Queensland Government under fire from Wilderness Society over land clearing permits in state's north

    - April 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ABC The Government says the legislation changes are part of its vision to expand Queensland's agricultural economy.

The Queensland Government is under fire from conservationists over the granting of new land clearing permits in the north of the state.

The Wilderness Society says weakening of vegetation management laws last year has led to large-scale clearing applications.

Campaigner Gavan McFadzean says the biggest example is a permit granted to Strathmore Station, a big cattle station in the gulf savannah country near Georgetown.

"We've discovered through a tip-off that [land clearing] is now broadscale and at an alarming rate," he said.

"One of the biggest examples of that we've discovered is in the Gilbert catchment at Strathmore, where an application for 30,000 hectares of clearing - that's about 134 Brisbane CBDs of clearing - has been granted."

Mr McFadzean says the legislative amendments are undermining the land clearing legislation introduced in Queensland nearly 20 years ago.

"During the 1980s and 1990s Queensland was clearing at an alarming rate, it was actually an emerging environmental crisis," he said.

"If Queensland was a country, in the early 90s it would have been one of the worst land clearers in the world, on par with Brazil, the Congo Basin, Borneo and Indonesia.

"It was through the 1996 native Vegetation Act introduced by the Beattie government that land clearing was brought under control."

    Palm oil fuels Indonesia deforestation

    - April 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Gohong, Indonesia - Anang Sugito, 47, stands in front of a 100-strong crowd pointing to a hand-drawn map on the wall. His voice cracks when he talks about the future of Dayak village.

"If we sell off our forests, our children will be landless. They will have their own children, and what would they do?" asked Sugito, 47, the village secretary for the 7,000 household strong community of Gohong, and father of five children ranging from 10 to 18-years old.

In a country where indigenous activists and leaders defending their land are sometimes intimidated, harassed, and killed by palm oil companies and their collaborators, many Dayak villagers - who have practiced shifting cultivation in forests in Central Kalimantan for hundreds of years - do not understand why they have to go to court to defend forests against conversion to mono-crop palm plantations.

"It is only natural, and as it should be, that we do everything in our power to hold onto our land," said Abdul Muin, an ethnic Dayak hailing from the neighbouring village of Sei Dusun, where villagers have filed lawsuits against oil palm corporations with concessions to 11,000 hectares of peatland forest.

While so far 11 companies have had their permits revoked as a result, the country hosts more than 2,500 local suppliers and Muin said it is a constant struggle to fend them off.

There is no way we can cultivate livelihoods in this environment. Oil palm plantations make everything dead, even there are no more birds.

    - Abdul Muin, ethnic Dayak villager

Demand for palm oil and energy in Indonesia continues to drive deforestation and displacement of local communities in a country that has already lost 64 million hectares of tropical forests to agribusiness in the past five decades, according to the World Research Institute (WRI), an international research organisation focusing on sustainable energy and conservation.

In recent years, a billion dollar bilateral agreement with Norway has encouraged the Indonesian government to issue moratoriums on forest clearance to protect its carbon-loaded peatland.

Confusion over land tenure, however, continues to cloud forest protection, with potentially devastating environmental impacts on Indonesia's remaining 22 million hectares of peatland forests, which globally make up five percent of peatland area, according to the National Council on Climate Change.

At Home Living: Decorating a child's room through the years

    - April 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Involving your child from an early age when decorating his or her room is important for a number of reasons, according to a former northeast Kansas interior designer.

With more 37 years of experience in the interior design business, Jolayne Hawver, of Ozawkie, said she enjoyed consulting and decorating childrens rooms.

I used certain games that would show me what their color preferences were, she said. That would give me some insight into what they preferred. I was letting the child be the client. I had a lot of really good results that way.

Hawver said a child cant obviously have input into how his or her nursery is going to be decorated, but starting as early as possible to involve your child in the decorating decision-making as they get older can pay off in many ways.

If theyre part of the process and their preferences and personality are put in that room, they are going to respond to that room better, she said. They will tend to keep it cleaner longer and do better in school. They just seem to grow more.

Theres no one right answer in decorating a childs room, Hawver said, as their tastes are going to change as they grow up, especially in the teen years.

However, for the preschool years, Hawver suggests using shelves with containers that store toys within reach.

You want them to be able to access them easily and put them away easily, she said. Having fewer toys is better. A few well-chosen toys is the best way to go. Their room stays uncluttered and they have room to play.

