South Highland Fire Started In Shop With Non-Working Sprinkler System

    - May 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - We are learning new information Monday about a weekend fire in the University of Memphis area.

The building where the fire started didn't have a working sprinkler system.

Firefighters were called to the two alarm fire in the 500 block of South Highland around 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Flames tore through a building that housed Signature T-Shirt Shop and Division 9 Flooring.

More than 80 firefighters spent two hours fighting the fire.

Three of those firefighters were sent to the hospital with injuries. They're expected to be okay.

Witnesses said the smoke and flames could be seen for miles.

It was incredible and not in a good way. I mean and it was absolutely just monstrous and when I came back outside for a second you could see the sun was completed backed out because of how thick the smoke was and it kept blowing down the street. It was the craziest fire I have ever seen, witness Alexandra Howard said.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

No word on the cost of the damage.

Men's Cree project is a lifeline to many in County Durham

12:20am Tuesday 6th May 2014 in News By Lizzie Anderson

Friendship and a listening ear are at the heart of a health and wellbeing scheme that brings together men of all backgrounds. Lizzie Anderson reports.

The garden shed has long been seen as a male retreat, a place to escape the pressures of everyday life. But what happens if you expand the concept, bringing men of all ages and backgrounds into the same shed? According to Malcolm Fallow, the chief executive of East Durham Trust, the benefits are immeasurable. In 2010, the trust launched Cree, a mens health and wellbeing project based on an Australian scheme called Mens Sheds. The idea is that if you provide a place for men to come together - be it shed or a community centre - friendships will be formed, confidence boosted and skills shared.

From eight pilot schemes, the project has grown to include 32 groups across County Durham. Cree is particularly successful in isolated communities, with high unemployment, poor public transport links and few amenities.

Ex-pit villages are a good example, as Malcolm explains: In the North-East a lot of men worked at the coal and steel works. These industries were surrounded by an infrastructure of working mens clubs and miners welfare halls, where men could socialise and discuss any problems they had.

Many collieries had their own football teams and brass bands too. When we lost the industry, we also lost this social network. Cree aims to fill this gap.

Each Cree offers activities, ranging from archery and paintballing; to arts and crafts, cookery and woodwork. Many men simply go for the activities or to make new friends in a similar vein to the Womens Institute or a sports club. However, for those who have experienced mental health problems, the project is a lifeline.

The trust, a community sector support organisation, introduced Cree as part of a Public Health initiative commissioned by Durham County Council aimed at preventing suicide. It followed a sharp rise in suspected suicides across the county, with the recession cited as a possible cause. Last December, a suicide audit presented to the councils adult health and wellbeing overview and scrutiny committee confirmed this. It revealed the number of suicides per 100,000 deaths was significantly higher in County Durham than in England as a whole. Male suicide rates also rose steadily in the county between 2006 and 2010. The latest figures are more encouraging, showing a sharp decline in male suicides from 2010.

John Carruthers, of Trimdon Village, credits the Trimdon Station Cree with saving his life. When John, 46, joined the Friday morning group at the community centre, it was the first time he had left the house in 19 years. At the time, he was on the verge of taking his own life after the Governments welfare reforms led him to be assessed as fit to work.

    Etihad Airways adds three-room suite

    - May 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

How swanky can first-class travel on a commercial airline get?

Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, will soon let passengers book a three-room suite with a living room, bedroom, bathroom and shower. Also included: a personal butler, trained at the Savoy Butler Academy in London.

"This is unheard of for a commercial airline," said Raymond Kollau an analyst at Airlinetrends.com. "At $20,000 for a single journey it is aimed at dignitaries and high net-worth individuals on the Abu Dhabi to London, Paris and New York routes, which are among the very few routes where such 'beyond first' class will meet demand."

"The Residence" will be available on the airline's new A380 airplanes in a 125-square-foot cabin on the forward upper-deck. Available for single or double occupancy, each Residence will have Ferrari-quality leather, table marquetry, custom carpets, a two-seat reclining sofa and an 82-inch-long double bed.

