Angered by removal of oak tree, group gathers at stump

Despite the wind and rain early Saturday, Terry Ann Gallagher went out to the stump of the 330-year-old Garry oak that was cut down last week to pay her respects.

Gallagher tacked to the stump a photograph of the tree she had taken years ago.

Theres a lot of history with that tree, Gallagher said. Ive been on the island for 16 years. This is first time in a long time I wanted to get out and be pissed at someone.

Gallagher said she posted the tree cutting on Facebook and the response of her friends was, What a disgraceful thing to do.

Under the direction of Mayor Scott Dudley, the city cut the Garry oak down early morning Sunday, March 23, without prior public notice.

A lengthy press release from the city was emailed about the felling at the time the cutting got underway.

The Oak Harbor City Council had known about the plan to cut the tree for months, but the subject was discussed in closed-door sessions because, they subsequently maintained, the city was under the threat of possible litigation.

While limbs falling onto the road below posed some safety concerns in the past, the city was not facing any impending lawsuits, according to city officials.

Neighbors fear tree removal may lead to loss of 'forest feel'

    - April 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

For years, La Caada has worn the mantle of "Tree City USA," a title bestowed by the national Arbor Day Foundation upon communities that support tree preservation, in part, by maintaining a comprehensive tree ordinance.

The city recently revised its tree ordinance after 12 years to simplify rules protecting certain species and to codify language on preservation, removal and maintenance. At the time, City Council had the opportunity to consider also protecting "heritage trees," or nonprotected species with a diameter of at least 36 inches, but declined.

Now, a month after the revision, some residents living on La Forest Drive are concerned with what they believe is an ordinance that's too permissive and is allowing a local developer to legally remove several 100-foot-tall pines on a neighboring lot.

"The whole thing is going to be clear cut, basically," said neighbor Lorrie Buchanan Alves. "If he wants to take out every piece of vegetation and raze this thing flat, he can."

Alves and neighbor Cameron Crosby, whose lots abut the property in question, have communicated with property owner Seung Choon "Mario" Lim through emails and two neighborhood meetings held by Lim in September and October to discuss renovation plans.

In the first meeting, Lim informed neighbors he wished to expand the 1956 home and remove some of the 23 trees on the overgrown lot.

Crosby said he supported the plan at the time but was angered when he discovered, in a second meeting one month later, Lim planned to remove 20 trees including several tall pines Crosby felt crucial to the character of the street.

"These trees are part of a canopy," Crosby said Tuesday. "This is just about the community's desire to maintain the forest feel we have."

Harriet Harris, an assistant planner who worked on the tree ordinance revision, said any tree that is non-native and therefore unprotected can be removed without a permit, regardless of its age or size.

When the ordinance was being presented for approval, she added, City Council was not in favor of protecting heritage trees.

'Parenthood' Star Burkholder Sheds Light On Autism

    - April 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW YORK (AP) Max Burkholder strives to be a normal teen while working on the NBC drama "Parenthood."

The 16-year-old actor attends school when he's not filming the show, which airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. EDT, about the ups and downs of a large family living in Berkley, Calif.

Burkholder's character, also named Max, isn't your typical teen. He has Asperger syndrome, a mild form of autism.

Burkholder says he was 10 or 11 years old when he got the part, and he didn't know about Asperger's.

"In the beginning ... I would meet with a doctor who specializes in working with children with Asperger's as well as the director of the next episode and we'd talk about what Max should be doing, how he'd react in certain situations, things like that," Burkholder said in an recent interview.

"Parenthood" is now in its fifth season. Burkholder says he feels more comfortable with the character and receives guidance less frequently.

"I sort of feel that I've figured out how Max specifically acts rather than how a person with Asperger's would generally act."

Burkholder's character is extremely intelligent. He rarely looks others in the eye or displays emotion, unless it is frustration. He is blunt and matter of fact in his speaking, but his observations can be funny even cringe-worthy, because they are so honest and unrestrained.

Monica Potter, who plays his mother, says she marvels at working with Burkholder.

"Working with Max is one of the greatest things about coming to work. Wicked smart, extremely talented and beyond hilarious," she says. "Everyone should be so lucky to get to work with genius like him."

Brush fire burns 3 sheds in Marietta

Flames burned three sheds Wednesday afternoon, April 2, 2014, on Wynn Road northwest of Bellingham. The homeowner's brush fire got out of control and led to a 50-by-50-foot grass fire between the overgrown buildings. No one was hurt.

Three sheds burned when a brush fire got out of control Wednesday, April 2, in the Marietta area.

Firefighters were called at 1:36 p.m. for a fire behind a home at 4037 Wynn Road, northwest of Bellingham. Flames from a controlled burn had spread to blackberry thickets in the backyard.

The homeowner called 911 as the burn fanned to a 50-by-50-foot grass and blackberry bush fire that then burned an overgrown barn and two overgrown sheds, said Bellingham Assistant Fire Chief Bill Hewett.

"I've got to give him a little pat on the back," Hewett said, "because he immediately knew to call for help when he realized it was something his garden hose couldn't handle."

The first fire engine reached the scene in seven minutes. It took firefighters from Whatcom County Fire districts 7 and 8 about an hour to extinguish the flames and mop up.

The old, weather-beaten buildings had little to no monetary value. They were being used as storage sheds. No one had a damage estimate Wednesday.

It's legal to burn in rural Whatcom County, but large brush fires require a permit. For more details, visit the county fire marshal's office website: co.whatcom.wa.us/pds/build/fire.
