AKRON, Ohio Chances are your lawn is looking a bit bedraggled after this rough winter.
Thats not surprising. Between brutally cold temperatures and drying winds, turf took a beating this year.
Probably it will come back just fine, but a little TLC can prevent problems, reverse damage and let your lawn green up faster, lawn care experts Melinda Myers and Joe Rimelspach said.
Heres what they recommend.
PREVENT SNOW MOLD
Grass in the shade and other places where snow and ice linger is susceptible to snow mold, a fuzzy, pink or gray fungus that can damage or kill grass, said Myers, a horticulturist, garden writer and radio and TV host whose books include The Ohio Lawn Guide.
Snow mold likes moist environments, she said, so its a good idea to lightly rake grass in those vulnerable areas to fluff it and allow light and air to penetrate. A leaf rake will work fine, Myers said.
The crowns of the grass plants are still alive, so the grass can come back, said Rimelspach, a turf grass disease specialist at Ohio State University. But Myers recommended taking action now, before you see signs of fungus.

Each year in the spring, we tend to get very excited to be able to get back outside and work in our lawns and gardens. However, this is still fairly early in the year to do much work in our yards. This article was written to prepare you for when the best time is to begin lawncare activities in the spring.
Overseeding our lawns can take place between April 1 and April 30 for the cool season turfgrasses, such as Kentucky bluegrass and turf-type tall fescue. If you are planting a new warm season lawn or are adding plugs to thicken it up, you should wait until late May through June to do that. The warm season grasses would be either Buffalograss or Zoysiagrass. These would be the four best turfgrasses to use in our lawns in Southeast Nebraska.
When purchasing grass seed, ensure that you are purchasing seed that is weed free, there should only be 0.3 percent or less weed seed in the package and no noxious weeds should be found in the seed mixture. Avoid purchasing lawn seed that is advertised in the Sunday newspaper, as those are not usually good seed choices and are not suited well for our area. Avoid purchasing lawn seed that contains annual ryegrass as that is more of a weed species. The best seed choices are either 100 percent of turf-type tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, or Buffalograss or a mixture of tall fescue and bluegrass.
Mowing your lawn should begin as your lawn begins to grow again. We should mow our lawns to a height of at least 2 inches for Kentucky bluegrass and 2.5-3 inches for tall fescue. So, you can wait until the lawn gets to at least 3 inches before beginning the mowing routine in the spring. Remember, only mow off 1/3 of the grass each time that you mow. The lawn clippings may be left on the lawn or bagged and removed from the lawn, at your own discretion. If you return the clippings back to the turf, it will add up to 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet over the course of the growing season. This can account to one fertilizer application for your lawn over the growing season.
As for the fertilization, this should also wait until later in the spring. It is recommended to add 1.0 pound of fertilizer per 1,000 square feet between April 20th and May 10th. This fertilization should be done with a slow release fertilizer of your choosing. Fertilization of Kentucky bluegrass can be applied 4 more times throughout the growing season. To make this easier to remember, fertilizer treatments should be done on Arbor Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Halloween.
As for tall fescue lawns, these only need to be fertilized two times a year, in the early spring and late fall. We should avoid fertilization during the hot summer months to avoid possibly burning the grass blades. The spring fertilization can be done in combination with a pre-emergent herbicide that will combat crabgrass, foxtail, sandburs and goosegrass. Do not use crabgrass pre-emergent herbicides if you have overseeded in the spring until you have mowed your new seedlings at least 3 times. Dandelion and other winter annual weeds can be treated in combination with the Labor Day fertilizer treatment for best control.

THE clocks have changed and longer days are on the way, so it is the perfect time to think about what is going on in your garden.
Dobbies Braehead General Manager Brendan Chambers in the popular store Pictures: Mark Mainz
Finding time for preparation to get planting and planning ahead for the months to come are all important just now, according to experts at Dobbies in Braehead.
Weeding, getting the lawn in good shape and planting a vegetable garden are all jobs that can be done now, even if the weather isn't particularly warm.
"Be canny, there can still be a bit of frost around, but lawn care is very relevant at the moment," advises store manager Kelvin Mobbs. "It is all about setting up routines, if you are going to look after it, it isn't something you do once and walk away. You've got to love your lawn and if you're going to feed it, do it frequently.
"Often people chuck their feed down, stand back and expect that to be it. But it needs repetition and it needs care."
Keen gardeners will already have been out to do the first cut of the year. If there is moss, tackle it now with a treatment that feeds the lawn, kills weeds and moss, then scarify the grass.
"You can do all this by hand, using a flexible grass rake that pulls out all the moss," explains horticultural manager Andy Garven. "Or you can use an electric lawn rake. If you're keen and really want the lawn to look good that's something to think about. You'd use it in the spring and then again in the autumn."
The number of people growing their own vegetables has risen and the time is right for planting seed potatoes and preparing tomato plants for the months ahead. They are projects popular with children and this Dobbies works with four local schools.
"Potatoes are easy things to grow, you can grow them in lots of different kinds of containers," says Andy. "Chit them to get them started, then put them in."

