservation Society.
The building has been completely restored inside and out, she said. It has a new roof, a new heating system, new wiring, the foundation has been repaired, and its bell tower, removed in the 1920s, has been recreated. Even the old pot-bellied stove that once warmed the feet of students and their teacher has been restored.
It will be a cultural and educational center, a place where children can learn about education through the ages, said Ms. Keeley, adding the building will be ready for visits when a new school year starts in September.
The building is one of 10 former one-room schoolhouses that once operated in the town of Portville, she said. They became obsolete in the centralized school movement that followed World War II.

Featured panelists include stars Josh Hartnett, Reeve Carney and Harry Treadaway and creator/writer/executive producer John Logan. Aisha Tyler will moderate.
Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox TV made the announcement this morning in addition to the Comic-Con return ofJack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) to celebrate the DVD/Blu-ray release of24: Live Another Day on July 24 from 10-11 AM in Ballroom 20. Joining Sutherland for a retrospective on the show and clips will be shows EP Jon Cassar. Comic-Con Update: Penny Dreadful, American Horror Story To Make Debuts, 20th TV & FX Panels Announced
NASHUA New Hampshires first Noodles & Company restaurant will open its doors next week in the Gate City.
The restaurant, which serves noodle and pasta dishes from around the world, will celebrate its grand opening on July 16 at the Daniel Webster Shops, 219 Daniel Webster Highway.
This is a brand new development with great visibility. It is just a great location, said Eve Metheny, director of brand marketing for Hamra Enterprises, a Noodles & Company franchisee.
The casual restaurant serves fresh, globally inspired dishes that are cooked to order with quality ingredients, according to Metheny, who said the company stresses fresh food that is made fast.
The Nashua site will be Noodles & Companys third restaurant in New England, and the first in the Granite State. The restaurant will seat about 75 patrons inside, and also offer outdoor seating for about 16 customers.
Daniel Webster Shops has been under construction for several months. Linear Retail Properties LLC, a Massachusetts developer, previously acquired the parcel at 219 Daniel Webster Highway, which was formerly owned by Cumberland Farms, Inc., for $1.45 million.
The old structure was razed and a new, 12,000-square-feet retail property was constructed. In addition to Noodles & Company, it will also house b.good restaurant, which has several facilities in Massachusetts and features burgers, sandwiches, salads and shakes.
Noodles & Company will have its grand opening from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on July 16. A soft, private opening will take place on July 15 during a benefit event for the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter.
Noodles & Company will donate 100 percent of proceeds from the day to the organization, who will in turn use these funds to provide food, shelter and services to the individuals and families they serve, said a release.
Noodles & Company, based out of Colorado, has about 380 restaurants across the country, with nearly 30 new locations in the works.
