Demolition underway in FEMA buyout project

    - April 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This section displays the last 50 news articles that were published.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Demolition started Monday in Binghamton as part of the FEMA buyout project.

It's all part of the cleanup effort after the 2011 flooding. Eighteen homes on the city's south side are the first to be demolished.

According to Mayor Rich David, the FEMA project is the last major financial step for homeowners. He hopes the demolition will provide closure.

"These were residents of the city for Binghamton, these were members of our community who were devastated by the 2011 flood, they lost they're belongings, and their possessions and now they're home. This is the end of a very long process," said David.

All-Around Excavating of Johnson City will continue the demolition over the next month. Once the homes are cleared, the city will look into future use for the properties.

China's Demolition Of Sanjiang Church Prompts Fears Of Crackdown On Christians

    - April 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fears of an impending crackdown on Christians are sweeping China as the demolition begins of a controversial Wenzhou church that worshippers had earlier formed a human shield in order to protect.

Earlier this month, distraught members of the 1,000-strong congregation in the city of Sanjiang formed a protective circle around the church last month in a last ditch attempt to protect it from the bulldozers, but withdrew after a negotiations with the government appeared to have been successful.

But the deal appears to have collapsed in recent days, and photos on social media on Monday appear to show demolition teams have swiftly moved in to begin work on the lavish building, tearing down sections of its exterior walls. The site is now heavily guarded by military trucks and police vans.

Today the Wenzhou Sanjiang church is being demolished, where will our more than 1,000 believers gather after this? Why tear down our church? Caoyuan Zhibing posted on Sina Weibo, according to a translation by AFP

Christian Today reported that the dispute was not over religion but planning permission, with the church having "erected a building far larger than they had permission to build".

Granted permission to build a space for worship on about half an acre, the congregation instead built a two-acre church and annex.

Though the Chinese authorities may say this is a dispute over practicalities, the Telegraph reported there are now Communist Party plans to at least partially demolish at least 10 other places of worship.

Bob Fu, a US-based Christian activist, told the paper: This government-orchestrated barbaric forced demolition represents a serious escalation against religious freedom in Zhejiang. The Chinese regime chooses to disregard its own laws and the will of its best citizens.

Fu, president of the Texas-based group China Aid, said it could lead to a renewed interest in Christianity in China, as a method of resistance. History has proved and will prove again with this case that another church revival will happen after this new wave of persecution," he said.

The China Christian Council estimates the country has around 20 million Christians, not including Catholics 70% of them living in rural areas. Many more could be worshipping as part of underground movements.

Environmentalists upset over move to construct wall in Valangkulam

    - April 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Environmentalists have taken objection to the Coimbatore Corporations move to construct a wall in Valangkulam to prevent inundation of houses of those who live along Vincent Road.

According to K. Mohan Raj, secretary, Save Coimbatore Wetlands, the civic body constructing the wall in the tank will pave the way for more encroachments.

Already considerable tank space has been eaten away by people who have encroached upon the area to construct houses.

The retaining wall will only legitimise their construction and allow more such structures.

The increased occupation will result in more sewage flowing into the tank. As if on cue, the Corporation is constructing the wall with pipelines to convey the sewage into the tank.

He says that though there is nothing wrong in the civic body constructing the wall, it should have removed the encroachments first and then constructed the wall.

If done so, it would have prevented encroachments.

The civic body is constructing the wall for 250 feet at Rs. 42 lakh to prevent the Valangkulam waters from flowing into the houses there. The rationale the Corporation provided for constructing the wall is that the residents were the first to get affected whenever it rained in the area or whenever the water level in the tank rose.

Sources in the Coimbatore Corporation say that it is factually incorrect to say that the civic body is constructing the compound in the tank and that it has allowed encroachments.

The survey records clearly establish that abutting Vincent Road on the east is private land, where the people have built houses. At the eastern end of the land is a Corporation road and only thereafter the tank boundary starts.
