A 58-year-old Baltimore County firefighter died Friday afternoon after he suffered a suspected heart attack during training, officials said.
Robert Fogle III, a 27-year veteran and career firefighter, was participating in exercises at the Sparrows Point training facility when he became ill. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
"It just reminds us about the sacrifice that our first responders do each and every day and the risks that they take to be fit and capable of helping others," Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz said.
Officials said Fogle had gone with an engine crew and medic crew from the Pikesville station to the Sparrows Point facility for routine training at 1 p.m. They first did "operations readiness training," which involved firefighting skills such as climbing stairs and lifting ladders, said Fire Chief John Hohman.
After a break, the group went to "the maze," a trailer where firefighters must use their breathing apparatus to navigate through an unfamiliar area. No smoke was used, Hohman said.
When it became clear Fogle was in distress, he was quickly removed and treated, Hohman said.
"It wasn't long at all. The maze is designed in such a way that when something like this happens, they can dismantle things and get somebody out fairly quickly. The crew was right there," Hohman said.
It was there that Fogle suffered an apparent heart attack and was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
All firefighters complete the training annually, Hohman said. This is the first death at the training center. He said there will be an internal investigation into Fogle's death.
Fogle's death is considered a "line of duty" death, Kamenetz said, the first in the county in 2014.

RENO, Nev. - The City of Reno and Sierra Nevada Community Aquatics encourage citizens to volunteer for this years Adopt-A-Pool event on Saturday, May 31, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Idlewild Pool in Reno.
Volunteers will assist in the seasonal preparation of Idlewild Pool and the surrounding area by clean-up efforts such as weed removal, sweeping, washing windows, cleaning out gutter drains, painting and more.
Last year, we had a record number of more than 130 volunteers who put in approximately 350 hours of volunteer work, and we hope to see even more people this year, said Andy Bass, Recreation Manager for the City of Renos Parks, Recreation and Community Services department. This annual event continues to grow and bring aquatics groups together to demonstrate a willingness to help ensure the citizens of Reno have public pools to use.
If available, volunteers should bring their own rakes, brooms and gardening equipment for planting. They should also wear covered shoes that can get wet and clothes appropriate for painting in.
For more information about Adopt-A-Pool, visit sncaquatics.org or call 834-7766. The planned opening date for Idlewild Pool, located at Idlewild Park, is June 6.

Channel crossing: Bernard Tomic is happy to leave Paris for British grass. Photo: AFP
As much as Bernard Tomic may expect the welcome shift from clay to grass to instantly transform his difficult season, Davis Cup coach Josh Eagle has warned the world No.80 not to assume his favourite surface will not automatically be the career-reviving panacea he would like.
As Marinko Matosevic's straight sets loss to Andy Murray emptied the French Open draw of its last Australian man at the second round stage, Tomic who had earlier lost 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 to 12th seed Richard Gasquet left Paris for London on Thursday to start an extended preparation for the Wimbledon lead-up event at Queen's Club.
The 21-year-old is yet to win a main draw match after double hip surgery in January, and remains a magnet for on-court criticism and off-court scandal. But the 2011 Wimbledon quarter-finalist is a proven, enthusiastic performer on grass as he needs to be in the coming weeks to help salvage a ranking that is plummeting towards the danger zone.
"It's almost a relief for Bernie that the clay swing is over and he can try and focus on getting some wins on the grass,'' Eagle said. "He very much feels he can just flick the switch and start winning; it's not going to be as easy as that. Knowing Bernie as I do, I honestly believe he's the sort of guy that will go to the grass and feel like 'right, I'm going to have some wins now, this is my surface, and this is my time to shine'. Easier said than done, though. That's the problem.

"It was pretty clear in his match with Gasquet, that not only was his movement struggling, but I think he was struggling with confidence, so some wins on the grass at Queen's would give him a real boost, and he's just a really good player on grass, whereas a lot of the field are not comfortable on it.
"I would expect Bernie to do pretty well, but he does need to start having some wins soon, or otherwise it'll put pressure on his ranking, and the last thing he needs is to fall outside the top 100, because he's too good to be ranked where he is, and I'm not sure how he'll handle having to play some qualifying events and stuff like that.''
While Tomic admitted his dislike of the French Open, it may prove to have a far more positive effect on Matosevic, who had so memorably celebrated his first grand slam match win in 13 attempts with an extended claycourt roll he ended only because he started to feel dizzy. A swift 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 reality check followed on Thursday against Wimbledon champion and seventh seed Andy Murray, but the effects could be extended.
Matosevic says he is already playing more freely the much-discussed burden of a barren grand slam record having finally, mercifully, been lifted with his four-set success against fellow journeyman Dustin Brown. "Everything came easier,'' he said. "Even though (Murray) won pretty comfortably against me, I feel much better on the court now ... I just feel free to play now, I don't have to think about that, it's done with, thank God."

WILKES-BARRE First it was Coughlin High in Wilkes-Barre, now administrators say there are structual concerns with a second high school in the city. Some parents are worried about safety and the districts image.
Orange fences went up outside Meyers High School yesterday afternoon as a safety precaution about a crumbling facade.
Because some of the entrances are now blocked off, the Wilkes-Barre area superintendent said summer school will not be held there.
Students at Meyers High School are counting down the last two weeks of class until their summer vacation.
But many of the kids and their parents cant help but notice the bright orange fences and the signs directing them away from the sides of the school and some of the entrances.
The Wilkes-Barre Area School District superintendent says the fences went up around parts of Meyers High School on Carey Avenue because a recent review revealed structural concerns over the facade.
Its the same reason why fences and barriers went up around Coughlin High School on North Washington Street earlier this month: the buildings are showing their age.
It does. But on the whole on the inside it is not that bad as people think it is, said Mary Conrad.
Conrad, a crossing guard at Meyers High School, said she graduated from Meyers in 1948 and has a great grandson going to class there.
Conrad hopes Meyers will be repaired and can stay open for another generation.

Milton Good fences make good neighbors is not holding true in Milton.Town officials and some residents do not see eye-to-eye about fences sought to protect the towns water utility facilities.
Milton Mayor and Town Council in April unanimously approved a $37,000 contract with Abel Fence LLC of Wilmington, to install fencing around the Chandler Street elevated water tank, the Public Works Department maintenance yard on Front Street and the elevated water tank adjacent to Shipbuilders Village.
Most of the money would come from a grant, but town residents say the council's choice of chain-link fencing will reduce property values. They called on council to seek public input before making decisions.
A 2013 grant of $30,000 would pay for most of the fencing, but Kristy Rodgers, Miltons acting town manager, said the town must use it by June 30 or the funds will be lost. Rodgers had earlier stated the grant, which the town applied for in 2012, came from the Department of Homeland Security.
At mayor and councils May 22 meeting, Rodgers clarified the money is from the Delaware Emergency Management Agency.
Mayor Marion Jones has called the fencing a legacy of her administration, and she suggested council upgrade from standard chain-link fencing to decorative aluminum fencing for the Chandler and Front street portions of the project.
The panel approved the $6,900 upgrade but only for a portion fronting the Chandler Street site, and amended the town budget May 7 to cover the additional expense. Black chain link fencing will be used around the Chandler Street water tower.
Milton property owners Jeff Daily, Ed Harris, Barbara Wagoner and Ginny Weeks were the only residents to attend the May 21 meeting.
Harris, who owns a house immediately adjacent to the Chandler Street water tower and a house across the street, told the panel neither DEMA nor the Department of Homeland Security requires municipalities to put fences around water facilities because there have been no cases of water poisoning in the country.
