Remodel gives 1890s house a homey update

    - April 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Becky Summers of Hamilton wasnt going to let an opportunity pass her by, even if that opportunity presented itself while her husband, Doug, was out of the country on business.

Despite owning a home on Hillcrest that was perfect for the family, including sons Zach, Ben, and Kendall, there was something about the rundown old house on the corner of Laurel St. and Highway 96 (14th St.) that caught Beckys attention.

Doug was in France. I was coming down Laurel and thought I wonder what that house looks like. Ive always wanted an old home, Becky said. I called the realtor and she told me it had been sold, but to call back in case it didnt go through. The deal fell through. So I drug Doug over there and we looked at it.

The house seemed in good condition other than needing remodeled, and the rest is history. We bought it.

That was in 2003. Now the Summers home looks nothing like the house when they bought it. The family began doing work to the house at the beginning of 2005, and the property was ready to move into in August that same year.

Since then, converting the house into a home has been an ongoing process and a family affair even after the boys have grown and left home.

Wed come over on the weekends and tear plaster out, said Becky. All three of the boys had their hammers and crowbars and we just tore it up. We gutted everything. There was no insulation in the house. We installed all new heating and air systems, new windows, insulation, plumbing, and electrical.

Everything in here is brand new.

Becky not only relied on her husband and three children during the initial remodeling phases, but she also got a great helping hand from her late father, George Delozier, who was an electrician for years. Roger Turner was the master carpenter for the overhaul.

Dad did all the wiring, all the duct work, said Becky. He helped us do everything. He was our go-to guy. It was a family affair. We all had some part in doing stuff.

How to clean the gaps between floorboards

    - April 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Answer: The gaps you see are actually V grooves, which were typically added by flooring manufacturers when prefinished wood flooring first became popular. The grooves helped disguise the fact that one board didnt necessarily line up precisely with adjoining boards, often because the subfloor wasnt level, and it eliminated sharp corners that could lead to slivers. The drawback, as you know, is that the grooves trap dirt.

Before you invest in new flooring, call a company that refinishes hardwood floors and ask for an assessment of whether the wood can be sanded down to eliminate the grooves. Tom Peotter, who handles technical support for the National Wood Flooring Association (800-422-4556; http://www.nwfa.org), said that flooring as old as yours is probably -inch thick with about inch of wood above the tongue-and-groove joinery. If the grooves are 1/ 8-inch deep, they can probably be sanded out. If you have to sand through -inch, youre into the nails, and the tongue and groove would become moot, he said.

If you do spring for new flooring and stick with wood, youll discover that most prefinished hardwood flooring has what manufacturers call a micro bevel. Although this is typically less than 1/ 16-inch deep, it is still visible, so it might not create the look you want. To avoid a microbevel, you have two options: Buy square edge prefinished wood flooring, often an engineered product made with layers similar to plywood but sometimes also available as solid wood strips. But perfection is hard to achieve, so if the subfloor has any bumps or if the flooring thickness varies even a little, be aware that you will see the joints between pieces. Or you can buy traditional unfinished wood flooring and have the installer sand and finish it after its in place. The drawbacks of this approach: You might need to move out for a few days while the finish cures, and the finish might not be as durable as one applied at a factory.

Question: In the 100-year-old colonial house we bought, some Andersen windows used to have grids that are missing. You can still see the holes where the grids were fixed once. The other windows in the house are Pella windows with structured wooden grids on the interior glass, which look very nice. Who can install those missing grids on the other windows so that it doesnt look cheap (not too flat), and at what cost? Andersen told us that they wont do this.

    Chevy Chase

TW Perry, an Andersen dealer in Chevy Chase (301-652-2600; http://www.twperry.com), can order replacement grids for you. Lou Skojec, the sales manager, said the best way to be sure of getting the exact parts you need is to go to the store with two bits of data for each window. Etched into the glass near a corner, you should find the letters AW plus a code that identifies the year the window was made. And on the edge of a window screen, assuming your windows have them, you should find a four-digit numerical code that a window dealer can use to identify the window size. For example, 2032 on an Andersen window means it is 24 by 38 inches.

