Turns out Thomas Wolfe was wrong: you can go home again.
So declared Frances Mayes, who returned to the South in 2007 to live in Hillsborough, N.C., after decades of exile in California and Italy (the latter serving as a beguiling setting for several memoirs, including Under the Tuscan Sun).
Its changed drastically, in most ways for the better, Mayes said of the South, counting greater racial and gender equality among them. But I feel a deep familiarity, too.
It is the past, not the present, that fuels her new memoir, Under Magnolia, which poignantly recounts her upbringing in Georgia.
Recently Mayes talked about places that played significant roles in her childhood, from her hometown, Fitzgerald, to Georgias verdant barrier islands. The following are edited excerpts from the conversation.
Q: Is there any place from your childhood you return to often?
A: That whole string of islands, the Golden Isles of Georgia, is a favorite of mine. Theyre spectacular: marshes on one side, wide sandy beaches on the other. As a child I loved Jekyll Island. It was a playground for Northern robber barons, but after World War II it was largely abandoned. So there were all of these beautiful, deserted, shingled mansions, which were oddly enough called cottages. It was a mysterious place for a child to explore. Now a lot of the houses have been restored, and the Jekyll Island Club, which was private, is now a hotel. Its a very gracious place to stay, with croquet courts, a swimming pool, enormous moss-strewn oak trees.
I absolutely love Little St. Simons Island, which is a private island, and has only one place to stay, the Lodge on Little St. Simons Island. Id say its comfortably rustic, but what makes it so special is that its a 7-mile beach with no one on it. To paddle around in the marshes, alone privacy is the ultimate luxury to me.
Q: You grew up in Fitzgerald. Any reason for a tourist to pass through?
A: Im not sure if it would hold as much interest to a tourist as it does to me, but its nice just to ride around and see how its laid out. It was built by soldiers, Northern and Southern, after the War between the States, as a colony dedicated to reunifying the country. Many of the streets in the town center are named for Northern and Southern generals, and the towns four borders are named after Southern and Northern battleships. Even the cemetery is laid out like the Battle of Gettysburg. It has one bizarre aspect: This particular breed of exotic chicken roams the town freely, which means you cant sleep beyond 6 a.m. because theyre making so much racket.

CHERRY HILL An unsuspecting visitor to the Crowne Plaza Hotel did not have to spend much time looking around before realizing that these friendly, if oddly dressed, people were not the ordinary Cherry Hill crowd.
The place was abuzz Saturday with Trekkies, more than 1,200, who gathered for Creation Entertainment's Official Star Trek Convention, a three-day event that ends Sunday.
They weren't just playing the part of the Starship U.S.S. Enterprise enthusiasts. They were wearing it, reveling in it, encouraging it to course through their veins as though the sci-fi series were a life force all its own.
For these fans, it is.
The first clue was a man wearing a T-shirt with the message "U looking for Tribble?" That's a reference to Tribbles, the soft, furry, creatures that starred in one of the most beloved Star Trek episodes, "The Trouble With Tribbles."
The next clue was nearby in the hotel lobby, where there was a gathering, in full regalia, of members of the Imperial Klingon Forces, an international nonprofit that has, according to its business card, "proudly served the Empire and local Communities with honor and glory since 1994."
Sitting with them was Jim Macintyre, 64, of Butler, N.J. At least, that's what the muffled voice said from within the full-body costume, which included a rocky, silicone face and a large, silver interstellar weapon.
Macintyre said he was "a member of a species with the misfortune of evolving on the Klingon-Gorn border. We're the people who talked the Klingons and Gorns into a nonaggression pact so they could cross borders" to visit their loved ones.

As preliminary work begins on the site earmarked for the construction of a refinery by the Dangote Group as well as the springing up of other business ventures in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, prices of land in the area have drastically increased, MAUREEN AZUH writes
The prices of land in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State have risen considerably since the Dangote Group indicated interest in building a refinery in the area.
Although preliminary work, including clearing of the site, has barely begun, the prices of land in the areas surrounding the Lekki Free Trade Zone have gone up by over 900 per cent.
The Chairman, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, had in 2013 disclosed plans to build a 400,000-barrel-per-day crude oil refinery, and subsequently awarded the contract to an Indian company, Engineers India Limited.
Notwithstanding the presence of other companies in the area, such as Raffle Oil LFTZ Enterprises, Obat Oil, Progress Marine Limited, a shipping company that has also bought hundreds of hectares of land in the area for its tank farm development, Eko Resort and a few others, the proposed refinery is expected to signal the commencement of the multi-billion naira investment in the zone.
At the groundbreaking of the refinery, Governor Babatunde Fashola had said the LFTZ was beginning to take shape with the coming of investors.
Tank farms and major refineries are springing up to service the demands of the country and make room for export. The refineries create a major selling point and release of the opportunities that lie ahead in this zone, create opportunities for the local people and the potential for Lagos and the Nigerian economy, the governor had said.
According to findings by our correspondent, the current opportunity for the local people is coming in the form of the soaring land prices.
Some of the residents said over 3,000 plots of land, stretching from the access road towards the lagoon, were acquired for the Dangote refinery.
An indigene of the area and a resident of Okuraye, Mr. Daniel Adeyanju, who spoke with our correspondent on the development, said some plots of land that were selling between N200,000 and N300,000 before the advent of the refinery, were now going for as much as N3m.