Other budget-friendly storage solutions that can grow with your child, Hawver said, are wicker baskets, plastic containers and buckets. She said these containers will eventually wear out but they can be used to store different things as your child gets older.

Another way to decorate on a budget is using chalkboard paint to allow your child to draw with chalk on his or her wall. As your child begins to draw or paint, taking their art and putting it in inexpensive frames allows you to change out their art as they get older.

What we did right was something different and honest. Blueshift founder on wireless speaker design

    - April 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Wireless technology is one of the most significant contributors towards widespread adoption of smart home technology, lowering the barriers and costs involved in connecting just a room or an entire home. Instead of paying for a custom install, devices can connect to each other and to home networks over WiFi, NFC or radio waves to name a few options. That means no drilling, no wiring and little technological know-how required for a homeowner to establish a smart solution.

Wireless speakers are among the most popular connected devices for the home, and theyre also some of the most beautiful. As the market matures, expected to reach $13.75 billion by 2018, companies like Philips, Sonos and Samsung are differentiating their products through design. But such differentiation tactics can be employed by startups as well.

Portland, Oregon-based BlueshiftPDX is one startup looking to pave a path to success by designing a better battery for wireless speakers. Its Helium speaker charges in only five minutes, thanks to its supercapacitor. This energy storage capability allows the speaker to charge quickly, and then play at full volume for six hours, Blueshift claims, lasting about 500,000 charge cycles.

Turning to crowdfunding, Blueshift has already exceeded its $35,000 campaign goal. Today we hear from Blueshift founder and head designer Sam Beck, who began by building bike speakers. Here Beck details the reasons his team chose CrowdSupply over Kickstarter, the importance of open source tools in startup communities, and his speaker design process.

    Why CrowdSupply over Kickstarter?

    Sam Beck, Blueshift founder

Theyre local, so I was able to meet with them in person, and I got a great deal of support from them. They helped with public relations and marketing more than what I wouldve been able to do on my own.

    .

For Blueshift, whats the role of open source?

Its been really helpful so far, probably five or six electrical engineers have looked at the project and offered feedback. I have a couple guys helping with final round for revisions before our speaker goes out to production. Its been amazing to see how willing people are to help out.

Police discover moonshine operation behind Sandy Springs home

    - April 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SANDY SPRINGS, Ga.

Sandy Springs police say what officers initially thought might be a meth lab behind a home, was in fact a moonshine operation.

Police told Channel 2s Mike Petchenik they were called to a home on Windsor Parkway this week after the property owner discovered the unusual setup.

There was a pressure cooker, copper wiring, said Sgt. Ron Momon.Upon further verification it was determined to be a moonshining operation.

Momon said police believe whomever was distilling the homemade cider was making about a gallon of it a week.

Its actually a felony in the state of Georgia, he said. At this point we dont have any evidence, any leads. Only thing we have is the cooking operation.

Neighbors told Petchenik that they were surprised to hear about the found firewater.

I think its fantastic, said Guy Tucker. The mountains have come down to the city and its great to blend the two.

Neighbor Jack Byrd said he was disappointed to hear police had destroyed the distillery.

No samples? he asked. The whole neighborhood could have gotten happy.

Puig out, Kemp in for Dodgers home opener

    - April 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By BETH HARRIS AP Sports Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Yasiel Puig was scratched from the starting lineup after arriving late for the Los Angeles Dodgers' home opener on Friday.

The rest of the team was already on the field stretching before batting practice while Puig was getting dressed in the clubhouse. He had been slated to start in right field for the afternoon game against the San Francisco Giants, who beat the Dodgers 8-4.

"I'm sincerely sorry," Puig said through a translator after the game, explaining that he didn't realize stretching and batting practice would be held so early with a 1 p.m. start.

Puig said he apologized to manager Don Mattingly and his teammates, and they accepted.

"They felt it was OK when I owned up to it and apologized," he said. "I felt bad I wasn't out there playing for all the fans."

Instead, Matt Kemp replaced Puig in the lineup after manager Don Mattingly had earlier said Kemp wouldn't start. Kemp came off the disabled list on Friday after rehabilitating from left ankle and shoulder operations. He was limited to 279 games during the last two seasons because of injuries.

Puig, last year's runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year, was 5 for 20 through his first five games of the season. He wasn't used as a pinch-hitter because Mattingly said the situation didn't call for it. The Dodgers trailed 8-0 after two innings.

    Mattingly downplayed Puig's mistake.

"He truly felt bad," the manager said. "You can tell by his body language; he doesn't hide things well."
