We can all rest easy, because yesterday, the president of the United States assured the graduating cadets at West Point and the rest of America that, despite enormous pressure, he is not going to intervene militarily everywhere at all times.
Hes just not. So stop asking!
To say that we have an interest in pursuing peace and freedom beyond our borders is not to say that every problem has a military solution, the president said.
I know what youre thinking. Youre thinking: Whew! That was a close one! Because before he spoke, the consensus opinion was that every problem has a military solution. Now we know better! Thanks, President Obama!
His speech at West Point was billed as one of the most significant of his presidency an address in which Obama would lay out a philosophical case for his administrations conduct and choices.
He found it necessary to deliver such a speech because of the worldwide distress his disastrous off-the-cuff remarks in Asia caused a few weeks ago.
Then, he summed up his foreign policy this way: You hit singles; you hit doubles; every once in a while we may be able to hit a home run.
With these words, the president seemed to be suggesting the United States ought to be evaluated much as a baseball sabermetrician would evaluate a quality utility player one of those guys who bounces around the major leagues and adds some small but meaningful value to a teams production.
The United-States-as-utility-player may be the country hed prefer to lead, given his lifelong skepticism about Americas ability to bring about change for the better beyond our borders.
But it doesnt do the slightest justice to the power, influence or responsibilities of the country he was twice elected to lead.

If hed been dashing through a muddy foxhole during a battle in World War II or in the Korean War, the need for speed surely would have propelled Gunnery Sgt. Bernie Ruchin into a safe zone without further ado. Nowadays, the retired Marine, who will be 90 years old in November, knows nobody is shooting at him.
All that was dented was his pride and his kneecaps when he caught an edge on a stair at his Bedford home and fell on his knees. The floor offered a landing zone of carpet softer than gravel but he came back from the hospital with a cast on his leg. He was laid up for seven months.
A full-body shower was prohibited because of the cast. He said he craved watering the entirety of the more than six feet of height that is Bernie Ruchin.
Thats when Building Dreams for Marines, based in Nashua, did some recon and came in with a plan for a redesign of Ruchins bathroom. A complete renovation, highlighted with the removal of a heavy bathtub, showcased the installation of a step-in shower with accents of marble.
Michael Browning and craftsmen from Cobb Hill Construction, assisted by local Marines from Bravo Company, completed the job, a $15,000 value, in a few weeks. The project was deemed by Ruchin as first rate.
Ruchins handicap-accessible shower and bathroom installation was the fifth project completed in New Hampshire by Building Dreams for Marines, a nonprofit focused on life-enhancing home modifications provided free of charge to Marines whose service has left them with physical limitations.

KINGSPORT, Tenn. -
Kingsport police are urging residents to be wary of paving scams.
Police say scam artists are out this time of year, trying to get your money by pretending to be a legitimate busines.
This is certainly not a new issue, as paving scams often surge in the Spring and early Summer each year.
Kingsport police say the single most common technique used by paving scam artists consists of the following ruse:
A scam artist will drive through a neighborhood looking for a driveway that stands out as one that could possibly be in need of repair. He will then stop, completely unsolicited, and approach the homeowner. He will claim that he has some material (asphalt) on his truck that is left over from another job that he can offer at a special reduced rate.
KPD offers this advice: If you encounter anyone touting anything remotely similar to the above narrative, STOPthis is almost always a scam. Ask the individual to leave your property and do not enter into business negotiations with them.
In a recent incident in Kingsport, a paving scam artist verbally offered to re-pave an average size driveway for $2,600. Upon completion, he handed the homeowner a bill for an exorbitant $26,500.
Additional Paving Scam Techniques to be Cautious of:
1) Scammers will often be vague about how much a job will actually cost. Always get a firm quote in writing detailing exactly what work is to be done complete with a mutually agreed upon price.

YARMOUTH One of Yarmouths most ambitious demolition projects in quite some time is underway this week.
Zion Baptist, a historic church and town landmark, is being dismantled, with the walls expected to come down after the weekend.
Employees of a New Glasgow demolition firm removed bricks by hand Thursday from high atop a west wall of the 118-year-old church.
Were just taking that wall down some because its close to a house and with brick you never know which way its going to go sometimes, said Marinus Verhagen, owner of Verhagen Demolition Ltd., the company in charge of pulling down the building.
The church is surrounded by homes and a museum.
You have to be careful, Verhagen said. Weve got to watch traffic on the street, too.
Yesterday we took the steeple off so we could get at the bell.
The huge bell cast from a bronze-brass alloy weighs about 475 kilograms, church trustees said. It was made in Baltimore in 1900 and installed a year later in the church, which opened for worship in 1896.
Workers removed some asbestos from the basement Thursday and expect Monday to begin knocking down walls in the Parade Street edifice featuring Queen Anne Revival architecture.
Theyll be permitted to fill the basement hole with broken brick, once other materials have been trucked away, said Verhagen.
