Squat demolition called off after four nights of rioting in Barcelona

    - May 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rioters hurled bottles and stones at police barricades, burnt bins and broke windows during the protests. Banks have also been attacked and the excavator used to demolish the Can Vies building set on fire.

Baton-wielding riot police charged protesters, fired foam bullets across the barricades and attempted to disperse the crowd using a high-pitched horn.

The violent disturbances were blamed on a small group of troublemakers but the protest has won support from across Spain and peaceful demonstrations to show solidarity have been planned in other cities this weekend.

"These protests are not just about the eviction. The eviction was just one more blow after the crisis," a Can Vies representative said.

"The people are fed up of taking blows and in the end they explode."

The abandoned property was occupied in 1997 by left-wing activists who used it to host concerts, training courses and other community activities in the rundown area of the Catalan capital.

But the transport authority which owns the property wants to redevelop the area and turn it into a park.

Police forcibly cleared the house on Monday following a court order issued after negotiations broke down between the city and the squatters.

After an emergency meeting Barcelona city council said it would attempt new dialogue with neighbourhood leaders to reach a peaceful accord.

Developer: Demolition of former Daily Camera building to start next week

    - May 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition of the brick building that once housed the operations of the Daily Camera in downtown Boulder is scheduled to occur next week, a couple days after an early morning project to replace a transformer on the property.

Early next week, likely Tuesday morning, a backhoe will start ripping down the building at 1048 Pearl St., said Dan Schuetz, project manager for Nichols Partnership.

Schuetz's Denver-based firm is developing PearlWest, a 160,000-square-foot commercial development on the site of the Camera's former properties at 1048 Pearl and 1023 Walnut St.

Construction-related work on PearlWest commenced on May 12 with workers fencing off the property. In the days following, they demolished the brick wall and archway that lined the sidewalk along Pearl Street.

The building was expected to start coming down as well, but that work should come next week.

"There are just a lot of moving parts in a project like this, probably thousands of moving parts," Schuetz said.

The majority of the activity in recent weeks has been based in the alley south of 1048 Pearl, where workers conducted pre-construction work to replace an existing transformer that fed the building and three neighboring properties.

Xcel Energy plans to remove the existing transformer and install a new transformer between 3 and 7 a.m. Sunday, said Mark Stutz, a spokesman for the utilities provider.

A "handful" of customers would be affected by the transition, he said.

    How to build a home

    - May 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Now is a great time to build your dream home.

These days, home prices are affordable in many parts of the nation. Labor and construction costs have stabilized, and interest rates are near historic lows.

When you are considering the next step toward building a home that's all your own -- from design to finish -- here are some things to keep in mind.

    CUSTOM OR NOT

Your first step is determining which kind of builder you want: custom or production.

Both builders have advantages and disadvantages.

Production builders are the most popular. Many people believe that production builders are affordable and fast. These builders have several floor plans they use and some level of interior and exterior customization.

When using them, you may be limited in the location of your home, how much the floor plan can be customized and the kind of quality you can expect.

With a custom builder, you limit is only your imagination and budget. While a custom home can cost more than a production or "tract" home, buyers prefer it because they can build on their own land and decide every single aspect of the construction process.

Spring Cleaning Tips from Stop & Stor

    - May 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 30, 2014

That time of year has arrived when the days get longer, and it becomes easier to do something about the carpet stains, dust and stale air that have built up during the last few weeks and, perhaps, months. Finally, you can throw open all of the windows and let in the fresh air without freezing. Now, get ready to revitalize your home with a good spring cleaning.

Whether you conduct a full-house or apartment cleaning once a year or once a month, you may want to consider renting a self storage unit to get things out of the way during the process. In addition, cleaning and organizing easily can turn into redecorating. Stop & Stor storage facilities are great places to store items for the long-term that do not fit into your updated home design scheme but that you are not ready to toss, sell or donate.

    Spring Cleaning Tips

    1. To keep track of what you have already accomplished, clean from the top down, dusting and washing ceiling fans, light fixtures and corners first. Then wipe and wash walls, windows, counters, furniture and floors.

    2. A similar philosophy works with windows. Try cleaning the inside from left to right and the outside from the top down. This will make it easier to tell which side has streaks, if either.

    3. Replace smoke detector batteries, test the smoke detectors and give them a good wipe down.

    4. Clear counters and shelves and wash them thoroughly. Wash knick-knacks and dust books. If you have accumulated stacks of papers or bills, now is a good time to file the important documents in your self storage unit. Recycle junk mail, outdated magazines and used envelopes. Shred old bills and other papers that contain personal information.

    5. Pull out appliances and wash the sides and floor. Clean normally hidden spills and wipe the walls.

    6. If you plan to paint or thoroughly shampoo the carpets, consider moving your furniture into a self storage unit. Many companies will rent units for as little as a day. Mobile storage companies will even bring a storage unit to your house and remove it when you are done with it.
