WINDSOR, Colo. (AP) A dozen years ago, Kristie Fisher drove up to the 13-acre property in rural Windsor with her husband and smiled. All her dreams, even her foolish ones, seemed to be coming true.
Fisher was a city girl whose parents were divorced when she was 8. She spent a lot of time in apartments. She would think about what it would be like to have room, or even a wide-open, peaceful space where car horns were muffled by the wind. Then she would dismiss those dreams as folly. That, she told herself, would never happen.
Yet there she was with her husband, with the sky above and the mountains to the west, and she could picture it all. She pictured where their new home would eventually go after they lived in the smaller house for a few years. She pictured kids riding dirt bikes and having their own adventures in the fields. She pictured her own hair salon in the basement of that new home that would allow her to work and raise her kids herself.
The dream came true. The house is there, and so is the salon, and so are the kids. Yet the dreams changed, too. They often do.
Now when you drive up past that old house, to the new one, down the long driveway, a flurry of barks greets you as your tires crunch on the gravel. Bark, bark, bark. A lab puppy wags his tail at you from his kennel. Other dogs, which look as big as miniature ponies, seem OK with you but bark just to make sure. As you approach her house, some of the barks turn into howls that echo around all that space. Fisher says hello from her hair studio, where Lola, a mastiff, greets you and starts pawing you for a pat.
Fisher needs to finish a haircut, then she needs to check on the dogs, especially the Great Dane puppies who make messes every couple of hours. It's another busy day, even with the 10 valuable volunteers who come regularly to help. And though she loves her Big Bones Canine Rescue, she will admit that as big of a part of her life as it is now, it was something she didn't picture, or even imagine, when she drove on their new property with her husband a dozen years ago.
It's safe to say her husband, Scott, didn't picture it, either, and that's part of the problem. It takes time to run a rescue organization with more than 25 dogs, even with her impressive adoption rate. It also takes money, and that's the more immediate problem. She owes her veterinarians more than $5,000.
"The rescue organization is the only thing we fight about," Fisher said and, even then, Scott helps with pouring concrete and building kennels and remodeling.
She got into rescue the way most people do, meaning she sort of stumbled into it simply because she loved animals. When she got her own place, she got three. They were all rescues. When they moved into the new house they built down the driveway six years ago, two years after her son, Gannon, now 8, was born, she turned the old place into a boarding business.
That, and doing the hair of Floss Blackburn, the founder of the Denkai Animal Sanctuary, led to taking in a few rescues herself. She and Karen Durlin started Big Bones in January 2013, just three years after her daughter, Wynsloe, now 5, came.

HUNTLEY Melanie Hartmann now has extra motivation to finish the remaining restoration work her family started 10 years ago on a two-story house with historic roots in Huntley.
Since moving to Huntley in 2004, Hartmann and her husband have worked to save the original woodwork, picture windows and even glass bathroom door knobs belonging to their century-old home along Myrtle Avenue, near downtown Huntley.
Theyve done the overhaul in waves over the years, with about 5 percent of the restoration work left that includes the trim in the upstairs hallway and bathroom, Hartmann estimates.
Im inspired again, she said. I think Ill get the five percent done this summer.
The motivational boost came from the Huntley Historic Preservation Commission, after members awarded the Hartmanns the 2014 Pride in Preservation award this week for their restoration effort.
After spending years and investing thousands into their historic home, the Hartmanns have somewhat become local historians. They possess the abstract of title, which contains handwritten and typed notes that detail the ownership of their property.
At least six families, including the Hartmanns, have occupied the home since 1910, the records indicate. It once featured an outhouse, kitchen space for a butler and dirt basement floors. It was located on 10 acres of land, which was originally sold in 1840 for around $100.
The house had gone through piecemeal renovations until the Hartmanns started restoring features and transforming it to meet their modern needs.
A self-proclaimed lover of projects, Hartmann never realized the rich country history of Huntley until she began the restoration project.
She said her family could have lived in the many subdivisions being built in Huntley in the mid-2000s. But those new millennium homes just didnt have the same feel as their historic one.

BANGKOK Thailand's coup leaders will detain former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Cabinet members and anti-government protest leaders for up to a week to give them "time to think," a military spokesman said Saturday.
The move appears aimed at preventing any political leaders from contacting supporters to rally them against the military, which seized power Thursday after months of sometimes violent street protests and deadlock between the elected government and protesters supported by Thailand's elite establishment.
Yingluck and dozens of other political figures have been held in a secret location and without outside contact since they turned themselves in for a meeting with the military council in charge of the country.
Deputy army spokesman Col. Weerachon Sukondhapatipak said that all the political leaders were being well-treated and that the aim of the military was to achieve a political compromise.
"This is in a bid for everybody who is involved in the conflict to calm down and have time to think," Weerachon said. "We don't intend to limit their freedom but it is to relieve the pressure."
The military said it acted to prevent more turmoil with the coup, which came after two days of peace talks in which neither political faction would agree to step aside in their demands.
The anti-government protesters have blocked streets in Bangkok for months demanding that the government step down over allegations of corruption and ties to Yingluck's brother, exiled ex-leader Thaksin Shinawatra, who was himself deposed in a 2006 military coup.
Parties affiliated with Yingluck and her brother Thaksin Shinawatra have won every election since 2001 in Thailand.
It was unclear Saturday exactly how many political leaders were being detained by the army.
Among the officials who showed up at an army compound in Bangkok on Friday were Yingluck, who was removed from office by a court earlier this month on nepotism charges, and her temporary replacement, Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan, according to Yingluck's aide Wim Rungwattanachinda.

