Accidental fire destroys two boats in Milton

    - July 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MILTON Fire chief Nick Marique said improperly disposed fiberglass shavings and remnants started a fire at a local boat making company Monday night that destroyed a pair of boats.

Police, firefighters and emergency personnel responded at 11:36 p.m. after a fire alarm sounded at 11 Industrial Way home of Eastern Boats.

Marique said Deputy Fire Chief Jake Bourdeau who also works at Eastern Boats sounded a first alarm after smelling smoke at the facility. Due to the size and nature of the facility, he added it was upgraded to a second alarm to bring in additional manpower.

After the fire was stalled by the sprinkler system, Marique said firefighters were able to extinguish the remaining flames with a single hose. As a result, he added the second alarm was canceled and Somersworth firefighters were sent home.

Marique said local firefighters were assisted by counterparts from Farmington, Middleton, Rochester and Wakefield. He added paramedics from Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester also responded to the scene while firefighters from Lebanon, Maine, provided station coverage.

Marique said firefighters completed their investigation early Tuesday morning.

The cause is believed to be improperly disposed of industrial materials, Marique said, adding the owners have had this issue with fiberglass shavings before and plan to re-address it.

Bob Bourdeau, owner of Eastern Boats, said he arrived at the business just before firefighters arrived. He added the fire occurred in a large, enclosed work area separate from the rest of the business.

Eastern Boats, which has three buildings, has more than 30,000 square-feet of work space, which includes designated areas for fiberglass, assembly and rigging operations, according to the companys website.

Bourdeau said the separate layout was done by design, for safety purposes. He added the sprinkler system was able to prevent the fire from spreading further.

Former Peconic Baykeeper Launches New Group

    - July 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Kevin McAllister, who had served as the Peconic Baykeeper for 16 years prior to being terminated from his environmental advocacy position this past spring, is now moving forward with a new project.

Defend H2O, the nonprofit started by Mr. McAllister and two other local water advocatesGeorge Skip Tollefsen of Hampton Bays and Mike Bottini of East Hampton, the latter of whom is also an outdoors columnist for The Presswill focus on educating Long Island communities about water conservation and protection.

The ultimate goal of the new venture is to restore and protect the environmental quality of groundwater and surface waters on and around Long Island, according to a press release issued by Defend H20. It also notes that Mr. McAllisters priorities for the organization include promoting sewage management reform, enacting higher water quality standards, protecting wetlands, and stopping the utilization of the pesticide methoprene for controlling mosquitoes.

Its a continuation of my work in clean water advocacy, Mr. McAllister said during an interview on Friday. I have a good working knowledge of the conditions of the bays and state of our waters, and solutions that I believe would start to reduce the trends that we are seeing.

Mr. McAllister, who lives in Quogue, boasts 25 years of experience in environmental conservation consultation and advocacy. He holds a masters degree in coastal zone management and spent the past decade and a half as the Peconic Baykeeper, advocating for clean water along the south shore, including the bays and estuaries of the East End.

Mr. Tollefsen and Mr. Bottini will serve on the board of directors for the new organization, Mr. McAllister said, and help get the nonprofit up and running. Mr. Bottini has collaborated with Mr. McAllister for the past 15 years on environmental issues, and has worked with Mr. Tollefsen for even longer.

Over the past 50 years, I have seen firsthand the decline of our bays, Mr. Tollefsen said. We have to act now and make a stand against these causes locally. Kevin is our guy for this.

Mr. McAllister previously said he was fired from his longtime post on March 4 after the Baykeeper organization accused him of having a romantic relationship with his former development and communications director, Alexandra Millar, and for abusing alcohol on the job.

Mr. McAllister said this week that he still intends to challenge the decision to fire him, though he declined to elaborate on his plans. There is a process thats being pursued, he said. My termination is being challenged, but thats as [much] as Im willing to say.

Ms. Millar has not returned calls seeking comment.

Planned Hyatt in the Loop adds a French brasserie

    - July 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A brasserie called Cochon Volant is slated for the Hyatt hotel planned at 100 W. Monroe St. Photo from CoStar Group Inc.

Acclaimed Chicago chef Roland Liccioni and the restaurant unit of a fast-growing foodservice company are teaming up on a French spot in a forthcoming downtown hotel.

WellDone Hospitality Inc., part of Chicago-based OrganicLife LLC, signed a lease to open a brasserie called Cochon Volant French for flying pig in a 6,000-square-foot space in the 257-room Hyatt hotel under construction in the vintage office building at 100 W. Monroe St., said OrganicLife CEO Jonas Falk.

Mr. Liccioni, who built a name for himself at Le Franais in Wheeling and now runs Les Nomades in Streeterville, will oversee the kitchen, Mr. Falk said.

The restaurant will open in a corner space at Monroe and Clark streets, he said, offering all-day breakfast with French specialties like croissants and, in the evening, Mr. Liccioni's interpretation of dinner classics like steak frites. There will be about 180 seats, plus an outdoor seating area.

The Loop has been rapidly transforming in recent years with new apartment towers and hotel projects. The development boom has spurred a spate of new restaurants, including Chicago-based DineAmic Group's planned steakhouse at LaSalle Street and Wacker Drive and additional dining options in Block 37.

Yet pulling off a restaurant in a downtown hotel isn't easy, since guests often prefer to eat at places different than where they're staying. And the Loop still sees traffic in the area dip when office workers head home.

    'TREMENDOUS AMOUNTS OF CHALLENGES'

At a lot of hotels in the area, restaurants have had tremendous amounts of challenges, and the Loop, on nights and weekends, is very, very quiet, said Chuck Hamburg, principal at Chicago-based consultancy Creative Hospitality Associates and a professor of restaurant management at Roosevelt University. They're going to have to market it as a restaurant that happens to be located in a hotel.

Having Mr. Licconi on board, however, is a huge asset for the restaurant and should help Mr. Falk and OrganicLife President Justin Rolls attract locals, said Mr. Hamburg, who once employed Mr. Rolls.

I know the Housing Authority faces big challenges, said Kent Rohrer, a Ridgefielder who volunteers for Housatonic Habitat for Humanity.

The volunteers came from far and wide.

They came from all over the place New Jersey, Long Island, New York City. There were some Ridgefielders, some people from Trumbull, Easton and Greenwich, said Housing Authority Chairman Bob Hebert,
