Wire fences booby-trapped with beehives are being built in five African countries to prevent elephants from raiding farms, while also providing local people with honey.
'Beehive fences' are now being put up in Botswana, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda by UK charity Save the Elephant, says Lucy King, leader of the Elephants and Bees Project in Kenya and they are already in use at three communities in Kenya.
The project, which is a collaboration between Save the Elephants, the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom and the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, studies how to use the African bush elephants' instinctive avoidance of African honey bees to avoid crop losses.
King says conflicts between farmers and elephants are a growing problem, with the animals' encroachment onto farms causing massive crop losses.
But she tells SciDev.Net that it is easy to construct simple beehive fences using local materials.
"Hives are hung every 30 feet and linked together," says King. "If an elephant touches one of the hives or the interconnecting wires, the beehives all along the fence swing and release the stinging insects."
She says that a pilot study she led involving 34 farms on the edge of two farming communities in northern Kenya found beehive fences to be an effective elephant deterrent compared with traditional thorn bush barriers.
King says that in the study, which was published in 2011 in the African Journal of Ecology, elephants made 14 attempts to enter farmland and 13 of these were unsuccessful. In each case the elephants were forced to turn away from the area after confronting a beehive fence or walk the length of the fence to choose an easier entry point through a thorn bush.
Only once did elephants break through a beehive fence to eat crops, according to the paper.
More than a decade ago, research found that elephants avoid feeding on acacia trees with beehives in them, says King. "This was followed by behavioural experiments demonstrating that not only do elephants run from bee sounds, but they also have an alarm call that alerts family members to retreat from a possible bee threat," she says.

Granderson was hitting .141 at home with one home run and is hitting .279 on the road with four home runs two of those coming in those previous two games at Yankee Stadium. A challenger in the Ward 2 Fremont City Council race was the top vote getter in Tuesdays primary election.
Unofficial results listed Steve Landholm with 419 votes (39.01 percent). He and incumbent Mark Stange and will advance to the general election.
Stange earned 331 votes (30.82 percent).
Challenger Vern Kucera had 320 votes (29.80 percent).
Landholm was amazed and pleased with the results.
Im really tickled with the fact that its going like that, he said when election results indicated that he will be competing in the general election. I really dont know what to say. Im kind of flabbergasted to be honest.
Were going to see what happens now in the fall, he said.
Landholm, who has been an electrician since 1971, said hes always wanted to be involved in government. Now that he plans to retire, Landholm believes he can put full emphasis on being a council member.
He is an advocate for improvements at Fremont Municipal Airport. Landholmhas said he would like to see work accelerated for the 23rd Street viaduct. He said the illegal immigration vote influenced his decision to run and that hed like to see people be happy with their local government again.
A certified public accountant for 25 years, Stange has said he has a high degree of understanding of financial statements and how bond issues work and about working with a budget.

East Providence Police Department is warning the public about a familiar scam.
Police say you should watch out for someone offering to pave your driveway at a discount. The person may say they have extra asphalt, but police say there's no such thing.
According to police, suddenly people and equipment may appear on the victims property, and then the con-artist claims a mistake was made and the victim ends up owing thousands of dollars. Police say the invoice won't include a company name and the person may try to escort the victim to the bank.
NBC 10 called East Providence Wednesday night and were told at least one report of such an incident in that city.
