Construction crews are building the new Nye County Information Technology (I.T.) building behind the sheriffs department at 1520 E. Basin Ave., as the ambitious, county building program nears an end.
Nye County commissioners authorized $700,000 for the building in February 2013. Pac-Van was awarded a $664,151 contract to build the I.T. structure, which will be a 3,415-square-foot modular building with space for a computer server room, work room and office space.
It will also have a dedicated backup generator and backup heating and air-conditioning unit. The county is taking leftover funds from the $25.5 million in bonds used to construct the new Pahrump jail.
The county I.T. directors office building was displaced when the new jail was constructed at the Ian Deutch Government Complex. The county has been paying $1,000 per month to house the five I.T. department employees in office space at a strip mall on East Basin Avenue.
Once it is completed, computer servers in Tonopah will be brought to Pahrump. The building will have a stucco and stone exterior finish.
The I.T. building project was funded at the same time as $850,000 for the One Stop Shop modular buildings that will house the planning, public works and building and safety departments on the Calvada Eye.
Those modulars, however, are still standing after Pac-Van received the $195,375 contract to set the buildings in June 2013. County Manager Pam Webster said the county will be awarding a contract soon to design the One Stop Shop.
The One Stop Shop buildings were acquired at an auction from the Yucca Mountain project. Plans havent been announced for the old planning department complex at 250 N. Highway 160.
County Manager Pam Webster has talked about putting it up for sale. Commissioner Butch Borasky suggested asking the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to locate their Pahrump Field Office there instead of in Las Vegas.
County officials said they didnt have to seek competitive bids in awarding the I.T. building contract to Pac-Van, a vendor listed with the federal governments General Services Administration. Pac-Van has received numerous county contracts; they were awarded a $1.4 million contract in August 2009 to build the 11,000-square-foot county administration building.

Your roof is beyond a doubt the most important element of protecting your home from the elements. A leaking roof can easily cause hundreds or thousands of dollars in damage if it isnt dealt with quickly. If your roof isnt properly equipped to deal with all that Mother Nature can dish out, you are risking serious damage to your home and belongings.
While leaks are a common symptom that can be caused by a number of roof problems, they arent the only sign of a damaged roof. If you notice that your heating and cooling bills are climbing higher, that may be a sign of a damaged roof. The roof keeps warm air in the winter and keeps it out in the summer, so damage to the roof might cause such fluctuations. If youre seeing any of these signs, it may time for roof replacement.
A good roof should last you for at least a decade, if not two. Unfortunately, many contractors arent as careful as they should be, and in some cases roofs installed by inexperienced or low-end contractors can fail in as little as 5 years. If you have to get your roof replaced, either because it has reached the end of its life or because of poor installation, you should make sure to choose the right contractor. You can count on the expert roofers from Maggio Roofing to replace your leaky or otherwise damaged roof with a high quality, long lasting roof.
One of the advantages of roof replacement is that you can change the material composition of your roof. If you bought your current home, you likely didnt have a say in how the roof was built in the first place. There are pros and cons to each sort of roof type, as well as different looks for each type. If youre interested in trying a metal roof or clay roof, or even installing a skylight for example, a roof replacement is a good time to make the change.
Roof replacement isnt a small investment, but it is often a necessary one to protect your home from the ravages of wind and rain damage. Keep in mind that a roof is a long-term investment. With proper care, your new roof can last a good 20-30 years or possibly even longer.

July 7 deadline By MARLA K. KUHLMAN Tuesday July 1, 2014 10:48 PM
The Gahanna-Jefferson Board of Education met into the late hours of June 25, debating over what might be the best option for a November ballot measure.
The board faces a July 7 deadline to file a resolution with the Franklin County Board of Elections if it wants to proceed with a bond issue to construct one new building, district treasurer Julio Valladares said. If the board wants to proceed with a permanent-improvements levy, the deadline is Aug. 6.
Valladares said the resolution due July 7 wouldn't commit the board to going on the ballot, but it would leave the option open.
Based on the findings of SHP Leading Design, a firm that was hired in February to establish a five-year capital-improvements plan at a cost not to exceed $10,000, the total over the next five years to just upgrade and remodel all buildings would be about $26 million.
Superintendent Francis Scruci said building needs include such items as HVAC, lighting and windows.
The board is considering a permanent-improvements levy or combination bond and permanent-improvements levy.
Board president Jill Schuler said no permanent-improvements levy would get the district a building.
"In addition to a PI, we have to entertain a bond," she said. "I think we're charged with looking further down the line than just this issue. We need to consider the message, the needs that exist and how we could pay for them."
Board member Matt Campbell asked if Lincoln Elementary School would have to be replaced in any long-term plan if the board waited a year to put together a comprehensive plan.

