Alyt lets users control their home via voice

    - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The trickle of devices looking to turn the family home into smart homes whereby residents can remotely control everything from household lighting to security systems has turned into a flood recently. The latest device promising to help usher in this suburban technological utopia is the Alyt, an Android-powered smart home system that can be controlled not only through an app on a mobile device, but also via voice commands.

Unlike previous smart home management systems, such as Revolv, which offers app-based control, and the Ninja Sphere, which also features gesture control, Alyt adds voice control to the mix. The system can also learn, so if users ask for the same things repeatedly, Alyt will start to execute the actions automatically. However, for those that prefer the "old-fashioned" method, the device can also be remotely controlled via an app available for iOS and Android devices.

Although Alyt's functions are limited only to what sensors and appliances are connected to it, its creators highlight its security capabilities, touting it as a professional security system. To this end, in addition to the Alyt hub the basic starter package includes a wireless passive infrared (PIR) motion detector and wireless door sensor. The former can be positioned around the property perimeter to trigger an alert when a breach occurs, while the latter will let the user know when the door has been opened or closed.

For the more security conscious, Alyt supports the connection of additional hardware, such as wireless IP video cameras to stream video from the home in real time, and home security systems than use facial or voice recognition to allow or block access to the home.

It also supports sensors that monitor environmental factors in and around the home to automate home heating and cooling to save power. The system also integrates with the NEST home thermostat and can be set to alter the household temperature based on time of day and weather conditions. Connecting smoke CO2 and water flood detectors also gives the system the ability to monitor for fire or flood be it from a storm or leaky dishwasher or washing machine.

Perhaps the most promising feature of the Android-powered Alyt is it that it is open source, allowing third party developers to create their own apps for the device, which can be made available through a planned Alyt app store.

"We believe in an open, boundless world, and thats why our product is the first Smart Home Manager powered by Android, says Luca Gaetano Capula, founder and CEO of Link Your Things. Since Android is open and runs inside the unit, thousands of developers will be able to help us improve consumers lives at home. We decided to make even our hardware design open so that developers and manufacturers can innovate using ALYT as a solid base.

To ensure Alyt is able to be integrated with a range of existing smart home devices, it is compatible with Bluetooth Low Energy, 3.5G Cellular, infrared, NFC, DLNA, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave and ZigBee communication protocols. The system can also be used in local Wi-Fi mode and maintain connectivity via the cellular network if internet connectivity is lost, while an inbuilt backup battery will keep it operational if the power goes out for how long will obviously depend on usage.

A US$100,000 Indiegogo campaign was launched on April 8, with shipping set to begin from July if all goes to plan. Pledge tiers range from $149 for a starter kit, up to $599 for a Video Security + Smart Home Kit.

The Alyt Indiegogo video pitch can be viewed below.

Vitt Heating & Air Conditioning Kicks Off First Summer as Certified Service Specialists for St. Charles Area

    - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) May 29, 2014

After receiving their certification to service both St. Charles city and county in November of 2013, St. Louis heating and cooling company, Vitt Heating & Air Conditioning, is proud to be able to provide HVAC checkups and recommendations for even more customers this summer. The HVAC company has been in business for 60 years, providing service, maintenance, and general repair for heating and cooling systems. The recent certification to expand their service area is seen as a welcome addition to an already-successful business model.

Vice President Jeffrey Vitt says the company has a lot to offer their expanded client base, and encourages residents in the St. Charles area to have their HVAC systems inspected before the summer heat sets in. Many times, says Vitt, the lack of maintenance causes a wide array of problems. An HVAC unit thats 30-plus years old can cost $600 to $700 to get it operating. Once a system has reached a certain age, it may lack energy efficiency and require repairs on a frequent basis.

The company provides their customers with inspections and assessments as well as recommendations, such as when a home a St. Louis AC repair job might actually be more cost effective than a replacement. Vitt also recommends a realistic assessment of the type of refrigerant used in a particular cooling system. Coolant used in units that are five to 30 years old may no longer meet government regulations, he says. This makes the older coolant extremely expensive -- and hard to find.

