The young plumber felt his flesh burning.

Justin Daniels walked past several windows, but he didnt look into any of them. Just knowing the skin on his face was charred was bad enough. He didnt want to see it.

He moved quickly with his arms held out in front of him. Puffy blisters started to form on his limbs. He didnt want to cause more pain by bumping his arms into a wall.

Justin reached the exit of Meadow Wind Assisted Living center, where he had been working on a natural gas line, and climbed into an ambulance waiting for him.

Medics cut off the plumbers clothing and poured saline onto his skin to cool him. The liquid was a cold relief.

Four weeks after the June 6 accident, Justin is on his way to a full recovery from second-degree burns on his arms, neck and face. Only the remnants of a burn on the right side of his neck are visible. He keeps his burnt arms covered in gauze.

Fire investigators, meanwhile, are still looking for the cause of the flash fire that injured the man with 10 years experience in plumbing.

I thought I was going to look rough, Justin said. The healing process has just blown me away. I look in the mirror and smile.

An Accra Circuit Court on Monday granted bail to Robert Kofi Amooh, a plumber, in the sum of GH15,000 with two sureties. The accused person, who pleaded not guilty, has been in prison custody for the past three years for unlawful entry and robbery.

The accused was last produced in court in 2012. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Patrick Morkeh told the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri that the prosecution was still waiting for advice from the Attorney Generals Department. The Judge said he was not enthused about some of these human right abuses that would turn out to be a judgement debt against the state.

He said under the 1992 Constitution, the accused person is innocent until proven guilty of the offence. Mr Obiri said the investigator was not even in court to talk about the steps he had taken so far considering the case. I have also observed that the complainant is unwilling to come to court, he added. The Presiding judge said if in the next adjourned date, the prosecution does not start the case, he would discharge the accused person.

DSP Morkeh said the complainant in the case was an immigration officer, while the accused person lives at Circle Odawna. He said on February 28, 2011, at about 0100 hours when the complainant was sleeping, the accused person scaled a wall at the SNNIT flat block at Dansoman, where the complainant lives and entered his room on the third floor.

The prosecution alleged that the accused person stole the complainants wallet containing GH135, two mobile phones valued at GH575 and three watches valued at GH610. He said when the accused person wanted to come out of the room through the main door, the complainant spotted him. He said the accused person then pulled out a blade from his pocket and threatened to harm the complainant, if he shouts.

DSP Morkeh said the complainant attempted to apprehend the accused person but he (Robert) cut the complainant with the blade on his arm, stomach and the face. He said the accused person then struggled with the complainant and in the process; the accused person fell from the third floor to the ground floor of the building.

The matter was reported and the accused person was arrested after investigation. The case is adjourned to July 21.

This is the time of year when pesticides get sprayed on lawns, parks and golf courses. Though the goal may be to make these green spaces more pleasant places to play fewer bugs, fewer weeds these treatments may not be as safe as you assume.

Most people are not aware of the hazards that the unthinking use of pesticides poses to their children, says Philip Landrigan, dean for global health and a professor of pediatrics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Pesticides include herbicides to kill weeds and insecticides such as those sprayed to manage cockroaches and other pests.

Pound for pound, children receive much higher exposures to these chemicals than adults do, just through normal daily activity, Landrigan says. Because children are growing quickly, they take into their bodies more of the pesticides that are in the food, water and air, he says. They also roll around in the grass and put their fingers in their mouths, which greatly increases exposure.

Researchers are learning a great deal about how vulnerable childrens brains are to pesticides during fetal and early childhood development. These delicate developmental processes are easily disrupted by very small doses of toxic chemicals that would be virtually harmless for an adult, Landrigan says.

States and local jurisdictions play a major role in regulating the use of chemicals on lawns. The active ingredient most widely used on residential lawns in the United States is a chemical mixture called 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, or 2,4-D, which is sold in differing formulations under a variety of trade names. Another common herbicide is glyphosate. Studies of occupational exposure to agricultural pesticides (including 2,4-D and glyphosate) have found a positive correlation with certain cancers.

The Environmental Protection Agency approves pesticides based on their intended use, but there are many uncertainties regarding how much exposure is safe and how mixtures of chemicals act together, says Gary Ginsberg, a public health toxicologist and an assistant clinical professor at the University of Connecticut. Many states and counties require that signs be placed on turf that has been treated. Maryland, for instance, requires commercial applicators to post signs following the spraying of pesticides on lawns and other landscapes but does not require homeowners to do the same.

