Florida firm to design new market

    - July 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Florida-based Zyscovich Architects has been retained by the Tobago House of Assembly to provide the master plan and design for the new farmers market in Scarborough.

Zyscovich also is preparing the master plan for design of an aquatic center and gymnasium adjacent to the Dwight Yorke Stadium to create a state-of-the-art sports complex, according to a media release and photographs e-mailed to the Tobago News from the company in Miami last week. The market will be situated on a prominent Scarborough site that serves as the gateway to neighbouring cultural and community services, including the Shaw Park Cultural Complex, Scarborough Secondary School and the Tennis Center. In addition to developing an overall master plan for the market, Zyscovich Architects will design a cultural plaza that is open to community use and a mixed-use building that encompasses both offices and concessions. "The placement of the building and its architecture must come together to reinforce the farmers market's stature as the gateway to its neighboring amenities while also creating a marketplace environment that is practical as well as efficient," said Vice President and Principal Jose Murguido. The new farmers market was expected to become a major Scarborough shopping destination, necessitating that traffic and access were primary considerations during the master planning process. The release said the Zyscovich team intended to focus significant attention on the entry plaza at Milford Bypass and Orange Hill to ensure all forms of traffic can be accommodated, including cars, taxis, buses, truck and other commercial vehicles, along with pedestrians. "The building's curved design along its corner location intentionally bifurcates the site and minimises cross traffic between pedestrian and vehicular lanes, enhancing safety and establishing efficient flow patterns," Murguido noted. He added that the main pedestrian market entrance also will be located at the entry plaza to allow easy public access to the building and provide a spacious area where people can gather for cultural activities. Established in 1977, Zyscovich Architects is a nationally renowned integrated urban design, architecture and interior design firm headquartered in downtown Miami with additional locations in West Palm Beach, Orlando, New York City, Bogot and Tobago. The firm is widely recognised as a leader in the design of urban projects as well as development of the urban design methodology entitled Real Urbanismsm. The release said Zyscovich was committed to improving neighborhoods by emphasising sustainable development and economic vitality based on their character and history and the firm's imprint is evident in its full range of projects, from master plans, urban studies and mixed-use urban infill, to transportation design and a wide variety of educational facilities. Additional information on Zyscovich Architects and its diverse project expertise can be obtained on its website at http://www.zyscovich.com.

Glazers sell landmarked home on Middle Road for $12.6M

    - July 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Avram Avie Glazer and his wife, Jill, have sold their landmarked house at 5 Middle Road in the Estate Section for a recorded $12.6 million, according to a deed recorded Thursday.

Mary Jordan and Thomas A. Saunders III of New York bought the four-bedroom, Colonial Revival-style house. Hes a philanthropist and investment banker who spent much of his career at Morgan Stanley before starting his own private investment firm. He also is chairman of The Heritage Foundation think tank in Washington, D.C.

The Glazers paid $7.4 million for the house in 2004 and carried out a major restoration, property records show.

Avie Glazer son of the late billionaire businessman Malcolm Glazer is part of the family that holds controlling stakes in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football franchise and Englands Manchester United soccer team. Several Glazer family members have bought and sold property on the island, including Malcolm Glazer, who with his wife, Linda, were longtime residents of South Ocean Boulevard when he died May 28.

Designed by noted society architect Marion Sims Wyeth in 1935, the house on Middle Road had been listed for sale at $15 million in January by broker Lawrence Moens of Lawrence A. Moens Associates.

Agent Cristina Condon of Sothebys International Realty acted on behalf of the buyers. She declined to comment, and Moens is on vacation and couldnt be reached.

    Thorough restoration

With 13,696 square feet of living space, inside and out, the house stands on a lushly landscaped lot measuring nearly an acre at the corner of Gulfstream and Middle roads, two blocks south of Worth Avenue. Several of the rooms overlook a secluded pool area, according to Moens sales listing.

We are absolutely thrilled to come to Palm Beach, Jordan Saunders said, speaking from her home in Locust Valley, N.Y. I walked into the door of that house, and my heart melted. It is such a gem.

The houses original owner was Joseph M. Cudahy, president of Sinclair Refining Co., who, with his family, used it on vacations from their home in Chicago. Wyeth adorned the facade with quoins at the corners, bay windows and a traditionally styled front porch. The town granted the house landmark-protection status in 1990.

Bucks County home of Pearl S. Buck will inspire those who visit | PHOTOS

    - July 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tour Pearl S. Buck's home in Bucks County and you'll feel as if you've discovered a treasure as prized as an oyster's pearl.

Layer after layer of Buck's story will peel away and inspire you as you go room to room, walk the grounds and visit her grave. A best-selling author, Buck was the first American woman to win both the Nobel and Pulitzer prizes for literature. But her work went far beyond the printed page.

