Howard Beach, Queens, NY (PRWEB) April 07, 2014
A recent CBS news report from March 28, 2014 (source: CBS New York, http://cbsloc.al/1jnHYkD) says Howard Beach, Queens residents are on edge after a recent escalation in home break-ins that has stirred the neighborhood. Now, the City is taking action.
In fact, the NYPD has increased patrols in the area with marked and unmarked cars after 10 or more break-ins were recently reported. The NYPD has now set up a command post and 30 or more uniformed officers have been sent to Howard Beach (source: Queens Chronicle, April 4, 2014, http://bit.ly/1fWhw0Y)
Residents are terrified. Break-ins are stirring up fear in the neighborhood and causing unneeded panic in many families. Something needs to be done to stop this trend and to prevent it from happening in the future, says Matt DiMicco, Owner of Total Security Integrated Systems.
The Howard Beach burglaries have been taking place during the day with thieves entering through windows, side doors and even a front door in at least one reported case. Items including money, jewelry, safes and electronics were targeted. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
With these thefts mounting and peoples safety at risk, Total Security suggests the following seven Howard Beach security tips to protect your home and your loved ones:
1. Keep your burglar alarms on. If you do not have one, its highly recommended to install one.
2. Put signage, security decals in windows and security lawn signs to deter thieves.
3. Do not open the door unless you know for sure who it is. Consider installing a video intercom.
4. Install an affordable, but well placed home security camera system both on the exterior and interior of your home to help deter and catch thieves.

COLUMBIA, Tenn. -
A home security camera captured a runaway FedEx truck after the driver forgot to make sure the vehicle was in park.
The delivery man was stoppedon aColumbia streetThursday morning when the accident happened.
The driver reported the incident to police.
"It wasn't fully in park," he told a 911 dispatcher. "I guess the shift looked like it was in park, but it wasn't all the way there."
The driver went on to say that he walked to the back of the van to pull something out when the truck started rolling down the hill.
The delivery man tried to chase down the runaway vehicle but no such luck.
"I wasn't able to get to the driver's seat in time," he said.
The entire incident took place in front of an audience of barking dogs and was captured by a nearby home security camera.
"I just heard the dogs making a commotion. I looked across the street and saw the van parked odd in the neighbor's yard so I just went and looked at the camera I had and saw what had happened," the homeowner told News 2.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said there was no absolute fool-proof method to tackle security issues. Pic: The Malay MailPETALING JAYA: Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has hit back at critics of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), saying that there are no fool-proof security measures.
These programmes are effective to a certain extent but there is no absolute fool-proof method to tackle security issues, Wan Junaidi said.
There will always be isolated cases. To guarantee nothing will happen is impossible.
Esscom was slammed after the kidnapping of two foreigners from a resort near Semporna, Sabah, last Wednesday. It was the second such case off the coast of Sabah over the past five months.
Junaidi said the programme was intended to coordinate security operations with the military and the police, and also to report them to the Sabah chief minister and then to the prime minister.
If we learn from history, for example the Templer Plan that was implemented during the Communist insurgency in 1948 and the Rajang Area Security Command (Rascom) programme from 1972 to 1976, these were some of the best efforts to concentrate operations for security.
But in spite of these efforts, incidences of fighting and killing still occurred.
He also said there were numerous resort operators around the Sabah coast, as well as thousands of people staying and working there.
All resorts should also beef up their security by improving communications and CCTV cameras within their premises.