Unfortunately, flags generally do not give people adequate warning, says Ginsberg, author of Whats Toxic, Whats Not. And many people ignore them, he says.

Whats more, there is no scientific standard for how long one should stay off a lawn after it is treated. Many companies that use these chemicals warn that people should stay away from sprayed surfaces for six to 24 hours. Yet a 2013 study examining the levels of lawn pesticides in the urine of dogs found that herbicides persisted on lawn surfaces for at least 48 hours after spraying. If youre trying to get rid of the bulk of the exposure, you want to be off of [a treated area] for at least two days, and I would say more like three, Ginsberg says.

It is not just direct exposure to sprayed areas that presents a concern. Theres some inevitable transfer into the home or the neighbors home from the use on the lawn, Ginsberg says. Some pesticides waft in through vents and windows during and after spraying; people and dogs also track residue inside. A 2001 study found that a week after lawn treatment, 2,4-D could be detected on all indoor air surfaces, including tabletops and windowsills. The team estimated that indoor exposure to 2,4-D for young children was about 10 times higher during the week after lawn application than it was in the week before the lawn was treated.

What to know before you spray your lawn with pesticides

A Mount Holly man is dead after a lawn mower crash Wednesday.

On Monday, Vermont State police said 54 year-old George Lynn, of Mt. Holly, Vermont, died from injuries sustained in a lawn mower crash July 2, 2014

Vermont State police in Rutland said Lynn died of his injuries at 1:45 p.m on July 4, at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington.

Lynn is Formerly from Bristol, Connecticut.

Police said in a press release that just after 1 p.m. on Wednesday July 2, troopers from the Rutland Barracks responded to a lawn mower crash on Bowlsville Road North in the Town of Mount Holly. Investigation revealed that Lynn was traveling east on his John Deere lawn mower when he drove off the roadway and crashed down a small embankment. As a result of the crash, Lynn sustained serious injuries and was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The crash remains under investigation.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by members from Mount Holly Rescue, Mount Holly Fire Department and Rutland Regional Ambulance Service.

The red zone. Its only 20 yards, but a distance which glues people to their high-def televisions. Heck, a channel pays homage to the landscape. When an offense resides inside their opponent's 20-yard line, youll quickly reference your fantasy team(s) to see which player to pull for when a touchdown looms.

The word target is popular term tossed around the fantasy football world, too. Its easy to review who racked up the most receptions, but its going beyond the box score to dissect how many times the quarterback threw to a certain player.

When you combine the two expressions, red zone targets, the metric can provide loads of fantasy-relevant information before the season heats up.

The cream obviously rises to the top in these scenarios. Out of all the wide receivers, Calvin Johnson led the way with 26 targets inside the red zone, which was 30.2 percent of the Lions RZT (red zone targets). Wes Welker was second to Megatron with 24 RTZ (26.1 percent of Denvers RZT). The big name that has fallen in the receiver rankings this year, Larry Fitzgerald, was fourth with 22 RZT (40 percent of Carson Palmers red zone passes).

Much like the WRs, the tight end position is one where there is no surprise at the top: Jimmy Graham. The Saints tight end recorded 24 RZT (39.3 percent of Brees RZT). Second among TEs, Vernon Davis, had 19 RZT. Jordan Cameron tied Davis, but Cameron had a disadvantage of three different quarterbacks passing to him throughout the season. The next two names may surprise you. Greg Olsen of the Panthers and Delanie Walker of the Titans tallied 17 RZT.

Looking back at 2012 numbers and projecting 2013 success, Eric Decker had the most red zone targets with 25 looks from Peyton Manning. The following season, Decker finished with 23 RZT, the third-most in the NFL. However, this year, I would expect a significant drop in the rankings for Decker with the combination of Geno Smith and Mike Vick throwing him passes for the Jets.

Reliability becomes a large factor for the amount of red zone targets a player receives. Much like a crucial third or fourth down conversion, the quarterback will want a sure-handed teammate in a situation where every play could determine the final outcome. So, it shouldnt surprise you to find receivers like A.J. Green, Brandon Marshall, and Fitzgerald on the top of RZT lists.