Vitt Heating & Air Conditioning began offering models using the newer coolant back in 2003. While it was initially a larger expense for the company, the boost in efficiency it brings to the homes they service has been well worth the investment. During the summer, the use of a newer, more energy-efficient model may cut your air conditioning costs in half, says Vitt.

Vitt Heating & Air Conditioning has been in business since 1954, providing the St. Louis community with heating and air services ever since. Always remember that its never to early to be thinking about the next season and getting a St. Louis furnace repair done. Sheffield handyman charged with holding woman hostage, trying to kill her

    - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SHEFFIELD, Alabama -- Sheffield police have charged a man in connection to a brutal scene they encountered early Saturday.

Sgt. Ray Terry, who is leading the investigation, said Bobbie Dean Dickerson is charged with attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping and first-degree theft. He said Dickerson was found at a home on 13th Street where a woman was held against her will and assaulted for hours.

The woman told police Dickerson worked for her as a handyman. She said he came to her home while intoxicated early Saturday. She told police an altercation ensued and Dickerson held her hostage and assaulted her for four hours. He allegedly threw her down and cut her throat during the attack.

Terry said patrol officers responded to the home and found the woman in bad shape and with incisions on her throat. They applied first aid and CPR until paramedics arrived. She was treated locally before being flown to Huntsville Hospital for surgery. Terry said she has since been released.

Dickerson remains in the Sheffield City Jail.

Hooper bridge opens, Cloverly road project is next

    - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Hooper North bridge opened on Friday, and the Dodge County Highway Department is now turning its attention to the Cloverly Road project.

Work to replace a 1954 trestle bridge that formerly spanned the Elkhorn River on County Road 19 half a mile north of Hooper began in 2013, and then stopped during the winter weather months, when the new bridge was opened to winter traffic.

The bridge closed again on March 24 to complete final details of the project before reopening last week.

A.M. Cohron and Son Inc. of Atlantic, Iowa, was the general contractor for the $1.581 million federal aid project. The county and the state were each responsible for 10 percent of the costs. M.E. Collins Contracting Co. Inc. of Wahoo was the concrete contractor.

The route is a major thoroughfare for agricultural traffic in the Hooper area, including Hoegemeyer Hybrids, but the 1954 trestle bridge had reached the end of its life expectancy, and weight limits were placed on it before it was removed to make room for the new bridge.

Highway Superintendent Alan Doll told county supervisors on Wednesday that he is beginning the process of notifying businesses along Cloverly Road, where an asphalt resurfacing project is expected to begin on June 9.

Dodge County in January awarded a $362,000 contract to Pavers Inc. of Waverly to resurface Cloverly from U.S. Highway 77 east to Platte Avenue, and then about one block north on Platte.

The project, intended to alleviate rutting, will mill the road surface and overlay new asphalt. County crews will then raise the shoulders to match the new road elevation.

The project includes several hundred feet of guardrail replacement, and curb and gutter work at the intersections.

Well probably be doing some minor work at first, some curbs and patching and stuff like that, and then theyll start milling the old asphalt down and hauling that away, and then coming in and overlaying the six-inch asphalt. Once thats completed, theyll do the shoulder work and guardrail, Doll said.

Winnipeggers' lawns struggling to recover from tough winter

    - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PHIL HOSSACK / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Enlarge Image

Chris and Jim McDermid pose with new annuals in their yard Wednesday. Despite winter being hard on their yard and having to bring 10 yards of topsoil in to mitigate the damage, they're optimistic about a late-spring planting. Photo Store

Even after the object of Jim McDermids angst had melted away, he was still lamenting the winter of discontent.

Perched on his front veranda, McDermid was pointing around his lawn for remnants of one of the cruellest winters on record. He points to where the snow was more than two metres high. He talks about how his furnace shut down five times because snow plugged the intake. Then theres the large patch of black seeded soil on his front law, part of the 10 yards of dirt the McDermids ordered to spread over the brown spots that pockmark their grass, as well as lawns all across the city.