FARGO If yards could communicate, the question would not be Does this landscape make me look fat? but rather Do these shrubs make me look old and overgrown?
The grounds at Windsor Castle may look great, but the queens legion of gardeners meticulously pampers and primps the centuries-old landscaping. Aging yards arent always so pretty.
A slow drive through older neighborhoods provides a good example of the expected longevity of an average home landscape. Plantings installed during the 1950s through the 1980s show that after 30 or more years, action is usually needed.
Its important to address front yard landscapes that have outlived their expiration date so they dont detract from interesting homes in established neighborhoods.
If an aging front yard landscape needs a redo, try a 12-step process.
1. Take a hard, objective look at the landscape.
Photos as viewed from the street help us see our front yard as it appears to passersby. Look especially for evergreens, both pyramidal and spreading, that are sparse, bare at the base and unsightly by most standards.
Were shrubs or trees planted too closely to the home or to each other? Is the home still the focal point of the yard, or are overgrown plants the first impression given to viewers? Give an honest self-evaluation.
2. Decide what can stay and what should go.
Deciduous (leafy) shrubs that are leggy can be rejuvenated by pruning. Cut back branches to 6 inches above ground level in spring before the shrubs leaf out. New growth sprouts below the cuts, so dont go half-way with the pruning. Grit your teeth, and cut back all the way.

A recent study by the China Agricultural University and Purdue University revealed that 1 in every 5 adults has admitted to peeing in a swimming pool. Most people believe that the chlorine in the pool will simply neutralize the urine and everyone will be fine. This is not necessarily the case. Whats more alarming about the study is that when uric acid, a byproduct of urine, combines with chlorine it creates a new chemical called cyanogen chloride. Cyanogen chloride is a gas that when inhaled can be harmful to the central nervous system, heart and lungs. Healthline News says that cyanogen chloride is a schedule 3 controlled substance by the U.S. Chemical Weapons Convention due to the potential in being used in chemical warfare.
The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends that the maximum concentration of cyanogen chloride be 70 milligrams per liter or less for drinking water. The highest concentration the study observed was 33 milligrams per liter at 8 milligrams per liter of chlorine, which is a much higher concentration of chlorine than is found in the average pool. This is still deemed safe by the WHO revealing that there is no imminent threat of poisoning while peeing in the pool. Never the less, doing so adversely affects water and air quality and should be avoided as much as possible especially for indoor swimming pools because of the enclosed room.
The study only polled adults, but it can be assumed that the percentage of children who pee in a swimming pool is higher than the 20% of the adults who do. Homeowners may be wondering how they can protect themselves when having a large amount of bathers in their swimming pool? When hosting a large party over the summer with a lot of children, Chris Cipriano, President of Cipriano Landscape Design has some recommendations. The best way you can prepare is to make sure your pool is running at its maximum sanitation level when the party starts. In order to ensure this, I recommend running your filtration system for 48 hours prior to the party to allow your pool to turnover several times. He continues, If the pool is running at the maximum sanitization level it will be better prepared to handle the party. Turnover refers to how long it takes to filter all of the swimming pools water through the filtration system.
After the party is over Cipriano would also recommend running the filtration for another 48 hours to filter any contaminants that may have entered the water and also slightly increasing the amount of chlorine in the pool to help with the decontamination process. People have been safely using swimming pools for centuries so this isnt meant to scare anyone but rather provide some advice to keep a swimming pool as clean as possible. Obviously the best safety measure is to pee in the appropriate place, the bathroom, but these are some good precautionary measures that can be taken when planning a large party.
Celebrating 25 years in business, 15-time international award winner Cipriano Landscape Design distinguishes themselves from all other swimming pool & landscaping companies with their extensive design and construction experience. As a recognized national leader in custom residential & commercial landscaping, masonry and swimming pools, the Mahwah NJ firm has been offering complete estate transformations since 2001.
