The idea of buying and restoring a heritage home can either evoke romantic feelings of nostalgia or recurring feelings of fear depending, on your point of view.

Welcome to the nebulous but fascinating world of buying a heritage home.

Looking for definite regulations or designations when restoring a heritage home is a bit like trying to sort out the past. It takes a certain dedication and determination and love of the hunt.

So what is a heritage home? Perhaps surprisingly, there are no hard and fast rules about just how old a heritage home must be to earn the title. None.

While the Greater Vancouver Real Estate board suggests any home 60 years and older can be a heritage home, among historians, there are other factors.

Variables such as who built the home, who owned it, and what kind of wood or design they chose are just as vital as its age.

"A house tells a story about when it was originally built," says Lisa Zosiak, Maple Ridge's planning department liaison on the Maple Ridge Community Heritage Commission.

"When people restore or preserve the house, they are revealing that story again."

SAN ANGELO, Texas The Tom Green County Commissioners Court approved the overtime of some county employees to help shuffle through and destroy records in the county clerks annex archives, making room to store criminal case records.

With the remodeling of the Edd B. Keyes building, about 500 to 600 boxes of criminal records have been moved a few times and need to find a permanent home, said Sheri Woodfin, district clerk.

Woodfin said staff members who are familiar with records will help identify which annex records can be transferred from paper documentation into microfilm or images.

The cost is between $2,500 to $5,000, depending on how many work and how much they work, Woodfin said. We have a cap of $10,000 from the records management fund.

Woodfin said the plan coincides with an order passed by the Texas Supreme Court that mandates electronic filing in civil cases including family and probate cases by attorneys in appellate courts, district courts, statutory county courts, constitutional county courts and statutory probate courts.

Woodfin said that under the mandate, counties with populations of 100,000 to 150,000 such as Tom Green County are scheduled to have the change take effect by January.

Moving criminal records to the annex will help create a permanent place for them, and e-filing of family and civil records is the next step in becoming a paperless court, Woodfin said.

In other news, the court voted to continue the countywide burn ban because of high temperatures and the potential for critical fire weather conditions.

Ply Gem Takes New PVC Trim and Mouldings Nationwide

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - Amtrak said Tuesday that it is suspending westbound rail service from Fargo on its Empire Builder line for four months and that passengers traveling on to Grand Forks, Devils Lake and Rugby will have to complete their journeys on buses.

Amtrak said in a statement that the suspension of service is so that BNSF Railway Co. can make repairs to the line, which BNSF owns and Amtrak uses. The repairs are expected to last through Sept. 30.

Passengers traveling to Grand Forks, Devils Lake and Rugby will get off the train in Fargo and take a bus to their destination stations. Passengers who want to head west from the three affected cities will be taken to Minot, where they will board the westbound train.

Eastbound traffic will maintain its usual route along the states northern tier.

BNSF is investing $400 million in infrastructure in the state. This includes three siding projects between Grand Forks and Minot and four siding projects between Fargo and Grand Forks. Other work along the route involves installation of new turnouts, high speed surfacing and shoulder ballast cleaning, replacement of ties, rail relay and signal upgrades.

BNSF said the detour will allow crews to speed up the repairs between Fargo and Minot.

Amtrak said it has notified passengers and public officials about the detour. The companys president and CEO, Joe Boardman, will visit the affected area this week to discuss the delays with North Dakota leaders.

Local community and business leaders prize the Empire Builder and see Amtrak service as an important public transportation link, DJ Stadtler, Amtraks vice president of operations, said in a statement. BNSF needs to speed repairs and upgrades in order to return the Empire Builder to its previous reliability as fast as possible.