"The winter before we were in Hawaii," McDermid said. "So every time I was out shovelling snow I was thinking I was in Hawaii the same time the year before. Its been a hard year. We know we get snow but it was more than we could bear."

Winnipeggers are still dealing with the fallout from one of the coldest and longest winters on record.

"We are definitely behind in terms of care and fertilizing lawns," Ryan Buffie, operations manager at Green Drop Lawns, said Wednesday. "Normally, we would have started a month earlier. Its been a noticeable delay for everyone."

As one might expect, given the sudden arrival of summer, business is booming for Buffie and his Green Drop operation. Wednesday morning, his company received 143 calls over a four-hour period, with most of those calls ending in appointments for lawn aerations, seeding and fertilization care.

"The biggest thing people want fixed is the winter kill," Buffie said. "Its been a huge issue this year."

Winter kill is caused from a lot of snow being over one area of grass. When that snow melts during the day and freezes overnight, the repetition of this cycle eventually kills the grass and then leads to snow mould. The only way to resuscitate the grass is to aerate and re-seed the section, and that process takes time to take root.

Steele: Choose the right mix of plants for a waterwise garden

    - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bumblebees and plants have a symbiotic relationship, and we wouldn't have food without it.

I began my front garden after removing all the lawn in 2006.

It is a slow and interesting process, testing plants and procedures to see what works best in sandy, dry soil under a beautiful, mature honey locust tree.

At first, the big empty space was daunting, so vigorous self-seeding perennials that thrived were welcome:

Lamium Beacon Silver, White Nancy and Chequers bloom all summer.

Tradescantia (Spiderwort) has spikey, grass-like foliage topped with small flowers most of the summer.

Geranium phaeum has interesting black markings on its maple-shaped leaves. June-blooming, black flowers produce lots of seedlings.

For the past year I have been digging all these plants out.

I appreciate their good points but their self-seeding is so promiscuous and far-flung that they are overtaking other plants.

After the shootings, how Santa Barbara is trying to heal (+video)

    - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The response to the killing rampage in Santa Barbara, Calif., has included not only a memorial service but also memorial walls, comfort dogs, and instant offices for counseling.

From one end of the University of California, Santa Barbara, to the other, it is clear this is a campus and community on the mend, after a deadly rampage that took six lives, along with the young killer, and injured 13.

Some 20,000 students, teachers, and family members gathered on Tuesday for a memorial service at Harder Stadium to mark "a day of mourning and reflection," amid all the sadly familiar conventions of grief support after mass killings.

"This has been very difficult and frankly, there are people from one end of the spectrum to the other in their ability to cope, says senior David Ragan, standing outside the Student Resource Center with a handmade sign: Free Hugs.

Some people are religious and some arent, and everyone is going inside themselves to replace the darkness with light in their own way, he says, noting that individual responses to his full afternoon of hugs ranged from tears or no response to "Im OK" or "Im great."

Twenty yards away, a football field-sized green is sprinkled with temporary gazebos populated with volunteers from support groups such as the Hope network and Love on a Leash, providing animal-assisted crisis response and pet provided therapy, respectively. Larger dogs lie with paws outstretched, stroked by passersby students, faculty, and residents of nearby Isla Vista, the sprawling community of apartments, small houses, restaurants, and sorority and fraternity houses that abuts the campus of 22,000 students.

Both the dogs and their handlers are trained to provide support to anyone deeply affected by these crises and disasters, says LaWana Heald, Hope's Southwest regional director, handing out a four-color card of Robby, a golden retriever and yellow Labrador mix, who had been screened and trained for his ability to make people smile.

Volunteers from UCSBs Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) hand out blue paper sheets with 11 points of Strategies for Managing Grief, such as: A rule of thumb is this: If you feel like crying, then cry. If not, then dont. Sometimes something funny will happen, just like it used to. When that happens, go ahead and laugh. Its OK.
