If my kindergartner is any authority and shell be the first to tell you that she is bubble machines represent the coolest technology on the planet.
A new project out of the University of Bristol is promising to take bubble technology to the next level. The SensaBubble initiative is designed to provide a chrono-sensory mid-air display system that delivers information and feedback through multiple senses.
Mystery Popped: Science of Bubbles Decoded
The bubbles generated by the machine are delivered at specified sizes and speeds, each filled with an opaque fog that can be custom scented. Pop the bubbles, and you get cinnamon, or pine trees or what-have-you.
Whats more, images and colors can be projected onto the bubbles in mid-air, to deliver a unique kind of alert or display system.
Electric Charge Keeps Bubbles Alive for Hours
On the SensaBubble project page, lead researcher Sriram Subramanian says SensaBubble could have potential applications in gaming, advertising, education or museum exhibits.
There are many areas in which bubble-based technology like SensaBubble could be applied, such as a SensaBubble clock that releases the number of scented bubbles corresponding to the hour, or SensaBubble Maths, an educational game for children, which incorporates smell as feedback on their success.
Well, it would certainly make math more festive. I think we can all get behind that. Check out the demo video below.

For the first time, lighting professionals expect to install more LED than fluorescent fixtures over the coming year, according to the 4th annual lighting survey released today by energy-efficient lighting manufacturer Precision-Paragon [P2].
When asked what is the dominant lighting technology they expect to install in 2014, 49 percent of respondents selected LED, and 46 percent indicated fluorescent. In last years survey, 26 percent of respondents selected LED, and 68 percent indicated fluorescent, as the dominant lighting technology they expected to install in 2013.
Conducted annually since 2010, this years survey was distributed in December to over 5,000 energy-efficient lighting industry professionals. The surveys topics covered the industrys performance in the past year, as well as expectations for 2014.
Our industry has seen steady growth in LED lighting performance and sales in recent years, said Joe Martin, [P2] vice president and general manager. Picking the right technology is an important part of any lighting retrofit, and LED technology has advanced to the point that it can compete with fluorescent lighting in many applications.
Survey respondents indicated that in 2013, LEDs accounted for 37 percent of the fixtures they installed. Thats up from 27 percent in 2012, and 13 percent in 2011.
The lighting manufacturer has developed a number of innovative products to keep pace with the increased demand for LED lighting, like the newly released TKD fluorescent-to-LED retrofit kit.
Overall, the survey respondents reported a positive outlook for the energy-efficient lighting industry. Sixty-four percent indicated that they had experienced either modest or substantial growth in 2013, and 82 percent expect the overall energy-efficient lighting industry to experience growth in 2014.
Our respondents have reported growth every year since we started conducting our annual lighting survey, said Martin. Our customers are out there saving businesses money, and improving their lighting. Its no surprise that theyre experiencing continued growth.
More complete survey results are available on the Precision-Paragon [P2] energy-efficient lighting blog.

Bangalore has been ranked 31st among the global cities actively adding shopping centre space in 2014, according to the latest Global Viewpoint from CBRE Research.
According to CBRE research, New Delhi is ranked 21st, Hyderabad 23rd, and Bangalore 31st, among the global cities with the maximum shopping centre space under construction in 2014.
India continues to see a wave of new shopping centre development despite some developers pushing back completion dates due to the financing issues.
Around 500,000 sq m of new retail space is under construction in New Delhi. The largest two projects, DLF Mall of India NOIDA (204,385 sq m) and Logix City Center Mall (111,483 sq m), are both located in Noida. Among tier II cities in India, Hyderabad is the most active market with a supply pipeline (483,000 sq m) presently three times greater than its existing stock. Buoyant occupier demand is pushing for a strong development pipeline in New Delhi with 500,000 sq m of new retail space presently under construction.
Globally, a total of 39 million sq m of shopping centre space is presently under construction across the major cities, representing a 3 million sq m increase from 2013, according to the report. Most of this development activity for shopping centre space around the world is focused in China. According to the report, over half of the shopping centre space under construction in the 180 countries surveyed is taking place within China's borders. Shanghai takes the first position with 3.3 million sq m of space under construction - more than the combined total of all 86 European cities, excluding those in Russia and Turkey. Just behind Shanghai is Chengdu with 3.2 million sq m, followed by Shenzhen and Tianjin with 2.7 million sq m and 2.5 million sq m under construction, respectively.
Commenting on the findings of the report, Anshuman Magazine, CMD, CBRE, South Asia Pvt Ltd, said: "Strong economic growth in many Asian markets has been attracting an increasing number of cross-border retailers. Though China remains by far the most active market for shopping centre development, the tier I and II cities of India are also among the most active globally."
He added, "Unfortunately, however, there continues to exist a dearth of quality shopping space in many of our market places. Along with the large-scale urbanization of our leading cities and a burgeoning middle class population, it is this that has been driving shopping center development forward."
"The scale of new development in Asia and China in particular is staggering but there are a number of quite understandable factors behind it. The most reported is economic growth, which continues although now with some signs of slowing down. In addition, Chinese cities, and many others in Asia, present a physical environment that lends itself to environment-controlled shopping centres. Outdoor shopping can be too hot, too humid, too cold, too wet, too unsafe or too dirty and polluted - modern shopping centres are none of these when managed properly," said Sebastian Skiff, Executive Director of CBRE Retail.
Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia falls just outside the top 10 coming in as the 11th most active market globally. Southeast Asia has 3.3 million sq m under construction and nearly 40 per cent of this is located in the Malaysian city. In Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have also seen a large number of new developments in suburban areas and are seeing strong leasing demand from retailers attracted by lower rents and the lower-to-mid income residences nearby.

