Dimensional shingles, also known as architectural or laminated shingles, are becoming increasingly popular. These shingles are similar to regular three tab asphalt (or composition) shingles, but have two layers of shingle material bonded together rather than a single layer. The exposure of the top layer of shingles has random notches taken out, and the bottom layer is adhered to the top layer. This gives architectural shingles a scattered, three dimensional look to the roof, with different high and low tabs. But like regular three tab, they are still topped with a layer of granules for protection against weathering, and the base mats are between two layers of stabilized asphalt.

An inmate who died at Rikers Island after swallowing a soap ball of detergent spit blood on his jail cell window in a desperate plea for help, claims a man who says he was in the next cell.

But correction officers ignored Jason Echevarria, 25, Allen Turner says in a written account of the incident he shared with the Daily News.

I did hear him say that he was bleeding so I told him to spit it on the window, Turner says. Maybe then that will get someones attention.

Correction Officer Raymond Castro was fired, while Capt. Terrence Pendergrass was arrested in March. He was charged in Manhattan Federal Court with violating Echevarria's civil rights by denying him medial treatment.

The 2012 death was ruled a homicide.

Robert Kelner, a lawyer for Echevarrias family, said Turners story describes a situation that never should have occurred and never should happen again.

Echevarrias family is suing both Castro and Pendergrass.

A lawyer for Pendergrass didn't return a request for comment.

Rather than relying on the completely unsubstantiated claims made by a convicted felon, we believe the facts of this case will demonstrate Officer Castros innocence, said his lawyer, Liam Castro.

Turner says the trouble started when Echevarria flooded his own cell in the unit for inmates with mental health issues because he did not want to be in the box.

Erma Love guided me into the family room basement of her Gary home, shook her head out of frustration, and let out a long sigh.

You see that? asked Love, 71, pointing to obvious water damage along the baseboards.

And that? she asked, pointing to soiled furniture in a basement bedroom.

And that? she asked again, opening up a broken closet door. Nobody wants to take responsibility for any of this mess.

Love and her husband, Ernest, have lived on Louisiana Street, just off 5th Avenue, for more than four decades. They didnt have sewage backup problems until last year, they told me.

In October, sewage backed up into their basement causing extensive water damage, lost furniture and hefty costs to rehab the family room and adjoining rooms.

I paid $1,200 to get it done, plus another $400 to the Roto-Rooter man, Love said.

A few of her neighbors also have suffered similar sewage backup problems since the fall.

Every time it rains, we have to put on our worry faces, Love said while dragging out items from her basement on yet another rainy day.

Charlottes tree-planting goals and proposed state legislation that could undermine local tree ordinances were focuses of the third annual tree canopy summit on Monday.

Hosted by the public-private collaborative partnership TreesCharlotte, the meeting at Freedom Park drew representatives of 30 organizations.

In its first two years, TreesCharlotte has planted about 11,000trees through partnership with schools, the Charlotte Housing Authority and other entities. Its goal is to plant 15,000 trees a year, all paid for with private money.

Charlotte City Council, noting a decline in the leafy cover, has set its own goal: a tree canopy over 50 percent of the citys area by 2050. The canopy is now at 47 percent, according to a 2012 analysis, but has shown no net decline since 2008.

What were really trying to do is build community with such goals, City Manager Ron Carlee told the group. We want to build a place where people will want to live.

The canopy goal is ambitious because development will continue to take some trees, and aging trees will die. One percent of the citys tree canopy equals 100,000 trees.

A bill that is expected to come before legislators this year, meanwhile, has drawn attention from tree lovers.

A draft of the bill bans local ordinances that regulate the removal, replacement and preservation of trees on private property and would prohibit local tree ordinances such as Charlottes.

Legislators cited Charlottes $4,700 fine of a church in 2011 for improperly trimming crape myrtle trees as evidence of overreach by local regulators.

In the great crush of commuting, New Yorkers don't always have time to stop and appreciate the art of the subway system, one of the world's largest. The detailed mosaic tile work that serves to identify each station is rarely celebrated. Here to change that is freelance art director Adam Chang. On the website NY Train Project, he highlights the beauty of New York City's subway signage in all its grimy, piss-stained glory.

Chang's goal is to catalogue the signs of every MTA subway station, organized on the site by each different line. Each station has a factoid, like when it opened, what long-forgotten features it once had or what film or music video it has appeared in--for instance, the 23rd Street 2 train station gets destroyed in the 1998 version of Godzilla.

"One day while waiting for the 6 train at the Bleecker stop, I began to notice the intricate details of the carefully placed tiles in the station sign. Which led me to noticing other station signs and how they were all different, infused with the personality of the neighborhood," Chang explains on the site. "I decided that I wanted to share this with others by creating an online gallery of subways stations in NYC, starting with Manhattan."

So far, Chang has covered 118 stations, largely in Manhattan, riding the train for a total of 20 hours.
