In a patio in Calle San Basilio, a theatre show explains this tradition to visitors. :: SUR
A trip through time to discover the origins of the patios of Cordoba. The weather may be becoming hotter in the city of the caliphs but it is a pleasure to spend an interesting and agreeable evening among the geraniums and carnations, and the freshness of the water that flows in the fountains creates an ideal microclimate. The fragrance of jasmine and dama de noche is a constant companion during an evening that is hosted in one of the patios by four friendly personalities, who take visitors on a journey through time to learn in depth about the origins and development of these special places. The patios are at the heart of an unusual festival each year, the Patios of Cordoba, which was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage Site by Unesco in late 2012.
It is at Calle San Basilio number 22 that the theatrical tour led by Fuensanta, Remedios, Manolo and Prudencio takes place. Four characters who are trapped in a time tunnel and with whom we can explore the history of the patios of Cordoba. This initiative has been organised by the Montur agency, which specialises in creative tourism.
The show is performed in Spanish and the visit ends with a complimentary glass of wine from the local Montilla-Moriles region. The shows take place every day from Wednesday to Saturday, but there is only one performance per day, at 9.30pm.
This is a way of bringing the culture and history of the Patios of Cordoba closer to people in an informative and entertaining way. At the same time, it means that we are offering new services for tourism which generate business in the historic city centre and also increase the number of overnight stays in the city, explains the manager of Montur, Jos Luis Baos.
The heart of the city
The patio in question, at number 22 in Calle San Basilio, is right in the heart of Cordoba city. The most characteristic district is that of Alczar Viejo, between the Alczar and the San Basilio church, although patios are also to be found in the Santa Marina district, around San Lorenzo and La Magdalena. In the area around the Mosque-Cathedral, the Jewish quarter also has some fine examples which are very beautiful and very old, but perhaps the loveliest is the Palacio de Viana, where there are 12 different patios.
It is during the month of May every year that the Patios of Cordoba festival takes place. The festival and its famous competition have been held since 1921. The owners and residents of the houses around the patios go to great pains to decorate their properties and win the prestigious prize which is awarded by the local Town Hall. At the same time, there is also a folklore festival, with the participation of some of the best singers and dancers of the region.
There are two different types of patio: one type belongs to an individual house where the rooms are distributed around it. The other type is shared, and is known as a casa de vecinos. These are not found as frequently these days, but the residents all access their respective homes through the patios.

Fans of al fresco meals now have more local dining options, with the June opening of two casual restaurants touting their outdoor seating.
The second location of The Rusty Rudder, a Cornelius, N.C. lakeside joint, is now operating in the former 17 North. According to the Mt. Pleasant restaurant's Facebook page, "The Rudder focuses on farm-fresh ingredients and menu items from the Lowcountry," but the original Rudder is better known for cheap beer, fried food, live music and corn hole tournaments. In addition to burgers, the Rusty Rudder's menu features steaks; oyster pot pie; stuffed flounder; fish tacos and po'-boys.
Renovations at the Rusty Rudder 3563 N. Hwy 17, included remaking the back patio with tables, sofa seating and a detached bar.
At the new Sunsets Bar and Grill, the patio is situated along the Ashley River. Still, chef-manager April Turner says, "the location is far from ideal."
Alluding to the failure of Crawdaddies Restaurant and Lighthouse Waterfront Pavilion, she adds, "We knew it would be a challenge, but we also know that this is a place that could really succeed with the right menu and great customer service."
Sunsets' menu centers on an assortment of sandwiches, salads and appetizers such as wings, quesadillas and peel-and-eat shrimp. The vibe is far from fancy: The only wine available is Copa di Vino, which comes prepackaged in a plastic glass. The canned beer choices are Busch and Miller Light.
"We have happy hour pricing all day, and our vision is to be a great place for the local businesses to come for lunch, and (to offer) a family-friendly environment for the boating community," Turner says, adding that the restaurant has 18 free slips for boaters.
"On a personal note, I think we have the best Shrimp and Grits in Charleston," she continues. "But I bet they all say that."
Rusty Rudder is located at 3563 N. Hwy 17. For more information, call 388-3177 or visit facebook.com/rustyruddermtp.

CONSTRUCTION on the $8.4 million Burrendong Dam safety upgrade has reached the half-way mark, according to State Water.
CONSTRUCTION on the $8.4 million Burrendong Dam safety upgrade has reached the half-way mark, according to State Water.
The project involves construction of an auxiliary spillway as well as strengthening and painting of the existing spillway gates to enable the dam to better withstand extreme floods.
Project manager Guresh Ahuja said to date contractors had established the site, carried out 60 per cent excavation to make way for the auxiliary spillway and commenced strengthening and painting of the spillway gates.
"This upgrade follows the first phase where the main dam wall and saddle dams were raised 1.8 metres to bring the dam into line with NSW Dams Safety Committee standards for extreme floods," he said.
"The two separate contractors Bardavcol and McElligott Partners have sourced subcontractors and suppliers from Wellington, Dubbo and Orange for the earthmoving and gate painting works representing a direct investment in the region's economy.
"Around 30 people are working on the project at the moment, with one third from the local area and most being accommodated locally."
The spillway automation and control systems are also being upgraded as part of the works.
The project will not affect access to the recreation area and will not impact the permanent storage capacity of the dam.

SALEM - Art in concrete.
It almost sounds like a contradiction in terms. Highways, autobahns, bridgeworks, tunnels, speedway walls, barriers and superstructures of all sorts, are called to mind.
But for Rick Lobdell, a 1992 Salem High School graduate who earned a masters of fine arts degree from Savannah College of Art and Design, concrete is a medium he is turning into an art form.
Rick Lobdell, a 1992 Salem High School graduate, has transformed his love of art into a high-demand business that uses concrete as its medium in central Tennessee. A 1996 Mount Union College graduate, Lobdell heads an internationally recognized company called Concrete Mystique with four employees and several subcontractors. Lobdell also creates his own artwork through paintings he sells. The dolphin pool, set onto a concrete floor, is where the concrete and art combine to present unique, highly-desired accents for high-end homes. (Contributed photo)
He works from a 6,400 square foot office and warehouse in Nashville, Tenn. He owns the company, called Concrete Mystique Engraving and considers himself part of a pretty elite group.
"I only know of five or 10 people in the world who treat it as an art form." Lobdell said.
"The average concrete guy has no idea of what I'm doing and I've never poured concrete."
Today, with two companies - he also owns a concrete furniture company called Gallery Mystique - Lobdell has four direct employees and four or five sub-contractors.
He moved on to Savannah after graduating from Mount Union College in 1996 to study at Savannah where he met his girlfriend who is now his wife, Natalie.
A molecular biologist, she headed toward Vanderbilt in Nashville.