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) Long Beach residents are stumped and upset as hundreds of trees in the oceanfront town have come down.
Chainsaws roared through historic sycamores on Tuesday, but as CBS 2s Carolyn Gusoff reported, residents say many of the trees appeared to be healthy.
Its the loss of not having a beautiful tree lined street. These trees were over a hundred years old, Fred Rondina said.
Residents said that even living trees that appeared to survive Superstorm Sandy are being axed. Once shady streets are now lined with wood chips.
Some of the ones on this block are clearly blooming and just need a couple of branches pruned, and thats it, Ann Marie Klosky said.
Long Beach officials said the trees were inundated with salt water during Sandy, and now pose a safety hazard.
A tree could fall and could hit a pedestrian or traffic. It can be catastrophic, said Joseph Febrixio, Long Beach Deputy Commissioner of Public Works.
The city said that every tree was inspected by arborists with no financial motive.

They are called excavator mulchers. That's polite. What they really do is swallow trees. This one, a DAH Forestry Mulcher from Quebec's manufacturer Denis Cimaf, consumes a 30-foot-tall, mature spruce (starting at the top, landing at the bottom) in 15 seconds. The tree that was, suddenly isn't.
I know, I know; these are incredible machines. They can eat from the top down or topple trees and swallow sideways. They can prune, mulch, make thickets disappear in no time. They can carve ski trails, do road repair, help landscapers, speed up construction. They are crazy fast.
That's their best feature. They are so much faster than the moss that gathers on dying trees, than the woodpeckers, owls and chickadees that sculpt homes in old tree stumps. These high-performance brush cutters are built for busy humans. Of course birds, fungi, slugs, snails, millipedes need to stay busy, too. They need trees to pull apart.
Which is why I'd like to propose a new machine: What if the engineers at Denis Cimaf created a Giant Tree Plucker, one that yanks trees whole from the ground and deposits them in a clearing, set aside for forest critters? Call it a Banquet Center For Beetles, an All-You-Can-Eat Zone that essentially says, thanks for the soil, thanks for the leaf removal, thanks for everything. Since we just built a fairway for a ninth hole, we thought we'd leave a little something for you.
Pipe dream? Maybe. But I bet there are engineers at Denis Cimaf who every so often like to see a woodpecker peeking out of its tree hole, or a soft pad of moss turning gold in the rain.
Thanks to Jason Kottke of kottke.org for introducing me to high-performance, industrial brush cutters.

Windows 8's tile interface is fine on mobile devices, but Microsoft may have just figured out it's terrible for traditional computers.
If recently published reports are to be believed, Microsoft is finally realizing something I've been saying ever since Windows 8 first reared its ugly head: the so-called Modern (formerly Metro) tile interface may work fine on smartphones and tablets, but it basically throws traditional computers under the bus. The Windows 8 start screen is just plain silly on traditional computers.
The situation gets worse the larger the screen of the device in question. Ever look at Windows 8 on a 27-inch monitor? What about on a pair of big-screen monitors? Despite features that let you organize the tiles, the bottom line is that the bigger the screen, the more Windows 8 turns it into a jumbled, confusing mess.
Word is that next year's Windows will present a traditional, Windows 7-style desktop interface on traditional desktops and laptops, while still showing those tiles on smaller, touch-screen devices.
Thank heavens!
Horrendous failure?
On the one hand, this could be seen as a horrendous admission of failure for Microsoft. It bet the company on Windows 8's radical new interface, hiding the traditional desktop and start menu behind a wall of cryptic touch-centric tiles that may have seemed "modern" but never made sense for traditional computing tasks. Making computer users pretend they're working on a tablet raised the ire of rabid commentators and scared off traditional consumers ever since.
Competitors like Apple and Google, meanwhile, offer separate operating systems and interfaces for computers vs. phones and tablets. They, like almost everyone outside of Redmond, seemed to understand that while smartphones and tablets are technically computers, people use them in very different ways for very different tasks. If I'm sitting at my desk working, I have completely different needs than when I'm checking my Facebook feed on my phone or watching a video on my tablet.
While Apple's Mac OS X and iOS are getting more similar all the time (as are Google's Android and Chrome), they still look and feel very different from each other. Which is a good thing.
Promising sign of humility?
