The Thomas P. ONeill, Jr. Federal Building has recently been awarded LEED Platinum Certification established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED is the nations preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
Designed by Boggs & Partners Architects, The ONeill Federal Building project is a modernization of an aged 550,300 square foot federal office building just a few blocks from the Capitol in Southwest D.C. The building accommodates nearly 2,000 federal employees with an improved work environment and reduces the use of natural resources. The project involved demolition, base building core and shell work, tenant interior fit-out, and site improvements. The 9-floor (7 above, 2 below grade) buildings key features include a large glass-encased entry atrium, a similar central atrium spanning from the basement to roof skylight, a communicating stair from the basement to sixth floor, a green roof and enhanced security features.
Turner could not be prouder that the Thomas P. ONeill, Jr. Federal Building has achieved LEED Platinum Certification, said Chris Jahrling, Vice President and General Manager of Turners Federal Services Group. It is extremely difficult to achieve this level of sustainability, and requires a great deal of effort from the contractor and architect to develop and implement innovative methods of sustainable design and construction, especially on a renovation project. We are thrilled to deliver this building to the GSA and even more excited that it will provide a healthy atmosphere for the workers that will occupy the facility.
The ONeill Federal Building achieved LEED Platinum by significantly reducing energy and water use, increasing natural light and ventilation water and by using materials with high recycled content. The intention of a LEED certified building is to save money for taxpayers, reduces the overall building maintenance costs for businesses and creating a healthier indoor work environment. A building that reduces its greenhouse gas emissions and the dependency on infrastructure can contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community.
With each new LEED-certified building, we get one step closer to USGBCs vision of a sustainable built environment within a generation, said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. As the newest member of the LEED family of green buildings, The Thomas P. ONeill, Jr. Federal Building is an important addition to the growing strength of the green building movement.
LEED certification of the ONeill Federal Building was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community. These features include:

News about the school districts investigation of outsourcing transportation services drew attention as soon as it became known through an RFP (Request for Proposals). The school boards meeting of March 27 was an opportunity for members of the community and representatives of approximately 50 in the transportation department to express concerns.
The first thing made clear by the administration was that no decisions have been made.
The dedication and service of our bus drivers are, without question, the utmost in professionalism, said Don Mooney, Executive Director of Operations. In our budget process, we need to prioritize all costs and look for opportunities to save. The financial consideration is a big part of this, but weve had no responses yet (from interested vendors), and it would be premature for the district to state any information.
Mooney referenced the challenges of the Act 1 environment under which districts function. With a cap set for spending increases, and costs rising in areas such as retirement funding and benefits, the district looks for various strategies of cutting expenditures without negatively impacting the core mission of education, Mooney said in a phone interview earlier in the day. Transportation run by management services is used almost exclusively in nearby Chester County school districts, but is absent so far in Delaware County.
The bus drivers commented on the business aspect, but emphasized the human story.
Everyone in this room cares about the children, said driver John Ballas who has been driving for four years after retirement from a business career. We know the streets, the families and the kids. Speaking for myself and maybe some others, Id give up the pension and sick days and take a pay cut, but no one asked us to do this.
He said drivers provide the kind of extra service that may have spoiled children and families, but are done out of the love of their jobs.
Howard Collier similarly has been a driver with the district for a short period. He took on the job three years ago after a 25-year career with SEPTA.
I love my job here. There is not a child I drive that I wouldnt adopt. We take the kids to school and bring them home safely, said Collier, who said he drives youngsters from 5 to 21 who are challenged in various ways. I will invite every board member to ride my bus, or any other bus, to see how we take care of our children.

As the seasonal residents leave town and head back up North for cooler temperatures, we locals welcome the crazy lazy days of summer that is until the thunder blasts, the lightning strikes and the unrelenting rains pour down. If the past 10 years are any indication of the escalating threat and frequency of the ubiquitous summer storms, I fear were in for another tumultuous summer.
In addition to the havoc extreme weather changes can, and do, play on our homes, the age of our houses, villas and condominiums also dictate the need for some extra tender loving care especially in our absence.
The following list of ideas and suggestions was compiled to help you manage the transition between two or more homes, as well as to safeguard your investment when youre not here.
Dont forget
When traveling between two or more homes, keep one garage door opener and one full set of keys (front door, mailbox, safety deposit box, etc.), per home, in a separate Ziploc bag for easy access.
Take photographs of the clothes you leave behind. This way, if youre up North and cant find your favorite black cocktail dress or tuxedo, you can refer to the photographs.
Every five years, prepare a detailed inventory of all personal property, which should also include photographs/videos. Make two copies; one for yourself and one to keep in your lawyers vault.
HVAC & humidity
If youre leaving town for an extended period of time, do NOT turn the air conditioner off or put it on a warmer setting. Set thermostat to 75 degrees.
Leave ceiling fans on at all times. Contrary to what youve heard, the fans will NOT blow up and burn your house down, but they will circulate the air more efficiently in your absence.