"The new Residence calls into question just how much pandering to the super rich is enough," said aviation journalist Christine Negroni, author of the forthcoming book "CRASHED: What the World's Most Mysterious Airplane Disasters Teach Us About Design, Technology, and Human Performance."

"That said, at $20,000, the super-luxe three-room suite actually is cheaper than flying the same route in a private plane, so maybe for the bargain-hunting billionaire, the Residence may be just the ticket," Negroni said.

In addition to the Residence cabin, Etihad on Sunday also introduced the First Apartment for A380 passengers in the first-class cabin.

Iowa schools urged to build safe rooms

    - May 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Mike Wiser, Gazette-Lee Des Moines Bureau

DES MOINES More schools should have severe weather safe rooms, the head of Iowas emergency department said Monday.

Mark Schouten, director of Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management, told reporters there arent enough buildings outfitted with special rooms that can withstand high impacts. He spoke during a news conference on severe weather preparedness.

Clearly, it is an important thing to keep our schoolchildren safe in event of a tornado or other severe weather, he said. It is something we are promoting, and I expect you will see more safe rooms in the future.

The department makes money available for school districts that want to construct safe rooms, which the Federal Emergency Management Agency defines as a hardened structure specifically designed to meet the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) criteria and provide near-absolute protection in extreme weather events, including tornadoes and hurricanes.

According to FEMA regulations, rooms should be designed to withstand winds of 250 mph and be able to resist a 15-pound 2x4 board traveling at 100 mph horizontally and 67 mph vertically.

Homeland Security Department spokeswoman Stefanie Bond wrote in an e-mail the department has helped pay for or set money aside for 40 tornado safe-room projects, which includes projects in 33 school districts. Of the projects, 32 of the 40 are complete.

The cost for all 40 projects is $42 million.

If a school/district has constructed a safe room that wasnt funded by us, its not on this list (although I am not aware if there are any that havent been funded through us), Bond wrote.

Gov. Terry Branstad said although the state doesnt provide additional funding for school safe rooms, districts that want to build them should look at the federal funding distributed through the state Homeland Security department.

Orders lift U.S. service companies as sales improve

    - May 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Services, the biggest chunk of the U.S. economy, picked up in April as gains in orders and sales signaled even faster growth ahead.

The Institute for Supply Managements nonmanufacturing index rose to 55.2, the highest level since August, from 53.1 in March, the report showed Monday. Readings above 50 indicate expansion.

Retailers, restaurants and construction companies were among the 14 industries reporting growth last month as the worlds biggest economy rebounds from a weak first quarter. Increased hiring sets the stage for stronger consumer spending that will benefit companies such as United Parcel Service Inc.

Its a solid report, consistent with what we saw in the April employment numbers and in manufacturing, said Joseph LaVorgna, chief U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank Securities in New York, who projected a reading of 55. The economy is emerging nicely from the winter doldrums.

Confidence is building, Anthony Nieves, chairman of the survey, said on a conference call with reporters. Employment has to increase in this sector if business keeps growing.

The ISM nonmanufacturing survey covers an array of industries including utilities, retailing and health care. It also encompasses construction and agriculture.

It paints a better picture of the economy, said Kathleen Bostjancic, an economist at Oxford Economics USA in New York. We have a decent pace of job growth. It boosts confidence and will support consumer spending.

The figures show the U.S. expansion is strengthening, while China cools and Europe struggles to pick up. Chinese manufacturing contracted for a fourth month in April, according to figures from HSBC Holdings Plc and Markit.

Demand is getting a boost as more Americans find work. Labor Department figures last week showed Americas job-creation machine kicked into higher gear in April. The 288,000 gain in payrolls exceeded the median forecast in a Bloomberg survey and followed a 203,000 advance in March. The unemployment rate fell to 6.3 percent, the lowest level since September 2008.

The economy has started the quarter with a lot of momentum, said Markus Schomer, chief economist at PineBridge Investments LLC in New York. We have moderate but accelerating growth, inflation is no longer falling, and the Federal Reserve is expected to keep rates very low for a very long time.