Looking for home restoration ideas? A new color palette, perhaps? Table-setting tips for a summer brunch? Several local home tours are coming up fast.
Think of these weekend outings as something fun to do while waiting for all those regional garden walks and tours to kick off in June. And theyll give you yet another good excuse for postponing cleaning out your garage.
Here are the details:
Historic Linwood Tour of Homes
This years tour along Linwood Avenue takes place from noon to 5 p.m. May 4 with the theme Streetscape of Buffalo History.
The architecture from one end of the street to the other exemplifies the gradual change in styles and design during the heyday of Buffalos grand era. The southern part of the street has grander homes; as you travel north the homes become smaller to reflect the change in social structure in Buffalo at the time, said chairman James Mack, whose 121-year-old Queen Anne is on the tour.
Other architectural styles include a Second Empire, Richardson Romanesque and Federal, as well as a home designed by noted architects Silsbee and Marling.
Visitors will come across all the architectural features one admires in old homes: handcrafted woodwork, elaborate staircases, leaded and stained-glass windows. These homes were built generally between 1860 and 1920.

An Alden woman who collected more than $36,000 in welfare benefits for more than five years, at the same time she was receiving unemployment benefits even though she had a job and was stealing from her employer, pleaded guilty Thursday to third-degree welfare fraud.
Crystal Adkinson, 43, of Bush Gardens, admitted in Erie County Court that she falsely claimed she had no income and that she collected $36,465 from the Erie County Department of Social Services from May 1, 2007 to Nov. 30, 2012, according to District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III.
In fact, Sedita said, she had two sources of income: state jobless benefits and her job at Ryerson Steel, where she was stealing from her employer.
Adkinson had pleaded guilty in 2012 in Erie County Court to attempted offering a false instrument for filing for receiving state jobless benefits while working at Ryerson and attempted fourth-degree grand larceny for stealing from Ryerson. She was placed on three years probation in those two cases.
Besides those two convictions, she has a criminal record dating back to 1991 that includes five other theft offenses, prosecutors said.
In the welfare fraud case, Adkinson faces a maximum prison term of 28 months to seven years when she is sentenced July 8 by Judge Michael F. Pietruszka.

While running for mayor last year, Bill de Blasio joined demonstrators on the steps of the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue to denounce a $300 million renovation of the marble edifice as a dramatic alteration of a crown jewel.
Now in City Hall with the power to stop the project, as he implored his predecessor to do, de Blasio hasnt made a decision on the plan, said Marti Adams, his spokeswoman. The mayor kept $151 million in his preliminary budget for the remodeling, with his final spending plan due next month.
The proposal seeks to draw more people to the iconic main branch while saving more than $7 million a year by shutting down two nearby library buildings. It would consolidate their operations inside an 80,000-square-foot atrium created by ripping out a seven-level book stack, hailed as an engineering marvel in a 1911 cover story by Scientific American magazine.
Opponents trying to preserve the stacks say the Beaux Arts temple of culture will no longer be the worlds pre-eminent free research institution when about 40 percent of its 9.9 million hard-to-find volumes must be retrieved from repositories more than 50 miles away. Neighborhood activists say the money earmarked for the renovation would be better spent on the systems 88 overused and underfunded local branches.

Were trying to improve a masterpiece, and none of the people involved are Michelangelos and da Vincis, said David Levering-Lewis, a historian who researched his Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of early civil rights champion W.E.B. Dubois at the library. He was paraphrasing architecture critic Ada Louise Huxtable, also a Pulitzer Prize winner, who denounced the plan in the Wall Street Journal in December 2012, a month before she died.
Anthony Marx, 55, president of the library since 2011, says hes listening to the opposition and taking into account de Blasios questions about the librarys future. He holds a vision, he says, of a more democratic institution welcoming more people than the current 2.4 million who use it now. About 30 percent of the current space is open to the public, he said.
