Well-known U.S.-based architects have taken issue with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Britains leading architectural association, for its political stand against its Israeli counterpart. According to the Architects Journal, Daniel Libeskind, Richard Meier, and Rick Bell, the executive director of AIA New York, have spoken out against the RIBAs decision to seek the suspension of the Israeli association from the International Union of Architects (UIA) until it acts to resist projects on illegally-occupied land and observes international law and accords.
The motion was presented to the RIBA council on March 19 by the associations past president, Angela Brady. It passed 23 to 16, with 10 abstentions. The UIA is to meet in August.
The RIBA contends that the Israel Association of United Architects (IAUA) has disregarded the international bodys Resolution 13, which condemns development projects and the construction of buildings on land that has been ethnically purified or illegally appropriated [and] all action contravening the fourth Geneva Convention.
In response, the IAUA asked the international association not to bring up the motion at its general assembly in August, arguing that the motion was disproportionate, incompatible with circumstances, and contrary to the spirit of the UIA. The Israeli group also wrote to the president and vice president of the RIBA that the IAUA has no political agenda [and] no impact on personal stance. The letter adds that Resolution 13 was never meant to be a tool to be used against architects or associations of architects under the aegis of the UIA.
A third letter from the IAUA, to British Prime Minister David Cameron, refers to the RIBA motion as a a discriminatory, unjust political act designed to isolate Israel, and concludes, The Israeli-Palestinian conflict would do well to be resolved through dialogue. Boycotts have been proven not to be the best foundation for increasing understanding between parties in conflict.
According to a statement by the RIBA, It is not the case that the RIBA is in any way anti-Semitic. A spokesperson for the British association declined to say whether it had ever passed a similar motion regarding any other association in the international group, which claims to have some 130 members, including Russia and China.
New York City-based architect and Pritzker Prize winner Richard Meier wrote to the RIBAs president, according to Building Design, stating that he and many other New York architects condemn the action.
But British architect Abe Hayeem, a RIBA member who is the chair of Architects and Planners for Justice in Palestine and co-founder of UK Architects Against Apartheid, has said that the one action [of the anti-apartheid group] that had the most impact was to get the RIBA to end its links and recognition of schools of architecture in South Africaon the basis of the almost negligible number of black students attending these schools. [This] did alter their intake.
British Prime Minister David Cameron, who visited Israel on March 12, pledged in the Knesset that he would oppose the boycott of Israel and defeat all attempts to delegitimize the country. Cameron was quoted in Israels daily Haaretz as saying Israel's fate "will never rest on statements by amateur politicians.
Itzhak Lipovetzky-Lir, past president of the Israeli architects association and its coordinator of international relations, said in an interview that his group has been a member of the international union since the 1950s and has been contending with attempts to expel it for a decade. The UIA Resolution 13 is a general policy, Lipovetsky-Lir added. More than a few countries that are members of the UIA [have] disputes over construction on conquered land, for example, China and Tibet, or Russia and Chechnya. Therefore, the organization, in which membership is voluntary, has tried not to take a decision against a member country because it could undermine the entire organization.

U.S. Architects Criticize RIBA for its Stance on Israeli Counterpart

The CIGI Campus is now the fourth building at the corner of Erb and Caroline Streets in Waterloo, Canada, to win the prestigious Governor Generals Medals in Architecture.
Designed by KPMB Architects, the CIGI Campus is among 12 projects that received the honour in 2014. The program run by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the Canada Council for the Arts celebrates outstanding design in recently built projects by Canadian architects. Medals are awarded based on the architectural artistic merit of a structures design, including elements such as conceptual clarity, detailing, sustainable design, compatibility with the site, and innovation and uniqueness.