As for the 2012 red zone target stats, four of the wide receivers in the top five RZT category concluded 2013 in the top 10 for receiving touchdowns. Looking forward, that would mean that Calvin Johnson, Wes Welker, Larry Fitzgerald, A.J. Green, and Dez Bryant should produce double-digit TDs. Though that conclusion wont shock many, players like Julian Edelman and Keenan Allen are just a couple names among the top 10 RZT from 2013 to keep an eye on for this fantasy football season.

One other name that stood out among wide receivers from the 2013 RZT rankings was Cecil Shorts. In just 13 starts with the Jaguars, Shorts was targeted 16 times inside the 20-yard line and 11 times inside the 10, last season. With Justin Blackmon suspended, again, Shorts is the top receiver on Jacksonvilles depth chart. Shorts average draft position of 77.5 a year ago should definitely rise in 2014.

2014 Fantasy Football: Red Zone Targets Statistical Trends

For years, Beth McGuinn picked up fresh vegetables and produce from the Dimond Hill Farm in Concord during her commute to work.

At the farm last week, she wore a pair of hiking boots and examined a trail map outlining the 7-mile mile path winding from Dimond Hill, through Rossview Farm, to Carter Hill Orchard.

Its really doable, she said, looking at the wooden trail sign erected beside the farmstand.

Over the past several years, the Five Rivers Conservation Trust has preserved Carter Hill Orchard and Dimond Hill Farm under conservation easements, which protects the land from development, opens up trails for public use and maintains the farmland where local agriculture can flourish for decades to come, McGuinn said.

Its a community farm. People know Dimond Hill, she said. It is available to be a farm forever. Its really special.

McGuinn is now at the helm of the Concord-based conservation organization as its first-ever full-time executive director. She takes over at a time when the nonprofit has grown at a rapid pace: over the past four years, Five Rivers has nearly doubled its number of property easements, from 36 to 61.

With extensive experience in forestry and land conservation, McGuinn hopes to expand on Five Riverss success conserving open land in the Concord area, keeping a special eye on farms.

she said. We have seen an increase in interest in local foods and its really important to be able to source at least some of your food locally.

Five Rivers Conservation Trust launched in 1998 as the Concord Conservation Trust, but in 2002 changed its name and expanded its mission. Five Rivers refers to the nonprofits geographic focus, between the Merrimack, Contoocook, Blackwater, Warner and Soucook Rivers, including Concord, Hopkinton, Bow, Hillsboro, Dunbarton and 10 more towns.

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Security and uniformed bodies under the Defence and Home ministries may be holding their training exercises in forests to curb encroachment and illegal land clearing activities.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri G. Palanivel said he would discuss such a proposal with his counterparts in both the ministries Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

I believe that with the presence of the army, police or Rela, it can put off would-be trespassers in the forest, he told reporters after visiting the Kampung Raja-Blue Valley border yesterday.

Palanivel had visited the area to check on recent land clearing activity there.

Speaking on behalf of some 100 farm owners, Chong Chan Kong, 33, said land clearing along the Kampung Raja-Blue Valley range occurred last Friday.

The activities have started much earlier since September last year. It stopped for about two months and then resumed again. In March, the forest was set on fire, he said.

New proposal to curb illegal land clearing

The Penang Municipality and the relevant authorities must investigate the on- going clearing of Bukit Kukus to avoid another 1997 landslide mishap.

GEORGE TOWN: DAPs Tanjung Bungah state representative Teh Yee Cheu called on the authorities to investigate the possible illegal hill land clearing in Paya Terubong, Air Itam.

During his visit to the area yesterday, Teh said he saw extensive land clearing being carried out atop Bukit Kukus, causing soil erosion to the nearby hilltop of Bukit Penara.

Bukit Kukus is located at least 1,200 feet above sea level.

Teh said he saw Bukit Kukus hilltop being flattened, trees being chopped down, cleared and thrown down the hill slope.

He has collected evidence, including photographs, to show that heavy earthwork vehicles, bulldozers and lorries without road tax and number plates that are being used to clear and transport soil from the hill out of the vicinity.

He cautioned of more soil erosion taking place during heavy rain.

Teh said that he had asked the local municipality, the MPPP, about a fortnight ago, about the matter and had tried to get more information but till today he has not received a response.

He urged the relevant authorities like MPPP, Departments of Environment, Drainage and Irrigation, Forestry and the Northeast District Land Office to probe into the matter soon as he believes the hill clearing was being done without proper approval.
