Undergoing renovation: Work continues to progress on three Enid Public Schools buildings

    - April 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ENID, Okla. Drivers along West Garriott readily can see the building just south of Enid Public Schools Central Office is undergoing renovation.

Thats because work is progressing on three EPS building renovations that are separate from the $99-plus million bond issue projects undertaken since 2010.

The three-building renovation project got under way in August when school board members approved a $4.13 million bid from Reeder General Contractors, Oklahoma City, for renovations to the school districts Administrative Services Center, Information Technology Service Center and Support Services Center.

In addition to the building alongside Garriott that will house the districts administrative services, a second building lying just west of the current Central Office is undergoing renovation to become the Information Technology Service Center.

The Support Services Center, located at the old Cleveland Elementary School building, 1305 S. Adams, houses the property, maintenance, transportation and skilled maintenance departments.

Work on the Support Services Center and Information Technology buildings is nearly complete. A walk-though inspection is scheduled for May 5 to see what needs touched up before the final move-in, said Karl White, chief financial officer and interim superintendent for EPS.

Jeff Herbel, information technology director for EPS, said hes eager for the fast-approaching day the IT department moves into its own building.

The network operating center is now here, Herbel said, opening the door to a room full of computer equipment. It used to be in the closet in the building next door.

Interesting aspects of the buildings past lives were uncovered during the demolition phase, Herbel said. The building used to be the hub of Enids early horse-drawn trolley transportation system.

This was originally built to house the horses and trolleys, Herbel said. When we started to demolish inside, the stable doors were uncovered. Theyd been bricked over.

HomeAdvisor Releases Home Project Data from the Quarterly Trend Report

    - April 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Golden, CO (PRWEB) April 25, 2014

HomeAdvisor released today the Home Repair, Maintenance and Improvement Quarterly Trend Report for the first quarter of 2014. The data* provides trends for the type of home projects that homeowners are planning, budgeting for and completing. Reports are available on a national level as well as regionally in Chicago, Dallas, Boston, Denver and Sacramento.

In the first quarter, 46.6 percent of the requests nationally were for additions and remodeling projects with homeowners most commonly requesting bathroom remodels, kitchen remodels and building home additions. Of the cities data was collected from, Dallas had the highest percentage of additions and remodeling requests (43.5%) with projects including bathroom remodels, upholstering furniture and building home additions.

More than half of the projects requested nationally focused on repair and maintenance projects (53.4%). Top tasks include replacing faucets, fixtures or pipes, installing or replacing electrical switches and installing or replacing shingle roofing. Of the cities data was collected from, Boston had the highest percentage of repair and maintenance projects requested (65.6%).

First quarter home improvement trends for 2014 are encouraging for the home improvement industry, said HomeAdvisors CEO Chris Terrill. While repairs and maintenance dominate the number of projects being requested, additions and remodels follow closely behind, suggesting a strong year for home improvement.

The most common style for interior design trends was a traditional style (43%) and the kitchen (23%) was the most common room that homeowners were looking to design. Most homeowners spent less than $20,000 on their home projects (57.2%) and most projects were being completed on less than 200 square feet of their home (63%).

The data was collected from 400,000 service requests received through HomeAdvisor.com from January to March of 2014. The data was divided in two categories: additions and remodels or maintenance and repairs. Additional information was provided by HomeAdvisors homeowner tools: Cost Guide and DesignMine. Cost Guide provides the average cost locally and nationally of more than 800 home projects. DesignMine is an interior design tool that helps homeowners build and share personalized design boards before being matched with a professional to bring their vision to life.

Grant aids the rehabilitation of more homes in Batavia

    - April 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The City has been awarded another grant in the amount of $400,000 for housing rehabilitation projects over the next two years. The Community Development Block Grant is from the NYS Office of Community Renewal.

The first housing rehabilitation grant the City received was in 2010 for the same amount, which led to successfully rehabilitating 19 homes. Major projects completed in many of the homes included roof repair/replacement, porch repair/replacement, heating, plumbing, electrical, masonry work, window and door replacement, siding and gutters.

Nearly all of the rehabilitation work in 2010 was performed by Genesee County contractors, keeping local dollars in the community, City Manager Jason Molino said.

The program will assist single family, owner occupied homeowners to upgrade their properties. Assistance will be provided in the form of grants, up to $24,500, for the cost of home improvements. It is estimated that the program will be able to assist 15-18 homeowners with needed repairs.

This is another $400,000 that will be invested in City housing stock and contributing towards revitalizing our neighborhoods. This is a great opportunity for our community and I look forward to another successful program, City Council President Brooks Hawley said.

This grant is city wide and income eligible property owners may apply. The city expects to start working with property owners within the next 90 days and would expect the program funding to be committed by the end of the summer of 2015. Home repairs should be completed within a year of when the funds are committed, Molino said.

Anyone interested in applying for the grant program should call the Office of the City Manager at (585) 345-6330 and have your name added to the list. Once the office receives the necessary paperwork from NY State, the people on the list will be contacted to fill out applications. Recipients will be chosen from those who meet the necessary criteria and whose earnings have been verified. The income requirements are based on HUD guidelines for Genesee County.

Aside from the 2010 CDBG award the City also received a $450,000 grant in 2011 from the New York Main Street program to assist 10 downtown building owners that have invested more than $1.2 million in downtown buildings including nine residential units. All three grant awards, 2010, 2011 and 2014, are in line with the Citys Strategic Plan focusing on Neighborhood Revitalization as one of the Citys seven strategic priorities.