Three B.C. projects have won recognition in a national competition that honours the best in Canadian architecture.
The buildings the Tula House on Quadra Island designed by Patkau Architects; North Vancouvers City Hall by Micheal Green, now of Michael Green Architecture; and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Centre for Drug Research and Development at the University of B.C. by Saucier + Perrotte Architectes and Hughes Condon Marler Architects are being recognized with Governor Generals Medals in Architecture.
The projects and nine others across the country were named winners of the award by the Canada Council for the Arts on Wednesday. Awards will be presented at a ceremony at Rideau Hall on May 13.
The oceanside Tula House was described by the awards jury as a spectacular house for a spectacular site that is in dynamic harmony with nature.
The North Vancouver City Hall project revitalized the existing municipal hall and added a tubelike structure between the hall and the adjacent library to connect them.
The jury wrote that the project was an elegant, restrained and sophisticated expansion to a small district municipal hall. ... The vocabulary is warm and refined, befitting a city halls place in the community. The design was based on the concept of two trees whose foliage becomes fused into an extensive network of branches.
The UBC building was described by the jury as being a strong building with a strong concept, beautifully executed.

Three B.C. buildings among architecture award winners
Traditionally North Texas has been one of the country's fastest growing retail development markets because, well, we love to shop.
But the last few years, that's not been so much.
The recession hit the shopping center development market harder than probably any commercial building sector and it's been slower to come back than, say, the apartment market where building is booming.
So that's why it's such a surprise to see a new study by CBRE Group that shows that the Dallas-Fort Worth area is the top retail construction market in the country.
About 2.6 million square feet of shopping, retail and entertainment space was under construction here at the start of the year, the commercial real estate firm reports.
That's slightly more than Las Vegas and New York City, the number two and three building markets on their list.
Of course retail construction in North Texas is less than half of what it was back in the early 2000s when so many large shopping center projects were under construction.
But current additions of new supermarkets, restaurants, theaters and such add up to a fair amount of new space. And renovations of older centers including Turtle Creek Village in Dallas and Plaza on the Parkway in Addison are included in the mix.
Plus, CBRE Group estimates that about 97 percent of what's being built in the D-FW area is already leased.
While the U.S. arguably invented the shopping center, these days we are lagging behind in the worldwide push to add more places for people to spend their money.

A once-controversial development at South Platte Canyon Road and West Mineral Avenue is now under construction and will bring 250 apartment units and four retail businesses to Littleton.
The Meadows at Platte Canyon project broke ground the week of April 7 and, according to Evergreen Development construction manager Ron Wolford, it should be complete by June 2015, with some units ready by February.
Evergreen Development owns the property.
"Units will be ready in about 10 months," Wolford said.
Heavy equipment preps the site of the new apartment complex, The Meadows at Platte Canyon, in Littleton on April 18. A 250-unit apartment complex will include some additional retail will occupy the long-vacant acreage at the southeast corner of West Mineral Avenue and South Platte Canyon Road. The apartments will be equipped with garages, but there will also be a parking lot on the site. Rand Construction is contracted to do the building and the architect is Kephart.
In addition to the 250 apartments, there will be a 10,000-square-foot retail facility that will house four businesses.
No business is yet under contract for any of the four units, but a deal with Dunkin' Donuts is all but finalized.
"We're almost done with a lease with a national doughnut chain, and it's not Krispy Kreme," joked Ken Gatt, leasing manager with Evergreen Development.

Littleton apartment-retail complex under construction

China, especially Shanghai, has the largest amount of shopping area under construction in the world, a survey by international property consultants CBRE has found.
In fact, eight out of the top 10 most active cities are in China, it said yesterday. CBRE surveyed 180 countries. About 9.8 million square meters of new retail space were opened in 2013 globally and a further 39 million sq m was under construction.
Shanghai took the lead by having 3.3 million sq m under construction as of January 31, 2014.
Chengdu ranked second with 3.2 million sq m, followed by Shenzhen and Tianjin which have 2.7 million sq m and 2.5 million sq m under construction respectively.
Kuala Lumpur is just outside the top 10 while Hong Kong's ranking is also low, with less than 400,000 sq m.
CBRE Retail executive director Sebastian Skiff said the scale of new development in Asia and China is staggering.
"Chinese economic growth has some signs of slowing down and mainland cities present a physical environment that lends itself to environment-controlled shopping centers," he said.
