Eagle swoops into Dorset living room

    - June 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

They then phoned a local bird of prey rescue centre and an expert spent 30 minutes getting the young eagle off its makeshift perch using a dead chick.

It was then reunited with its owner and falconer James Moore who revealed the young bird was called Storm and was being trained to ward off seagulls at a nearby landfill site.

It had been reported missing three days prior to turning up at Ms Morrells house after it was frightened by a loud bang and broke its tethers.

Ms Morrell, a retired maths teacher in her 50s, said: "We were about to watch the final of the French Open tennis when this big black thing swooped into the room.

"We have had small birds fly into the patio doors before and I thought it might have happened again but then Karen said 'it's an eagle'.

"We couldn't believe it. Initially there was total panic - our two dogs were in the front room and they both jumped to their feet and started barking.

"We took them into a bedroom and shut the door then went back into the lounge to get a proper look.

"There was the huge eagle, around 18 inches tall, sat on top of the wooden glass cabinet.

"It had knocked over a few ornaments and then started pecking away at a bowl of pot pourri.

"We thought about trying to tempt it back outside and tried putting ham outside but it didn't work so we called the police who put us in touch with Wessex Bird of Prey Rescue.

Perched imperiously on top of a wooden display cabinet, it looks rather like something brought home from the taxidermist. But this eagle was very much alive, swooping into a living room through a set of open patio doors.

The bird, a steppe eagle called Storm, landed on the cabinet and then knocked over a selection of ornaments with its 4ft wings and pecked at a bowl of pot-pourri.

Eagle flies into a living room in Broadstone

5:28pm Sunday 8th June 2014 in News By Toby Wadey

AN EAGLE flew into a womans living room as she watched the French Open final in Broadstone this afternoon.

Wendy Morrell was at home with friend Karen Ruddlesden and her two dogs, Coco and Udo, when the surprise visitor swooped into the house.

It is a hot day so we had the doors open and were watching the tennis. Then suddenly all hell broke loose in our living room, she added.

This enormous black thing flew in and the dogs went absolutely berserk.

Wendy promptly called Wessex Bird of Prey Rescue, which quickly deployed an officer to collect the bird, later identified as a Russian Steppe eagle called Boris.

Boris had earlier gone missing from Beacon Hill landfill site in Corfe Mullen.

Ash Rust Erupts in Philadelphia Putting More Stress on Ash Trees Already Plagued by Serious Health Problems; Giroud …

    - June 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) June 09, 2014

For the first time in several years, Ash Rust, a fungal disease, has erupted in Philadelphia. Plagued by other serious health problems including the fatal Emerald Ash Borer, Ash trees infected with Ash Rust suffer further stress and often decline. Giroud Tree and Lawn helps homeowners understand Ash Rust symptoms, the impact on trees and the best actions to maintain tree health.

"Ash Rust infects White, Green and sometimes Black Ash," explains Lou Giroud, President of Giroud Tree and Lawn and ISA Certified Arborist. "Symptoms start as small yellow to yellow-orange spots on leaves beginning in Mid-May. Wart like-swellings may also erupt and leaves often become distorted. By July, heavily infected Ash Trees may have significant leaf loss."

Preventative treatment is the best control but is not recommended since the disease only occurs sporadically. Giroud Tree and Lawn recommends the following tree service actions:

    1. Schedule Ash Tree Inspection Now: Have an ISA Certified Arborist evaluate overall health of the tree and determine the best actions to protect tree health.

    2. Reduce Tree Stress: In the fall, deep root fertilization, soil amendments, vitamins and nutrients can help to boost the trees immune system.

    3. Emerald Ash Borer Treatment: A fatal pest, treatment is the only way to protect Ash Trees from Emerald Ash Borer. If the Ash Tree is valuable to the landscape, Emerald Ash Borer treatment is critical.

    4. Regular Monitoring: Because Ash Trees face formidable health issues, it is important to have professional inspections regularly to catch emerging issues early.

Like most Rust diseases, Ash Rust requires a second host. In this case, the fungal spores spend the winter on marsh and cord grass along the coast. An unusual confluence of conditions is required for the spores to travel as far as the Philadelphia area.

Recognizing that Ash trees are already plagued with a variety of serious health issues like Emerald Ash Borer, a professional tree inspection is the most important first step a homeowner can take to protect the health of Ash trees.

Barrier Lawn & Pest Announces Tips for Boise Area Residents about How to Keep Invasive Pests Out of Their Homes this …

    - June 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Boise, Idaho (PRWEB) June 09, 2014

Barrier Lawn & Pest is providing four tips for Boise residents to help them get rid of Elm Seed Bugs this summer. This new invasive species can be a nuisance for Idaho home owners, and can be present in large numbers. However, taking the proper steps can eliminate these pests.

Elm seed bugs were first spotted in Idaho counties, Canyon and Ada in 2012. They come from south-central Europe, and how these bugs migrated is unknown. Elm Seed Bugs are visibly related to Box Elder Bugs, and the two are often confused. The only major visible difference is size; Elm Seed Bugs measure around a quarter of an inch. The Elm Seed Bug overwinters as an adult, mates and lays eggs in the spring on elm trees. The larvae feed on the fruits and seeds, and in May or June become adults. These pesky creatures begin entering homes in earnest during the summertime.

Elm Seed Bugs are a nuisance because they often enter homes and other buildings in large numbers, as this video illustrates. The bugs have scent glands that produce an unpleasant odor when crushed making them even more of a nuisance. They are often observed inside around windows, doors, and in kitchens and bathrooms.

Populations of Elm Seed Bugs are expected to continue to rise in 2014, as early reports from Barrier Lawn & Pests technicians and customers indicate. Though this invasive species is known for pestering home owners in great numbers, there are ways to keep these pests at bay.

    1. Sealing cracks in the foundation, as well as around doors and windows. Proper sealing of these areas with calk or other material is vital to block entry.

    2. Install screens on doors and windows. As weather warms up, doors and windows are often left open. Unfortunately, this quite literally opens the door for Elm Seed Bugs to pass through freely. Installing screens allows people to enjoy open doors without letting bugs in.

    3. Remove Elm Trees if possible. This is probably the most important thing home owners can do to remove harborage and food for Elm Seed Bugs. Though expensive and heartbreaking to watch a beautiful shade tree go away, residents can take comfort in having a more pest-free home.

    4. Exterior perimeter treatment with a residual insecticide that focuses on cracks, crevices, and possible entry points is a must. Safe consumer products are available for use that will do the trick. If residents are uncomfortable doing it on their own, they should contact a reputable, licensed pest control company to do the job.
