Build a rain garden, help the environment, get a reward.
Its a simple as that.
The federal Peconic Estuary Program, which was created 20 years ago to improve water quality in the Peconics, will offer rewards of up to $500 to residents in Southolds Hashamomuck Pond watershed area and the Reeves Bay watershed in Flanders who work to combat groundwater pollution by installing rain gardens, rain barrels or other forms of conservation landscaping on their properties.
This summer, the Peconic Estuary Program plans to install rain garden demonstration projects near Hashamomuck Pond and at one of the buildings at Big Duck Park in Flanders to draw attention to the program.
So, your first question is probably Whats a rain garden? And thats likely followed by Whats a rain barrel?
The nonprofit environmental organization Group for the South Fork teamed up with local Girl Scouts Saturday to provide answers at Downs Farm Preserve in Cutchogue, on the grounds of the old Ford Corchaug Indian archeological sites.
A rain garden is a very specific garden, said Missy Weiss, an environmental educator for Group for the South Fork and program manager at the preserve. Its not something you would plant in your backyard if its a flat area, Ms. Weiss said. A rain garden would be used if you had a slight slope in your lawn, so that stormwater runoff naturally will flow into the ground and be filtered by a collection of native plants.

Stormwater runoff is often cited as a major source of surface and groundwater pollution because it carries pollutants like fuel and animal waste from streets and into the water.

Cleaning the bays with conservation landscaping
The seeds will be planted this spring and fall, but the prairie at Benson Park isnt expected to flourish for two years.
Perhaps sixty types of grass and flowers should grow here after herbicides and fire eliminate the weeds that now dominate the 20-acre site. Once its roots run deep, a prairie can take care of itself, but invasive weeds like Reed canary grass and Canada thistle can cast a deadly shadow over a nascent prairie.
This will be the second attempt at establishing a prairie in Benson Park, which saw its first seeding in 2010. In the years since, the prairie plants lost the tug-of-war that theyve lost so many times before since invasive species appeared here.
By last summer, the invasive perennial Canada thistle had taken over the park.
Its not clear why, though a request from the North Mankato City Council to reduce the use of herbicide on the park may have played a role in the thistles dominance. Chemicals were applied to the weeds in places, but it apparently was not enough.
Whatever the cause, so few prairie plants remained from the original planting that a Department of Natural Resources expert recommends starting over.
In 2010, the city paid a private contractor, Monarch Wildlife Systems, at least $14,336 in local sales tax funding to do the plantings and some of the weed control.
The company is apparently out of business, and its Secretary of State filings expired in 2011. Its former owner or manager, Jeff Henry, didnt return multiple voicemails.
The DNR prairie expert, Randy Schindle, has helped establish more than a thousand acres of prairie around the state. He said the prairies failure doesnt necessarily mean that Monarch made a mistake.
Every prairie is different and even an experienced ecological engineer can watch a fledgling prairie go out of control, Schindle said.

Late Saturday Microsoft revealeda vulnerability in all versions of Internet Explorer that is being used in "limited, targeted attacks."They are investigating the vulnerability and exploit and have not yet determined what action they will take in response or when.
All versions of Internet Explorer from 6 through 11 are listed as vulnerable as well as all supported versions of Windows other than Server Core. Windows Server versions on which IE is run in the default Enhanced Security Configuration are not vulnerable unless an affected site is placed in the Internet Explorer Trusted sites zone.
The vulnerability was reported to Microsoft by research firm FireEye.FireEye says that, while the vulnerability affects all versions of IE, the attack is specific to versions 9, 10 and 11. It is a "use after free" attack in which memory objects in the browser are manipulated after being released. The attack bypasses both DEP (Data Execution Prevention) and ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization).
The specific exploit, according to FireEye, uses an Adobe Flash SWF file to manipulate the heap with a technique calledheap feng shui. Neither Microsoft nor FireEye says it, but this implies that systems without Flash installed are not vulnerable to the specific exploit, although they are to the underlyng vulnerability in Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer 10 and 11 come with Flash embedded, so they are vulnerable by default.
EMET, the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit, will also make it more difficult to exploit this vulnerability.