If you dont have screens, measure the daylight openings, the visible height and width of each glass pane.

Getting grids that fit requires both the date and the size because companies change their designs over the years, Skojec said. For a window with upper and lower sashes, expect to pay $30 to $60 for a pair of replacement grids, he said.

Once you have the grids, you should be able to install them yourself. Check when you pick up the grids, but the process usually involves placing the bottom tab in the slot, then bowing out the grid slightly to get the top pin in place. Then you repeat this process on the left and right. If youd rather someone else do the installation, a window-cleaning company can probably help you.

Tribeca 2014: In 'Beyond the Brick,' Lego as cultural juggernaut

    - April 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW YORK -- The Lego Movie this winter reawakened many people to the colorful plastic bricks they hadnt thought about since childhood. But a raft of people inside and outside the Danish company have been clued in to its pleasures for years, as a new movie gleefully and sometimes astonishingly documents.

The film, "Beyond the Brick," which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival several days ago, is a playful if decidedly soft-lensed look at all things Lego. Directed by Daniel Junge and Kief Davidson and narrated by Jason Bateman, Brick looks at the subculture of Lego or perhaps, given how dominant it appears to have become, the culture of Lego.

As Brick demonstrates, hundreds of thousands of fans build and tinker in their homes, then commune over the Internet or at regular Brick Cons gatherings of like-minded souls who obsess over pieces and creations the way superhero fans immerse themselves in Comic-Con.

PHOTOS: Tribeca Film Festival 2014 | Scene

I was surprised most by at how Lego brings people together, said Davidson in an interview, which included Junge. When we first set out to make the movie, it seemed like something people do on their own. But it really is a way for people to connect.

Known for more serious fare (Junge won an Oscar for his doc Saving Face while Davidson was nominated for "Open Heart"), the filmmakers started this project after looking into a film on just one Lego convention before realizing there was a larger story to tell. They also, like many of its potential viewers, have been reconnecting to the colorful bricks via the young people in their lives.

They eventually reached out to the company, which, in the spirit that also had them open up to Hollywood with its first-ever feature, was willing to cooperate.

The directors' examination of the quirky company can be somewhat light. The movie does cover Lego Group's rough period -- foundering in the 1990s as it scaled back the building aspects of its product and had yet to discover wide-scale licensing deals but mostly emphasizes the creativity and open-sourced attitude that has made it the second-biggest toymaker in the world, with the company sometimes employing designs of its fans and even hiring a few. (The filmmakers, who hope the movie can strike a theatrical-release deal, said Lego gave them autonomy and had only minor factual notes after seeing a rough cut for the first time last month.)

VIDEO: Tribeca Film Festival 2014 trailers

But its the Lego devotees who form the movies spine: the AFOLs (Adult Fans of Lego) and others who obsess and build. (Lest one think its a geeks-only pursuit, the filmmakers also show some unlikely devotees, including Dwight Howard of the NBA's Houston Rockets.)

Matt Pitt delivers first sermon since release from jail

    - April 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Nine days after getting out of jail, youth evangelist Matt Pitt returned to preaching at the Basement on Tuesday night. It was his first sermon since he was released from the Shelby County Jail on Palm Sunday.

Pitt was charged with impersonating a peace officer in Calera in May of 2012. The evangelist pleaded guilty to an amended charge of attempting to impersonate a peace officer and was sentenced to two years probation.

Pitt's probation was later revoked when he was charged again with impersonating a peace officer for an incident in June of 2013 and had to serve the remaining time of his sentence in the Shelby County Jail. He was released from jail early for good behavior.

Dozens of people attended Tuesday in support of Pitt and supporters tell FOX6 they see his incarceration as a positive thing.

