Demolition of House Bittersweet For Couple

    - May 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A heavy equipment operator with Falcon Contracting pulls up the foundation during the demolition of a house at 1560 S. Floral Ave. in Bartow on Wednesday.

BARTOW | A wrecking ball has closed a chapter in a dispute that has plagued a Bartow couple and city administrators for nearly a decade.

Crews demolished the brick house at 1560 S. Floral Ave. this week, leaving the city to contend with the empty lot left behind.

But for Mike and Tina Keeley, who called that house home for 12 years, it's a bittersweet moment.

"I really liked that home and it saddens me to see it destroyed," Mike Keeley said. "We raised our children there, for all the years they went to school, and we had so many memories there. It was such a pretty house. It's really sad."

This week's demolition culminates a fight that ultimately led to a Polk County courtroom.

The Keeleys alleged the city altered the stormwater flow in their south Bartow neighborhood and those changes left their house under water during downpours. They sued the city in 2006, prompting the city to mount its own legal fight.

The Keeleys abandoned the 1,935-square-foot house in 2008, and three years later, the city got it in a $200,000 settlement that ended the lawsuit.

David Wright, the city's finance director, said $175,000 of that settlement came out of the city's budget, and Bartow's insurance carrier paid the remaining $25,000.

The Keeleys had bought the Floral Avenue house for $80,000 in 1996, according to county Property Appraiser records.

Demolition on Ellis Brothers Furniture Begins

    - May 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition of the Ellis Brothers furniture building on Water Street in downtown Binghamton began Friday.

Crews started with some hand demolition, focusing on the building's pressure points. This weekend, major demolition work is slated to occur. It may take a few days to demolish it and a few weeks to haul the debris away. A massive fire destroyed the building last month. Just this week did engineers deem the building unsafe and said it needed to come down. Mayor Rich David says once the major demo work is completed, part of Water Street will be reopened.

Rich David says, "Once the heavy demolition is complete, we do expect to open a portion of Water Street, one lane of Water Street, to traffic so that the businesses can be more accessible than they currently are right now."

The Mayor says the Ellis family is evaluating a number of different options. Ellis Brothers Washington Street location is still open. During the demolition, Nirchi's on Water Street will be closed, but all other businesses in the area will remain open.

    Demolition squad attacked in Gurgaon

    - May 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Over half-a-dozen government officials, including four fire-fighters, were injured in an attack on the demolition squad of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) by the locals at Nathupur village in DLF Phase-3 area here late on Thursday night.

About 90 jhuggi-jhonpris were gutted when a fire broke out near Nathupur village on Thursday afternoon.

When MCG Commissioner Praveen Kumar went to the spot to take stock of the situation, the locals informed him that the land on which the jhuggis had come up belonged to the civic body.

He also got to know that an under-construction building and a residential building had also come up illegally on the land.

Dr. Kumar immediately called the MCG demolition squad and directed them to raze the unauthorised buildings.

This led to protest from the locals, who turned violent and set two fire department vehicles on fire and damaged six other official vehicles.

Six government officials, including four fire-fighters sustained injuries in the attack. The fire-fighters were admitted to a hospital and discharged by Friday morning. A case has been registered against a dozen villagers in this connection.

Unconfirmed reports said that Dr. Kumar was also held hostage by the mob for more than 30 minutes.

TxDOT agrees to hold off on Lincoln Center demolition until October 1st

    - May 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    UPDATED: Friday, May 23, 2014 - 10:24pm

El Paso, TX (KTSM) When it comes to the demolition of El Paso's historic Lincoln Center, there's no shortage of opinion on whether it should stay or go.

"The community has been fighting for this for over 5 years," said Georgina Perez.

Despite the community protest, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced last week it would begin the process of tearing the flood-damaged building down to make room for new freeways that would ease the congestion on the Spaghetti Bowl.

But TxDOT hit the brakes on those plans and sent El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser a letter on Friday agreeing to hold off on the demolition until October 1st to give the city more time to find a way to keep it standing.

"I hope that during that time, they come to realize the importance of this center and this part of town and these beautiful paintings and what it means to the community," said Irma Camacho.

TxDOT wants the city to meet some demands first, though, before they agree to pause the demolition.

In their letter to Mayor Leeser, the department says, "... If TxDOT agrees to this request the City will immediately withdraw its lawsuit and temporary restraining order against TxDOT." City council will discuss the Lincoln Center at their meeting on Tuesday, May 27th, 2014.

Advocates pushing to preserve the Lincoln Center aren't quite jumping for joy.

Cut your cooling costs by 30% or more

    - May 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Having a technician service your central-air system every year or two could help you save up to 10% on your electric bills.

    (Money Magazine)

Below, a few simple steps to trim your bill 30% or more.

    SAVE UP TO 10%

Clear the condenser: Prune back shrubs and ground covers at least a foot away from your outdoor air-conditioning equipment, says Charles Cormany of Beanstalk Energy, a Sonoma, Calif., residential energy efficiency contractor. Then use a blower to remove leaves and debris from in and around the case for maximum airflow.

Get a checkup: Have a technician service your central-air system every year or two.

For $100 or $200, he'll charge the refrigerant, adjust the settings to maximize efficiency, and check the insulation on the coolant pipes, says David Kyle, owner of an AC service and installation company in Lorton, Va.

    SAVE UP TO 20%

Replace filters: Install new filters at least twice a year, says Cormany. "Forget fancy, antimicrobial filters," he says. "Go for the cheapest."

They should cost less than $10 each. For window units, hand-wash and dry filters monthly.