As April opened with wind-driven snow and temperatures that still featured wind-chill readings, Minnesotans longingly looked from their windows waiting for the day when ice-covered lakes would open and fresh-water fishing could resume. Its a way of life and in Minnesota sport fishing is a $2.8 billion industry of vital importance to the states economy and well-being.
The importance of our states natural resources can be taken for granted. It shouldnt be. As winter releases its long-lasting grip it is time to take stock of the condition of state water bodies and reinforce the need for better stewardship. There is work to do.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has produced findings on the condition of our lakes and rivers that cant be ignored. The DNR has identified bodies of water that are infested with a number of invasive aquatic plants, including nearly 300 lakes with infestations of Eurasian water milfoil. Nearly 200 lakes and rivers are infested with zebra mussels.
The seriousness of invasive aquatic plant species and zebra mussels is often dwarfed by the growing threat of Asian carp that continue to migrant north and pose a threat of reaching northern Minnesota. Pictures of carp jumping into boats grab our attention. The problems related to weeds and mussels that clog lakes and choke off nutrients needed by fish are hidden below the surface.
It is encouraging that some positive signs are coming from St. Paul. Gov. Mark Dayton and the Legislature are crafting a bonding bill that provides badly needed dollars to address the seriousness of many aquatic invasive species.
There is support for $6 million in bonding dollars to assist the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center at the University of Minnesota. The center operates in partnership with the DNR in the effort to combat plant infestations, zebra mussels and the spread of carp. Funding is desperately needed. The bonding dollars would provide upgrades to the centers century-old building and target inadequate water, electrical and heating and cooling systems. With an improved facility, the center expects to add more student researchers tasked with studying invasive aquatic plants. A $3 million bonding proposal would be matched by $3 million in University dollars for a new lab to study problems related to bees.
Our lawmakers need to make sure these projects are not left on the cutting table when the final bonding bill is carved out. They are simply too important to pass over.
Bonding for a $5 million dam repair and carp barrier on the Rum River in Anoka has fallen from the funding list. The city of Anoka has withdrawn its request this year and the dam repair ranks only 42nd on the DNRs priority list. The threat of carp migrating north to Mille Lacs Lake through the Rum River is real and the Anoka barrier is a step to protect the states marquee walleye fishery from a carp infestation. It should not be ignored for long.
It is not only lawmakers who must be good stewards. Everyone who launches a boat needs to do their part to avoid spreading aquatic plants and zebra mussels from lake to lake. And there have been positive results.
The DNR continues to work with local government to train monitors who check boats at launch areas. Conservation officers remain vigilant and fewer violators were issued misdemeanor tickets in 2013 compared to 2012. Watershed district boards and private lake associations are stepping forward. These efforts, coupled with public education, will help slow the spread of invasive aquatic plant species and zebra mussels that are here now.

When Carmen Roman finished her shift at Anchor House Saturday morning, she noticed a flyer on the table promoting the Living Local Expo Fair at the New Jersey Army National Guard Armory on Eggerts Crossing Road.
I saw the flyer on the table. They were getting ready to put it on the (bulletin board). This is the first time I have come (to the expo). I literally just got off work, said Ms. Roman, who lives in West Trenton with her family.
I am extremely interested in the environment. I want to save the planet. Im concerned about healthy eating. I am becoming more mindful of what we eat. I want to learn more about irrigation. I want to grow a small organic garden, Ms. Roman said.
Ms. Roman was one of a steady stream of visitors to the 7th annual Living Local Expo Fair, despite the rainy day. The event was co-sponsored by Sustainable Lawrence, along with the green teams from Hopewell, Ewing and Lawrence townships and the Mercer County Office of Sustainable Development.
The fair has grown every year, said Tahirih Smith, president of Sustainable Lawrences board of directors. Four years ago, there were 28 vendors. Saturday afternoon, more than 80 companies and nonprofit groups had set up shop to inform visitors of what they had to offer.
Visitors who were interested in replacing old windows with new ones could stop by booths that featured new windows, as well as vendors who showcased new insulation. Of course, there were vendors who were willing to help homeowners make some upgrades to their heating and air conditioning systems.
Another booth featured information on rain barrels, which are attached to rain gutter downspouts. They collect water that can be used in the garden. A garden could use as much as 1,400 gallons of water during the April-to-September growing season.
Other exhibitors offered services that ranged from organic dry cleaning to environmentally sensitive cosmetics. Acknowledging that some households prefer to use disposable paper goods, Green Paper Cup offered disposable utensils, plates, napkins, bowls and cups that when disposed of properly would convert into compost within 80 days.
At a nearby table, Lawrence Township set up a booth that sought to raise awareness of its proposed curbside organic pickup program. Households that dispose of organic material food scraps, paper towels and napkins and biodegradable forks, knives, plates and spoons could see it turn into compost.
Off to the side in a large garage at the National Guard Armory, there was an exhibit of green cars that ranged from a turbo-diesel Chevrolet Cruze that stickered for about $27,000, to a Chevrolet Volt gasoline/electric car at about $40,000 and a couple of Lexus hybrid vehicles all the way up to the Tesla all-electric car that starts at around $80,000.