Buck counseled presidents, mothered a brood of children (one birth child, seven adopted children and at least 10 foster children), changed the lives of thousands more children and fought for racial harmony through cultural understanding. The daughter of missionaries, she used her vast knowledge of China, where she lived for 40 years, to bridge major gaps in understanding between the East and the West.

Beloved and admired, she also accepted keys to more than 30 cities, collected 13 honorary degrees and was featured on a postage stamp. She deserves as much admiration as other Bucks County luminaries, including Henry Chapman Mercer, James A. Michener and David Burpee.

"We worry young people will not know who she is because 'The Good Earth' is gone from most school reading lists," says Janet Mintzer, CEO of Pearl S. Buck International, referring to Buck's famous novel about the lives of a Chinese peasant family. Buck, who died in 1973, was born in West Virginia 122 years ago, grew up in China and lived for nearly 40 years at Green Hills Farm in Hilltown Township near Perkasie.

To keep her memory alive, Pearl Buck International not only keeps up her home, but also offers a teen leadership program and summer culture camps for children. It also continues Buck's legacy of finding loving homes for children who need them via its Welcome House program and providing still more children and their families with health care, education and support through its Opportunity House.

Pearl Buck's house, itself, also was endangered, in disrepair and needing major work despite being one of only a few National Historic Sites focusing on a woman and even fewer containing an intact collection of her belongings.

But times are looking up for Buck and her home. A new and previously unpublished manuscript has been discovered and published as "Eternal Wonder," stirring new interest in the author. The home was removed from a list of Pennsylvania's 10 most endangered historic houses and reopened in 2013, after eight years of extensive repairs and restoration.

Today, the 1825 stone farmhouse and surrounding 60 acres play a major role in telling Buck's story and continuing her legacy. Buck and her second husband, Richard Walsh, made major changes in the home to accommodate their large family and provide office space. But it never lost the appeal that made Buck fall in love with it the first time she saw it.

But how and why did Buck find her way to Bucks County?

Kentucky 136-East to close near Niagara School

    - July 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to close a section of Kentucky 136-East between Anthoston and Niagara for several months starting Monday for a bridge replacement.

Kentucky 136-East is scheduled to close at mile point 24.6 to allow construction of a new bridge over the East Fork of Canoe Creek.

The closure will be between Kentucky 520 and Kentucky 416-East near Niagara Elementary School.

There will be a marked detour for light vehicles using Kentucky 416-East and Kentucky 520, as well as a posted truck detour using Kentucky 416-East and U.S. 41-South.

Kentucky 136 was originally scheduled to close earlier in the year. However, during preparation work for construction, the contractor found an underground cable near the work site that had to be moved before work could begin. During that utility relocation work the roadway has remained open.

Cambry Contracting is the prime contractor on this $644,680 bridge replacement project. Construction of the new bridge is expected to take about six months to complete, weather permitting.

BJP lawmakers detained on way to tense Moradabad

    - July 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) Three bharatiya janata party (bjp) members of parliament (mp) and a legislator were on friday detained by police as they were trying to head to a village in uttar pradeshs moradabad district where communal tension is at a peak an official said.

police detained amroha mp kanwar singh tanwar rampur mp nepal singh and sambhal mp satyal saini along with sardhana legislator sangeet som as a preventive measure a state home department official here said.

the bharatiya janata party leaders were trying to go to kanth village to hold a maha panchayat (large assembly of people) which has already been banned by the state government. tensions had escalated in kanth after members of two communities on june 27 clashed over installation of loudspeakers at a religious place. the loudspeakers were subsequently removed by the administration acting on complaints by the other community.

the akhilesh yadav government had banned the meeting and had ordered the district administration to take all necessary and prohibitory measures to contain spread of communal tensions. siding with the aggrieved community the bjp had announced holding of the maha panchayat on july 4 which led to the akhilesh yadav government deploying heavy police force in the region to prevent any trouble.

assailing the move bjp state president laxmikant bajpayi who took over the protests a few days back alleged that the state government and the district administration were out to appease a certain community.

as the two proposals submitted by the party had been denied they were now headed for more intense protests he added. bjp state unit spokesman vijay bahadur pathak said: this government cannot be allowed to go all out to appease one community and trample upon the feelings of others.

he further alleged that yet again like in muzaffarnagar the state government had failed to sort out a minor issue and had allowed it to spin out of control a result of which is the public anger in the region. congress legislature party (clp) leader in the state assembly pradip mathur however alleged that the bjp was trying to foment trouble in the state with an eye to the 2017 state assembly elections.

they have to be stopped at all cost specially to protect the secular fabric of the state he added.

this cat and mouse game has been going on for long and was at play during the lok sabha elections... if the state government was serious about secularism they should act tough against the bjp and its leaders said the bahujan samaj party leader.