We took our cameras inside where the service was held but after just a few minutes we were asked to leave. However, the service was streamed live online.

Pitt spoke to the crowd for about 30 minutes about his time in jail and even joked about his smile on his mug shot.

Even though Pitt got in front of the camera it wasn't ours. We asked Vince Lovell, Chief Operating Officer of The Basement why.

"I'm sure the media is going to hit him up with all kinds of questions about his case and his lawyers have really advised him not to get in front of a camera because that's all that they're going to ask," he said.

Joel Randolph has been following Pitt for years. He said at times this past year has been tough but he was excited to see the youth evangelist back on the stage.

Electro-Matic and Kingsun Form LED Lighting 'Team USA' Joint Venture with Detroit Area Firm to …

    - April 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Joint Venture with Detroit area firm to gro w US-built LED lighting business LED Lighting Turning innovation into value.

FARMINGTON HILLS, MI Detroit area electronics technology firm Electro-MaticProducts, Inc. recently completed a joint venture partnership agreement with Kingsun Optoelectronic Co., Ltd., a global leader in commercial and industrial LED lighting solutions. The agreement will primarily benefit the Electro-Matic Visual Products Group, which builds and markets finished LED lighting fixtures for a variety of outdoor and indoor commercial lighting and display applications.

The partnership formalizes an already close working relationship between the two companies in developing continuously improving LED lighting products in the rapidly growing commercial market for this energy efficient lighting technology. A handful of multi-national electronics concerns are acknowledged as quality leaders in producing key components for commercial-grade LED lighting. Kingsun Optoelectronics is one.

Electro-Matic: Kingsun optics best in class

"When it comes to lighting highways for safety or parking areas for security, Electro-Matic isn't interested in anything but best in class components," said David Scaglione, vice president sales and marketing for Electro-Matic Products. "That's why our LED lighting fixtures use Cree LEDs, Philips drivers, and Kingsun optics."

Electro-Matic has been manufacturing and marketing LED based display products for more than 15 years and entered the fast growing LED lighting market four years ago. Over that time Electro-Matic has focused on improving the efficiency and reliability of LED fixtures while providing innovative solutions for a wide range of industrial, roadway and commercial applications. According to Scaglione, one way they have done that successfully is by applying a modular approach to the fixture design, which allows incremental control of the lighting intensity, direction and shape across each product line. That's where Kingsun comes in.

"Kingsun has the best optoelectronics in the business," says Scaglione. The optoelectronics, or optics, concern how the LED light is directed and how the LED arrays are situated on the light bars that form the modules for a particular fixture. Unlike conventional incandescent or high intensity discharge (HID) lamps, light from individual LEDs is directional and can be 'lensed' or focused. The type, number, arrangement and angle of the LED light bars are carefully calculated to produce a specific light intensity and pattern in the finished fixture. Kingsun develops and manufactures these lensed modules which, together with other key components, are assembled into completed fixtures by Electro-Matic at their plant in Farmington Hills, Michigan. There, each fixture is also tested, packed and shipped to customers throughout North America for installation.

Decades of LED lighting experience come together for the U. S. market

Kingsun is a major player in LED fixtures, and is responsible for translating a lot of the science of LED lighting technology into commercially viable products. Its plant in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, China, is the largest lighting R&D and production facility in all of Asia, with more than 3 million square feet and 2000 employees devoted to the task. The company boasts an installed base of 800,000 high-powered LED outdoor fixtures and 10,000 km in roadway lighting alone.

Electro-Matic has also been at the forefront of LED lighting technology. As a joint venture partner with Kingsun, Electro-Matic seeks to build its LED lighting business by providing value through the innovation, reliability and technical superiority these two companies bring to the industrial LED lighting market. According to Electro-Matic LED lighting products manager, Alicia Martinez, that potential is huge. "Just from an operational standpoint the cost-savings of LED conversions for existing roadways, parking lots and physical plants is still growing."