Coup leaders say they will keep former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Cabinet members and anti-government protest leaders in detention.

Thailands coup leaders said onSaturday they will keep former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Cabinet members and anti-government protest leaders in detention for up to a week to give them time to think, as the junta expanded its target list to include several prominent academics.
The move appears aimed at preventing any political leaders from contacting supporters to rally them against the military, which seized power onThursday after months of sometimes violent street protests and deadlock between the elected government and protesters supported by Thailands elite establishment.
For a second day, hundreds of anti-coup protesters defied the militarys ban on large gatherings and shouted slogans and waved signs outside a Bangkok cinema. Dozens of soldiers with riot shields stood nearby but so far did not move in to stop them. Deputy army spokesperson Colonel Weerachon Sukondhapatipak said that all the detained politicians were being well-treated and that the aim of the military was to achieve a political compromise.
This is in a bid for everybody who is involved in the conflict to calm down and have time to think, Weerachon said. We dont intend to limit their freedom but it is to relieve the pressure.
The military summoned an additional 35 people including more politicians, political activists and, for the first time, outspoken academics. One of those on the latest list, Kyoto University professor of South-east Asian studies Pavin Chachavalpongpun, said by telephone from Japan he would not turn himself in. He said that the summons meant that the junta felt insecure.
Crudest form of authoritarianism The military claiming to be a mediator in the Thai conflict, that is all just nonsense, he said. This is not about paving the way for reform and democratisation. We are really going back to the crudest form of authoritarianism, he said.
Thailands key ally, the United States, on Friday suspended $3.5-million in military aid and State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said that Washington was reviewing a further $7-million in direct US assistance. The US also recommended Americans reconsider any non-essential travel to Thailand Thailands powerful military says it launched the coup to prevent more turmoil after two days of peace talks in which neither political faction would agree to step aside in their demands.

MICHAEL SPIZ was living in Everett and working in downtown Seattle. He brake-pedaled his way to work along Interstate 5 for about five years before the commute wore him down. Got him to thinking.
I wanted to find some kind of modern-looking house; something edgy but not a cube, not a box the software engineer says of his hunt for a place to buy in Seattle. I wanted a nice kitchen, good entertaining space, finishes with natural materials with minimal maintenance.
But its hard to find that kind of thing in less than 3,000 or 4,000 square feet, and I couldnt afford that.
In the course of Spizs yearlong adventures through the citys real estate offerings he passed through a few homes by Stephenson Design Collective. He found them to be creative and not excessively large. Spiz gave them a call.
I asked if they had anything else for sale. They said, Whats your budget?
Oh sure, Spiz is all smiles now. Sitting in his glass-walled living room with over-the-treetop views west from Madrona over Madison Valley (culminating in the dome of St. Joseph on Capitol Hill). I think my favorite thing is this space right here, he says. Its nice to have something thats so bright and light. (Relive his journey with Spizs homebuilding blog at viretta.blogspot.com .)
Spizs house, built by Quality Remodeling & Restoration, meets all of his requirements and then some. It is not a box at all, sitting up tall and spreading its three bedrooms and 3 baths over three floors and 2,150 square feet. Kitchen, dining and living rooms flow one to another and then out to a large deck, these spaces sharing a concrete floor. There is another 300-square-foot covered patio off the lower level of the home, and another, on the rooftop, awaits the budget go-ahead.
And edgy? The Spiz home is all over edgy, literally. The look of it is not something you see every day, or any day, really. It is cloaked in designed-to-rust Corten steel and charred cedar (charred on site). The address has been cut prominently into the steel. Access is across a steel bridge and via a passcard reader. The Corten continues inside, supporting the bamboo stairs, as the living-room ceiling (12 feet overhead) and out the back as the patio roof.
Spiz, 31, and his girlfriend, Alyssa Hays, use their creative home with flair and often. They, along with friend Nich Anderson, host jazz concerts there, charging patrons about $30 for dinner (prepared by Spiz) and a show. (Find the schedule at Jazzvox.com.) Spiz himself sings with Seattle Jazz Singers, and is, well, jazzed about sharing his home with like-minded enthusiasts.
Im still trying to figure out how much food to make. And its definitely break even or at a slight loss, he says. But I get a professional performance out of it, and other people get to come hear it, too. Thats the best.
