The William Eckhardt Research Center, which will house the astronomy and astrophysics department, the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics, the Enrico Fermi Institute, and the new Institute for Molecular Engineering, will be open for use beginning fall 2015. The building will be located on South Ellis Avenue between East 56th Street and East 57th Street, across from the Joe and Rika Mansueto Library.

A crucial component to the design of the William Eckhardt Research Center has been to tailor the building to accommodate the diverse facilities of its future occupants, according to Amy Lee, communications strategy manager for Facilities Services.

Every time [the University] brings in a new researcher, Facilities Services gets involved because were building a new home for a new researcher that will need to be tailored to meet that persons needs, Lee said.

Because of this, construction began on all stories simultaneously, as opposed to building floor by floor as is typical, to allow researchers to visit the building and discuss their specific needs with architects.

Many of the floors will be shared between departments, and each floor features collaboration spaces in which researchers across departments can interact and work together on projects. Furthermore, the collaborative Pritzker Nanofabrication Facility, part of the Institute for Molecular Engineering, will be housed in the buildings first lower level. The facility will feature a large clean room, which will filter out the majority of airborne contaminants and provide a space in which members of various departments can collaborate on innovation in nanotechnology.

The buildings two basement levels were specially designed to mitigate vibrations that would interfere with the precise measurements at an atomic level taking place there.

The interior remodeling of 5757 South University Avenue will prepare it to house parts of the Department of economics and the Becker Friedman Institute for Research in Economics. The remodeling includes the renovation and expansion of the former Chicago Theological Seminary building and the development of 58th Street into a pedestrian walkway. Faculty and staff are expected to move into the building over the summer, and classes will begin fall 2014. The project also includes the construction of a modern economic research pavilion located behind the building, which is scheduled for completion January 2015.

Toshiba expands to food production with indoor vegetable factory

    - May 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Toshiba's factory will be isolated from the outside air and have tightly controlled air and lighting systems, creating a sterile environment for the plants to grow

Looking to take a bite out of the Japanese food market, electronics giant Toshiba has announced plans to construct a vegetable production factory in the city of Yokosuka. The factory will use tightly controlled air and lighting systems to optimize conditions for indoor plant growth, the company expecting the resulting assortment of greens to yield JPY300 million (around US$3,000,000) in annual sales.

Construction of the plant is already underway, with Toshiba hoping to begin shipping products such as lettuce, baby leaf green, spinach and other vegetables as soon as July 2014. It is fitting the factory with fluorescent lighting along with an air conditioning system to keep constant temperature and moisture levels.

Toshiba's factory will be isolated from the outside air, creating a close to sterile environment within its walls. This means there is no need for pesticides and should result in a longer shelf life, with the company planning to sell on the produce to supermarkets and restaurants as vegetables rich in polyphenols and vitamin C.

Factories of this type are common throughout Japan, a country which has relied heavily on agricultural imports to meet its food requirements. By artificially controlling the environment in these factories, it is possible to produce large quantities of vegetables with a more efficient use of land, power and nutrients. Like other approaches to farming being developed for high-density areas, these factories have the potential to help cater for the food production needs of growing urban populations.

    Public cautioned against fake architects

    - May 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Regional News of Wednesday, 21 May 2014

    Source: Graphic Online

The acting Registrar of the Architects Registration Council of Ghana, Mrs Stella Arthiabah, has cautioned the public to beware of unauthorised persons, who are illegally practising architecture in the country.

She said in a statement that certain individuals and firms, though not being architects or architectural firms, presented themselves to unsuspecting clients and submitted proposals for consideration for architectural design and consultancy services.

Such practices do not only affect the proper planning and adherence to building regulations in the country but also pose great danger to our society since these individuals lack the required coaching to do proper work.

Mrs Arthiabah cited part 3, paragraph 20 of the Architects Decree 1969 (NLCD 357); Part 1, Section 6 of the National Building Regulations 1996 (LI 1630); and related legislation which make clear reference to the practice and engagement of architects and the allied professionals.

The architect is the lead design professional and has the capacity and training in the art and science of building design and the design of spaces in general.

She urged the public to engage only registered architects and architectural firms for architectural services, ensure that Statement of Work (SOW) for consultancy services was clearly stated to avoid any ambiguities, request for proof of valid practice certificates from consultants and also seek assistance from the Council or the Ghana Institute of Architects when developing SOW for building projects.

Mrs Arthiabah noted that the authorised architects had the capacity to embark on core architectural services, including project feasibility/viability studies, concept ideas development, building design and detailing, construction supervision, contract administration, project management, rehabilitation and refurbishment, conservation, interior design, landscape design, building survey and facilitating planning approvals.

The Architects Registration Council of Ghana is mandated by the Architects Decree of 1969 (NLCD 357) to control the practice of Architecture in Ghana, and prescribe and uphold standards of professional conduct and ethics of the practice in the interest of the general public.

Fund new mortgage scheme, architects urge Lagos

    - May 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Nigerian Institute of Architects on Tuesday urged the Lagos State Government to adequately fund its new Mortgage Scheme.

This is contained in a Communiqu issued at the end of the Lagos Architects Forum 5.0, signed by Mr. Ladipo Lewis, Chairman, NIA, Lagos Chapter, and its Secretary, Mr. Bayo Ogunmefun.

The forum with the theme Architecture and Real Estate Development, noted that funding the new mortgage scheme would enable the government take care of the housing deficit in the State.

There is a massive housing shortage in Lagos State for the low and medium Income classes.

This situation is caused by lack of an effective mortgage system, inadequate provision of finance and difficult access to land.

We believe that funding the new scheme will help the low and medium income earners in both the formal and the informal sectors of the economy, the communiqu said.

It also urged the State Government to make procurement of Certificates of Occupancy and Governors Consents easy.

The communiqu said that the State Government should either adopt the National Building Code or evolve its own State Code, to stem building failure and collapse.

It suggested that the state should put in place policies that would encourage continuous development of quality Hotels of various standards.

The communiqu said that this was necessary because of the mega-city status of Lagos and its economic importance in the country and the West African Sub-Region.
